To ask why you think the press is so obsessed with Malia Obama dating a white boy?

It just seems so meaningless to me. Yes she's the daughter of the former POTUS but outside of that she's surely just a teen dating a guy she finds hot.
Why all the 'think' pieces etc? And why all the drama about them?
Can't they just have some peace to shag like I did at uni and get to know each other?

Mind you didn't Chelsea Clition get a fair amount of press attention? I have to admit I'd no idea who Malia was dating so just had to Google.

Assuming for simplicity that "black" includes everyone who isn't "white", then, in fairness, the US has twice the proportion of "black" people compared to the UK. (Going by numbers listed as "white" in wikipedia, 74% USA versus 87% UK.)

I don't actually care about the statistics, I was just going to make the point that if you've never had a black PM, then the media might well make a big deal about it when you do, just like our media did when Obama became President. The OP asserted it isn't a big deal, but I bet you will find that it is when it happens.

The OP (me) actually campaigned for Obama. I simply don't want the attention at his children. In the same way that I wouldn't consider that Kathryn Blair has blood on her hands despite the fact that her dad needs to be tried in the Hague.

I didn't campaign for Obama or anyone because of The Hatch Act not that it matters, but I'd rather she be out of the spotlight too. That's just what happens with Presidents' children. As I said, the same happened to Chelsea Clinton and the Bush twins. This isn't unique to Malia Obama.

I thought your point was that the media is making a big deal about her dating a white guy. That's what your thread title is about.

The heading of your OP is about his race and the press being obsessed by Malia going out with a white man - which you haven't given any evidence of and no one else has seen anything on. The focus of your OP going by the heading seemed to be race.

Now you seem to be saying you don't think she should have any attention from the press. And you don't seem to be continuing with the race issue. So confusing. I've no idea what you're really saying.

I think she should be left alone but she probably won't be. Does it matter her boyfriend is white? No, why should it. Is anyone bothered by that? You mention the press is obsessed but don't link any articles proving this "obsession". What obsession?

I don't even think the press are obsessed with her, let alone she has a boyfriend of another race. I'm missing the point. You're not explaining it.

The whole point of my post was pointing out the meaningless behind their racial backgrounds. You seem to think you have caught me out somehow by changing logic. You don't seem to be able to comprehend logic or comprehension enough to change it. At least you admit you are missing the point.

It's not just colour. It's an apparently entrancing brew of posh white boy and privileged/successful black girl.

Exaxtly the same mix that makes the Megan Markle thing a media dribble fest.

It's cringeworthy and racist and snobby and tedious and all of those things.

Why is it shite? I don't see colour either.

Because I know someone will ask, I'm not white. I grew up in London and I think when I was in my 20s, not noticing colour as quite common. Sadly I think we have gone backwards in many ways (now in 40s) but I think there are people who don't notice colour.

I've not seen any reports about who anyone is dating but I think the way the US is going, it's easy to imagine it being commented on.

How on earth could anybody possibly forget Obama is black when we've just had eight years of commentary on the fact, and hordes of crazed so-called "birthers" trying to prove he's not American because of it and long ponderous broadsheet articles about how direct African heritage (as opposed to via slavery) helped his political ambitions and insinuations about his family connections to Islam, and small-town KKK-wannabe mayors people calling Michelle a monkey and god knows what other nonsense.
