To ban phones and other technology from my coffee shop?

I actually don't HAVE a coffee shop or any other business but I just wondered - hypothetically speaking, if it was a great place, with fabulous coffee and cakes etc. would you still go if NO technology at all was allowed to be used in there?

@specialsubject what's wrong with phone gazing if you're there by yourself?

NotCornflakes · 01/02/2018 17:51

No I wouldn't. I'm in a coffee shop just now and the only reason I am here is because of the free WiFi.

mumeeee · 01/02/2018 17:54

No. I am sometimes in a coffee shop while I'm waiting for someone and it's important that I'm contactable

paxillin · 01/02/2018 17:56

Nope. I have enough people handing out random rules to follow.

scaryteacher · 01/02/2018 17:59

I might if I had a book with me, but I tend to read on my Kindle as it lives in my bag when I'm out and about.

Different strokes though - my Mum would use it because no techie gadgets were allowed.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 01/02/2018 18:00

No. I can't remember the last time that I didn't need to be contactable by someone if necessary.

dangermouseisace · 01/02/2018 18:01

No.

Schools expect parents to be surgically attached to their phone these days.

Also my knitting patterns etc are downloaded to my phone! So technology can be being used for non tech purposes.

iveburntthetoast · 01/02/2018 18:02

BIg fat no

lanbro · 01/02/2018 18:03

I do own a coffee shop and no, I would never ban devices. I offer free Wi-Fi and people come in knowing they can still work if necessary. I use social media for advertising so would be slightly hypocritical!

Amummyatlast · 01/02/2018 18:03

No. The only time I'm in a coffee shop is on my own (usually travelling for work purposes) so I want to read my kindle in peace.

DenPerry · 01/02/2018 18:04

No! I love reading my phone in peace in a coffee shop. Cafes attract a lot of customers who are on their own. If you want to encourage groups of people to not use their phones you could put a little box in the middle of the table encouraging them to place their phones in it.

No. I read books etc on my phone and do life planning/job searches. It also helps to stop the creeps sitting next to me

pasturesgreen · 01/02/2018 18:06

No fucking way.

SadieHH · 01/02/2018 18:08

Signs like that are so wanky, and yet they think they’re being so clever. I’ll decide if I want to talk to people, thanks.

DakotaWest · 01/02/2018 18:09

Absolutely not for all the reasons above.

All my books are on my Kindle anyway.

Littlepond · 01/02/2018 18:10

Nope! I assume if tech is banned you'll be doing all the transactions with pen and paper? Grin

I love my phone and my iPad. I'll go somewhere they are welcome!

Rubyroop · 01/02/2018 18:10

Nope but then you're asking a bunch of people browsing an online forum on their phones/tablets/computers so maybe not a representative sample

DakotaWest · 01/02/2018 18:10

I would however love a "no phone conversation" train carriage - browse as much as you want, but I could do without the loud inane conversations we have to endure morning and evening.

I dread the day when phones will be allowed on plane, I really do.

spagbowl · 01/02/2018 18:11

Bit ironic that you ask this question on the internet.

iklboo · 01/02/2018 18:11

No. If I'm with DH or DS I talk to them. If it's on the rare occasion I get an hour to myself I like to read my kindle or phone (not take a call, I'd go outside for that). I wouldn't want to chat to random strangers, sorry.

DakotaWest · 01/02/2018 18:11

Good point Rubyroop Grin

I don't even have a watch, I need my phone to check the time!

Aeroflotgirl · 01/02/2018 18:12

Nope. Some go to coffee shops, to sit quietly and gave a coffee, whilst browsing tech, or doing work on their laptop. A parent might need tech, to calm a young child down or with SN, whilst thry have a coffee.

Pearlsaringer · 01/02/2018 18:12

Depends on whether you provided free magazines, books, jigsaws, cats etc.

AlwaysPondering · 01/02/2018 18:13

I would. I never use a coffee shop for wifi. But then I only ever go with friends and DC but I imagine it is important for some people.
