To think that scented sanitary products

Are unnecessary and cause infections?

I bought some panty liners from Aldi - one of the few places you could get unscented sanitary protection stuff from. Opened the box, they are bloody scented. No mention of this on the packaging.

I've complained to them privately via social media. Their first response was a polite, standard brush off. The second one asked me for the barcode so they could look into things. Today's response is that they're in the process of changing the package. Sorry.

What is it with the trend for sticking perfume in these things? It's completely unnecessary, can cause thrush and other infections.

Oh fuck. Dad’s back Sad

Morrison's own brand are fragrance free and also better that a lot of the more expensive ones that turn you into a roller skating parachutist.

Asda's own are unscented too. It's impossible to do the sniff test I the shop as the whole bloody (ba-boom-tish) aisle stinks.

I remind my daughter frequently to never, EVER use scented sanitary products or douches. Horrible for our bodies and totally unnecessary. I have also passed on the wisdom of my grandmother and mother to never (unless you need to wear a pad), wear underwear to bed. Our vaginas need to breathe! Neither my grandmother, mother, or myself have ever had any type of infection and I credit this fact to letting the girl get air. Grin

The smell literally makes me gag

This. I don't understand why always scent their products either.

I only use thin maternity pads now because of this - Boots do a great ultra-thin pad which is completely unscented and not plasticky. Even a lot of the unscented ones I find irritating because of the chemical gel in them. I sometimes buy Cottons but they got a bit irritating too, not sure why.

Thinking of making the move to cloth, or even Thinx as I don't have a particularly heavy flow. For me it's not just the risk of thrush, but my skin down there seems much more sensitive these days and gets sore easily when I'm on my period. I agree about the smell, too - I have never found that period blood smells bad unless you have an infection, or have left the pad on far too long; though I imagine it does smell horrible once mixed with chemical gels and artificial freshener scent.

I'm completely allergic. Went to Sainsbury's, and counted 25 different types of sanitary towel, all scented. I got to Boots now and buy Cottons

Helpotron3000 · 04/02/2018 01:25

Posted too soon... But Boots have changed something about Cotton's recently and I'm allergic to them too now!

I've ended up buying Natracare which cost a fortune. I think I'll move to the mooncup soon

I kept getting repeat bouts of thrush every month, I used 'always' and it never crossed my mind that it could be the god awful chemical fragrance they put in them. Anyway, I saw it somewhere else ?possibly on here) and bought some cheap Superdrug none fragranced ones and haven't had thrush since
Same!

itshappening · 04/02/2018 01:51

I had some scented ones and the smell was so horrible that I thought I must have an infection and was about to book a doctor's appointment, when I realised the unused pads had exactly the same horrible smell. I don't know what they are playing at!

youngnomore · 04/02/2018 02:15

I use the scented pantyliners on the last couple of days of my period when it’s very light. I absolutely love the smell. Especially the carefree one. I have very heavy periods.
So I feel very self conscious about the smell during my period. I’ve been like this since the day i started. I’m 40.

Mrstobe90 · 04/02/2018 02:17

'Always' pads are scented and make me really uncomfortable.
Bodyform are sooooo much better!

Goodenoughparent101 · 04/02/2018 04:24

YADNBU. I think men invented them.
They are awful.
