To think you don't store toys like this

Why on earth would you use an old liquitabs box to store toys for a young child? Came across this recently and just thought it was bizzare. Why would you want to teach a child that those boxes which contain such toxic stuff might contain toys, surely it encourages them to pick up the real thing. So AIBU and precious, or do lots of people do this?!

Where has anyone even implied that it's stupid or bad parenting to reuse the box?

well that was actually the point of the thread

2 posts out of 75 and pretty low key posts too. I'm just a bit confused by the latest angry and accusatory posts.

Op has asked AIBU?
Most people have said yes.
A few said I don't think you are really but without any accusations towards anyone or preening about their own parenting.
A tiny minority have pondered on the validity of even having tabs.
And from all this some posters have taken the impression that there is virtue signalling and panic and and hysteria and accusations of poor parenting? Bit odd really.

AuntLydia · 31/01/2018 10:06

OK, well I think I'll leave this here because I don't think at this point I can post anything further without it being bizarrely misinterpreted. Wasn't trying to be passive aggressive just genuinely surprised at the turn a fairly innocent thread took.

diddl · 31/01/2018 10:06

"Liquidtabs are not ticking timebombs leeching poison onto children's toys."

Are you sure??Grin

Lweji · 31/01/2018 10:07

I wouldn't store food in them and I wouldn't encourage my child to eat their toys, so I don't think it should be a problem.

Just as long as the real stuff is safely put away from children.

Only if you haven't been on MN for long. Any thread can turn nasty. Grin

Abra1de · 31/01/2018 10:17

I always used these for small toys and art bits. Wouldn’t have occurred to my children to do anything daft as a result.

Chewbecca · 31/01/2018 10:27

Just had a lovely flashback to cigar tins with precious bits in at my Nan & Grandad's.

Reusing the tubs wouldn't bother me.

Ahhh the tobacco tins! We used to have them in Infants' School, one each, for our crayons. Golden Virginia, mine was.

And yes, YAB a bit U - but I would make sure I removed or covered the labels to distinguish them from the originals containing the liquitabs.

MovinOn · 31/01/2018 11:03

Personally I wouldnt do it. I always taught my dc not to do/touch something if it was dangerous. Even if the "danger" isnt present at that time I would still rather they didnt touch it. (if you understand any of that lol)

one time springs to mind we were at mil house. They had a coal fired range cooker in the kitchen, it would get so hot so told dc not to touch.
Ds started cruising, mil was watching him and I walked in to see him starting to pull himself up on it. I pulled him away and said NO, HOT. MIL looked at me, rolled her eyes and said "its not even on" My problem was, my ds wouldn't know if it was on or not until he touched it and burnt himself.

user187656748 I'm sorry for any offence, I didn't mean it to come across like I was accusing people of being bad parents at all. It's just I had a bad gut reaction when my parents did this with my toddler, who is just in that curious phase of life! I did genuinely want to see if I was being a bit PFB about the whole thing (it wouldn't be the first time) and really worded my OP quite badly in a judgey way. Perfectly happy to admit IABU!

You didn't cause me offence at all OP. I don't buy liquitabs anyway (and wouldn't do out of principle if they came in a plastic box).

But I would reuse said plastic box if it was otherwise going to be thrown away.

Jafinar · 31/01/2018 18:26

I think YANBU but then I probably have a PFB too. I certainly wouldn't do it.

Tootsiemcgraw · 01/02/2018 17:46

My friend’s son spent 3 weeks in intensive care after puncturing one of these with his teeth. His heart stopped 4 times & had to be brought back with defibrillators. He thought the box contained sweets as it looked so pretty - he’d used a kitchen chair to reach them 😢😢😢

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 01/02/2018 17:49

You are being a bit over bearing.
I’ve used them before but I have taken all the wrapping off and covered in sharpie just because I’m a bit pompous like that

Booboo66 · 01/02/2018 18:38

I actually can’t believe I’ve not thought to do this. They’d be handy for a few things. Both DD know not to eat liquitabs. Reminds me of the reverse when I was small and I’d excitedly open a biscuit tin to find buttons or sewing stuff. Funnily enough I didn’t dive in and swallow handfuls of buttons or chew needles because it claimed there was some chocolate chip cookies inside. Wink

DagenhamRoundhouse · 01/02/2018 19:06

You watch any film from the 40s, 50s and 60s and you'll see kids playing in the streets in filthy puddles, climbing onto moving cars (a novelty then) and mucking about by a canal (Taste of Honey). Streets these days are virtually empty of kids. I bet they all grew up OK.

Housewife2010 · 01/02/2018 19:27

If you buy the Aldi ones they'll never be able to open them anyway ( I can't!)

mummyhat · 01/02/2018 19:30

Really good for keeping Nerf bullets inWink

PirateMother · 01/02/2018 19:55

We’re you at my house? I’ve got Lego in a liquitabs box on the dining table.
