To think that MN needs to stop deleting threads “because of privacy concerns”?

When actually the reason most deletions are called for is because the OP isn’t getting the answer they want.

MN is a public platform. If you post here there is a chance that someone might read it and recognise themselves in your postings. But unless it’s genuinely a huge issue involving say, child abuse or legal issues which could prejudice a trial for instance the fact they’ve already recognised your post means they already know you’ve written about them and the privacy concerns are no longer an issue are they?

And all to often it happens that an OP posts a thread, gets a unanimous response that they’re not being reasonable, and voila, the thread gets deleted “because of privacy concerns.” Hmm can’t MN just post in the T&C that posting on a public internet forum automatically means you’re not posting in a private club, and that you’re aware of that prior to posting?

The constant removal of threads for alleged privacy reasons is ridiculous.

I agree and I also wonder how many of those OPs are 'repeat offenders'. I think some posters are just taking the mickey now - as you say - not liking the responses and wanting the thread removed.

Perhaps MNHQ could just take out the posts where the OP thinks she/he has outed themselves - and redact those details only. It might make posters think a bit more which wouldn't be a bad thing.

Albertschair · 01/02/2018 11:06

Why does it matter to you?

My advice is not so wonderful that people (including you) can't ignore it. And sometines people are so pushed to defend their position (perhaps especially when most disagree with them) they reveal details they shouldn't.

Don't get so invested that when a thread goes away it bothers you at all

(Except I hate it when I'm part way through an enjoyable obviously troll thread and it gets deleted before I get to the pay off page)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/02/2018 11:06

Also, thinking about it, just because MNHQ removes a thread doesn't mean that a gutter tabloid hasn't picked it up already. Bluedoglead reminded me of that yesterday and it's a very good point.

PoorYorick · 01/02/2018 11:07

On the one hand I completely agree, on the other I guess we don't own the threads.

It's infuriating though.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/02/2018 11:08

I'm glad that happens then Albertschair, if only to thwart thigh-rubbing posters like you who are part of the reason why we have all these attention-seeking trolls in the first place.

SilverySurfer · 01/02/2018 11:23

100% agree. It has become common these days to see threads where the responses are mostly YABU which upsets the OP, she flounces, MNHQ deletes thread citing (non-existent) real life info having been given in the OP.

Never used to happen.

ChaosNeverRains · 01/02/2018 11:40

Also, it’s not IMO being over-invested, the fact here remains that between threads being deleted for trolling/excessive troll hunting/privacy concerns it’s got to a point where more threads seem to be deleted than are left, meaning that the question is starting to arise as to whether it is in fact worth posting at all.

OP posts:
SleepFreeZone · 01/02/2018 11:44

For you to care means you must be totally over-infested in the threads in the first place. No doubt you’ve got your teeth into the OP and are enjoying ripping them apart a little more with every post.

I’m glad MHHQ isn't give you the satisfaction of continuing tbh.

purplelass · 01/02/2018 11:46

I wasn't a regular MN-er when I posted a thread about my boyfriend and some posters made nasty comments about him so when someone said it might end up in the Daily Mail it was a bit of a shock!

I've learned my lesson now and won't post anything which I wouldn't be bothered about if it went public, so I think people should be given one chance to have a thread deleted for privacy reasons.

Multiple deletions is taking the p tho

ChaosNeverRains · 01/02/2018 11:50

Pmsl sleepfree, like you’ve just done on this thread you mean? Oh, and it’s invested and mn hq

OP posts:
SleepFreeZone · 01/02/2018 11:51

So you are now attacking me for two typos? You are making yourself sound like a bit of a bitch OP.

mummymeister · 01/02/2018 11:54

MNHQ know who posters are. if someone changes user name then generally other details like their e mail address stays the same. I would imagine its a tiny minority who not only change user name but e mail address too. in which case, they hold the data so they can see if someone from the same e mail address is constantly asking for threads to be withdrawn. I have no idea who anyone is and couldn't say if someone is a repeat offender or not but HQ certainly can and they should be doing this.

ChaosNeverRains · 01/02/2018 12:04

I’d imagine that there may be repeat offenders or posters who simply don’t get the answer they’re looking for and as such ask for the thread to be removed. Judging by how quickly this sometimes happens I imagine that MN HQ probably don’t check the user details but take them at face value.

Ironically one I saw recently accused everyone (more or less the entire thread) who disagreed with her of trolling and requested mn hq put in a function for her to be able to filter them out, and then had the thread removed because she said she’d been identified and contacted in rl by the person she’d posted about.

People should be allowed have their threads deleted if they want, for whatever reason, why do you care so much?

ilovesooty · 01/02/2018 12:09

I find it a bit annoying partly because it seems to happen much more often than it ever used to and it feels that the goal posts have been moved on the issue.

k2p2k2tog · 01/02/2018 12:37

I've asked for a thread to be deleted for privacy concerns.

I started a thread about a new food / packed lunch restriction which had been implemented in my child's school. Lots of debate about whether it was reasonable or not. General consensus was it was reasonable, but poorly implemented/communicated. Fine. Off I went to bed.

Next day I had a PM from a journalist wanting to run the story and for me to name the school, be pictured and quoted. Even though I replied and said I was not interested in speaking to them and would not name the school under any circumstances I was still concerned that with a bit of advance searching and digging, the school could be identified. So I asked MN to pull the thread, which they did.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/02/2018 12:38

YANBU.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/02/2018 12:39

Ditto to those that get worked up about the Daily Mail lifting threads or the Wright Stuff. They need to get hold of a strong grip imho.

Shock at 'overinfested'. Grin

jurrasicPerk · 01/02/2018 12:55

I think it's hilarious that some people think that deleted from MN means deleted from the internet.

Canyouguess · 01/02/2018 12:58

I think it's hilarious that some people think that deleted from MN means deleted from the internet.

Um it does.
Once deleted off mumsnet, then you can’t find that thread again.
So how else would you find it on the internet unless it has appeared on the Mail?

jurrasicPerk · 01/02/2018 13:06

This explains it better than I could.

www.labnol.org/internet/recover-deleted-webpages-from-internet/6529/

If you can't be bothered to follow the link, think about when you get a message on google saying "page cannot be found, view cached page from xx/xx/xxxx instead" and what that's telling you.

Some content will disappear forever but most wont.

JJPP123 · 01/02/2018 13:10

Why does it matter? Maybe OP isn't enjoying the hammering. Why do you think they need to keep reading tonnes of Mumsnet posters telling them how wrong they are? It isn't your right to have your infinite wisdom listened to.

Canyouguess · 01/02/2018 13:12

Did you actually read that article?

In those cases where it is even possible, it’s extremely onerous and time-consuming according to that article.

SandyDenny · 01/02/2018 13:29

It's annoying when you've taken the time to post on someone's thread who is asking for views on a subject and then gets the thread deleted because they don't like the answers and have shown themsleves to be a of tit.

You don't need to be overinvested to be annoyed at that.

I enjoy reading here and joining in the discussion with so many deletions it becomes pointless, we're not bad people for to not want deletions for petty reasons.

If you get a hammering hide the thread and naem change
