How bad is getting the Mirena coil in

Cazz10 · 31/01/2018 17:21

Iv given birth 3 months ago and had my first period last week it was so bad I ended up in hospital for two days they said the linning of my womb is so thick. I'm now on tranexamic acid to calm it down and postin..it has lightened down and hopefully it'll soon be over but now I'm being advised to get a Mirena coil in because of heavy periods but iv heard its really sore and the clamping feeling is bad just wondering has anyone had it done and how bad is it just so I can be prepared.. My doctor reckons mine should be no problem as iv had six children and my cervix is easy to find

Ahh, yes missed that bit.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 31/01/2018 18:44

I think it’s the skill of the doctor to be honest and nothing to do with shape or size of anything

I went to a specific women’s hospital and it was fine. Obviousiy undignified but not painful.

Worked fantastically with peri menopausal flooding.

As for weight I lost loads as felt fit enough to excerside and swim

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 31/01/2018 18:45

I’m on my 3rd coil, it’s uncomfortable but not much worse than period cramping (in my experience).

Singlebutmarried · 31/01/2018 18:45

I had mine as I can’t do oral contraceptives, first one hurt, but I’d not had Dd then. Second one. Fine.

Third one, would have been fine but the nurse clamped my labia in the speculum and carried on twisting even tho I was screaming.

It was her first time fittIng a coil.

Cakedoesntjudge · 31/01/2018 18:48

I second what others say about not having it done at your GP surgery - I had mine done at the family planning clinic and the nurse was saying how she does shedloads all the time. Much more reassuring than someone who only does it once in a while.

As most PPs have said, actual insertion is more discomfort than pain (although I felt a very quick sharp pain but it was literally a second). I did have awful cramping for 2 days afterwards and bled heavily for about 6 weeks on and off (more on then off though!), I also got cystic acne but just as I thought I'd made a mistake, my periods died down and are now non existent and my skin is back to normal a year on. I don't regret it at all and will happily have another one after this. Hands down the best contraception I've ever used!

MrsDilber · 31/01/2018 18:50

It was fine going in and it was fine it being taken out.

museumum · 31/01/2018 18:50

Mine was about as uncomfortable as a smear going in then as crampycas a bad period for a day or two.
Then fine Grin

Thequeenisdeadboys · 31/01/2018 18:54

No probs at all. You've reminded me that mine needs changing now.

TJ2503 · 31/01/2018 19:00

I had my mirena cool fitted about 4 months ago after DC2.

Actual insertion was fine and did not feel a thing but had some pretty gnarly cramps for the rest of the day afterwards ( decent paracetamol and coedine worked a treat). Had about 5/6 weeks of weird brown discharge (sorry if TMI) but that settled and now I don't really have periods, just a day or so of really light spotting.

Best method of BC I have used

RatRolyPoly · 31/01/2018 19:00

Recently had one (copper as I have barely-there periods) and was surprised when she said it was done. It wasn't fun by any stretch, but nothing like the colposcopy I'd had previously, and even that wasn't all that bad.

LonelyOversharer · 31/01/2018 19:05

Like a pp after my body had adjusted (about 6m) I felt so well I could exercise and have lost 3 stone (baby weight, I wasn't huge), no spots here either, but I now get incredibly tender breasts instead of a periods.

The mirena is such a fab thing for me, but I agree who inserts it matters! Mine was done by a gp, but she's the gyne lady, and does about 20 twice a week. Quick nip, a few cramps and a bit to settle down.

WickedGoodDoge · 31/01/2018 19:08

Going in has always been fine, but my next to last one went swimming up me and when it was time to take it out, there was no sign of it. Shock I had to be referred to a clinic where a very nice doctor spent 15 minutes fishing about me with a pair of tweezers until she found it and yanked it out. Wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences. Grin

Sassypants82 · 31/01/2018 19:13

I've had a Copper IUD (paraguard) fitted twice. Once before I had any children and once after my first child. It's was absolutely fine both times.

The initial part where they measure your cervix & prepare it for inserting the coil is more or less like a smear & then they pop it in & it's all done.

I had both mine out only to TTC & intend to get another as soon as I'm finished having babies. Highly recommend.

Thishatisnotmine · 31/01/2018 19:14

Before children: awful. Really unexpectedly bad, I don't know how I got through it. After children: a bit uncomfortable. I asked when the coil was going to be inserted and the dr replied "just done it. Now going to trim the threads".

Only a day of cramping and light bleeding for a few days after.

April241 · 31/01/2018 19:18

I had mine 12 weeks after having twins and didnt feel a thing (although I suppose everything was rather...enlarged Grin) its not due out for another few years which I am dreading a bit but im having a new one inserted then.

After the initial spotting for a few months its all settled, havent had a period in about 11 months, no monthly breakouts/mood swings/awful cramps.

Best BC ive tried including the implant and pill.

peachgreen · 31/01/2018 19:21

Crikey. My copper coil insertion and the subsequent cramps were the worst pain I've ever felt, and I've had major surgery three times for two conditions that cause chronic pain. Had it taken out after 8 months of unbearable (rolling around on the floor sweating and puking, leaking through super plus tampons and pads within an hour) periods.

Quite terrified about labour now, given how easy everyone else seems to have found coil insertion! Confused

JaneEyre70 · 31/01/2018 19:21

Doddle going in, slightly more uncomfortable coming out. I noticed cramps for a few days after but nothing that I needed painkillers or anything for. Do wear a pad straight after fitting though, as you can get a slight gush of blood from your cervix. I've had 4 fitted and am very happy with them ..... changed my life.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 31/01/2018 19:23

I have mine put in as an outpatient because I have a cervical block to stop me feeling anything after the go tried to put ot in in her surgery and I just couldn't tolerate the pain

MsHomeSlice · 31/01/2018 19:23

how bad can it be?

you have your pants off and area out on show to strangers, and a crispy bit of NHS tissue working its way into your bumcrack
and the fear that someone will open the door and reveal your all to the corridor

It really isn't painful if the person is good at it...so go see someone who does it a lot.

Shen0102 · 31/01/2018 19:27

getting it fitted is no problem...getting it taken out should be your worry. one of my friends had to get it taken out via surgery as hers moved around (possibly die to too much sex)

Shen0102 · 31/01/2018 19:27

due to*

AriadneThread · 31/01/2018 19:32

Haven't read other replies so apologies if it's repeating. I've had two, first one hurt a lot going in and coming out and had cramps after, second was fine going in and coming out and no cramps. I hadn't had kids at the time, if you've had some vaginal deliveries out of your 6 I think you'll be fine. It is totally worth it in my experience. I didn't have periods on the coil, bliss! Intend to go back on it some when. If you're of an anxious bent you can check the strings yourself to make sure it's still there but it's very reliable.

dementedpixie · 31/01/2018 19:35

I had to get mine removed under general anaesthetic as it went awol and nobody could get it out (a few folk tried!). Don't need anything now as dh has had the snip. I'm glad in some ways but going back to having periods isn't that great

nong45 · 31/01/2018 20:03

For heavy periods (I have fibroids) Mirena is just the best thing ever, the slight discomfort on fitting is so worth it and has given me back some quality of life. If you've only just given birth a Mirena fitting should be a doddle.

LMC84 · 31/01/2018 20:05

I had a copper coil
N getting put in n taken out was non painful
