To think 6 year olds should not be wearing this

Merchandise from a major dance show at the excel centre in London next month. They sell these, and tshirts from age 6 up.

I’m going to have to explain to a 10 year old why she can’t have a jumper...

Confused Hmm

You have to really, really, be looking for offence to see anything rude in that, for crying out loud.
I hope this is a wind up and just some saddo hoping for their five minutes of fame in the Daily Fail, as if not this place is getting even more ridiculous!!

welliments · 01/02/2018 19:53

I had a Frankie says Relax t-shirt...maybe that's what's scarred me...

Waits for chorus of 'but he only wanted everyone to chill out!'

I'm with you OP.

When I was at uni, it was a bit of a thing for society hoodies to have similar.

The couple I remember are "geographers do it in the field" and "debaters do it across the table", but there were definitely more.

So I'd definitely be put out to see it on a pre-teen!

CandyYumYum · 01/02/2018 19:55

welliments I feel like the most innocent soul in the world but i only learnt recently that 'Relax' was about anal sex.

CurlsandCurves · 01/02/2018 19:56

Rugby players do it with odd shaped balls....

welliments · 01/02/2018 19:56

Why are people so meaningful the internet?

Yes dreamy I'm a real person. With feelings and everything.

I'm sorry you think I'm a saddo for having different views to you. Personally I think I'm a pretty nice person with a concern about a jumper...

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 19:56

Clearly the 'it' can be taken mean sex.

Oh, good God,is that what people are seeing?! Honestly, seeing "dancers do it with attitude" and immediately jumping to "it must mean sex" instead of dancing when it's on a dance hoodie says an awful lot more about your gutter mind than anything else!
I swear people just look for things to be offended about lately.

CandyYumYum · 01/02/2018 19:57

'gutter' is a such a popular word tonight.

welliments · 01/02/2018 19:59

I love it when someone gets violently offended at the OP being offended.

And then says how ridiculous it is that everyone is so offended nowadays...

bridgetreilly · 01/02/2018 19:59

I agree with the OP. I've seen so many slogans of that kind (mostly worn by students) where the 'it' is obviously sex. I don't think that means seeing sex everywhere, I think it's what you're supposed to read in that slogan and so I wouldn't let kids wear it either.

NataliaOsipova · 01/02/2018 19:59

I did not know that.....Blush

Sorry then if you are, but I was just saying I hoped it was a wind up as the alternative seemed a bit too laughable.
Seriously, "it" doesn't automatically mean "shag."
Why on earth would you be worrying about the message it sends out or what you should be telling 6 year olds? You just tell them, if they ask "what does it mean" that it means dancing. Dancers are dancing with attitude.
No drama.

welliments · 01/02/2018 20:01

Relax don't do it
When you wanna go to it
Relax don't do it
When you wanna come

Confused Not offended in the slightest, not sure why you think I am, violently or otherwise.
It is ridiculous how hard people look to read into things about.

Ishouldntbesolucky · 01/02/2018 20:03

I'm with you op.

I've seen plenty of that type of top which are clearly about sex - showjumpers do it with whips etc.

I suppose this ballet one is fairly mild, but no-one who has heard all the other similar types of slogans could fail to mistake it for what it is. I suppose if you've never heard this type of double entendre before, perhaps it isn't immediately apparent (as evidenced by lots of pps!)

RobotGoat · 01/02/2018 20:03

I'm baffled by the fact that some people are thinking OP is just looking for something to be offended by. I had just turned 4 in 1990 so funny remember the 80s at all, but I'm well aware of the 'X do it with Y' double-entendre joke. I can't believe there are so many people who haven't heard of it!

NataliaOsipova · 01/02/2018 20:04

Honestly, seeing "dancers do it with attitude" and immediately jumping to "it must mean sex"

No - you see "dancers do it with attitude" and think "that doesn't make sense". Then "In what context would that make sense?". Then "Oh, if "do it" has a meaning which we should understand in its own right." Then "Oh yes, it was a very 1980s term for shagging."

MonumentalAlabaster · 01/02/2018 20:07

The point about a double entendre is that the innocent don't see the second meaning.

"To the pure, all is pure" as my grandmother used to say.

So in that sense it is harmless to children.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 01/02/2018 20:09

I feel like I’m in an alternate universe - how can so many of you not be familiar with the do it ???

I wouldn’t like it. It seems a bit provocative for a younger child.

MissWilmottsGhost · 01/02/2018 20:09

YANBU OP It's definitely based on an old sex joke. I suspect some MNetters are too young to remember the trend for them, it was late 80s early 90s I think.

I used to have a badge on my labcoat saying "Microbiologists do it with culture and sensitivity" Grin

Do people not think before putting shit like this on children's clothes? Its like the craze for girls stuff plastered with the Playboy bunny logo FFS Confused

MonumentalAlabaster · 01/02/2018 20:09

So I suppose any objection would be about the exploitation of putting a 6-year-old in a garment with a slogan that will make adults laugh whilst she herself does not understand the joke.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 01/02/2018 20:10

Nah, wouldn't put my child in that. It may be a joke many on here don't get, but I get it alright. It is absolutely a sexual innuendo.

masktaster · 01/02/2018 20:11

Then "Oh, if "do it" has a meaning which we should understand in its own right." Then "Oh yes, it was a very 1980s term for shagging."

There is a Melvin Burgess book aimed at teens/yas about teens having sex called Doing It.

It was published in 2004. I read it a couple of years after that. I'm sure other people did then, too. I think other books I read at a similar time spoke of "doing it", though I don't know what other teens were saying about sex then, as my friends were as bookish and without sex as me.

MonumentalAlabaster · 01/02/2018 20:12

MissWilmottsGhost my microbiologist Dad had a good one on his lab coat:
"It may be shit to you but it's my bread and butter"

Gabilan · 01/02/2018 20:12

Rugby players do it with balls
Windsurfers do it standing up

Horse riders do it sitting astride. Yes, it does refer to sex. Yes it's a very old joke, such as it is.
