Going out to eat and ordering...

Just a dessert? I have been invited to a friends birthday meal and I have just looked at the menu and there really isn't anything I could eat without buying a 3 course meal, which no one ever does whenever we go out (everyone just gets a main.) It really isn't my kind of food and it's to late to cancel as it's been booked. Aibu? Would it look rude?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean (too little sleep!) but could you order a couple of starters instead of a main?

Iv done that when there's been nothing on the mains list I could eat.

EastMidsMummy · 30/01/2018 23:48

Just have a dessert, as long as you're 12 years old and choosing a meal on your own for the first time.

Otherwise, be an adult and pick something off the menu.

ThisLittleKitty · 30/01/2018 23:50

Even the starters I couldn't eat. Would just cancel but the tables booked.

What do you mean there's nothing you can eat? Do you have horrific allergies? In which case I'm sure the venue can cater for you. Or are you just stupidly fussy?

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 30/01/2018 23:51

which no one ever does whenever we go out (everyone just gets a main.)

And of course they always just order a dessert? Confused

Don’t be silly, just order the 3 course meal. That’s far more normal than just ordering dessert. Or do you just want cheesecake for dinner? Grin

Ummmmgogo · 30/01/2018 23:52

that's fine just tell the waiter to bring it at the same time as the mains.

stopbeingadramallama · 30/01/2018 23:52

If you could order a 3 course meal, surely there's something you can eat?

Or am I just being stupid?

ThisLittleKitty · 30/01/2018 23:52

I would but it is some italian/steak restaurant and I don't eat meat apart from chicken which isn't on the al la carte menu it's only on the set menu.

Dazedandconfuzzled · 30/01/2018 23:53

I don't understand. Why can't you eat anything but dessert?

EastMidsMummy · 30/01/2018 23:53

What is on the menu?

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 30/01/2018 23:53

1st world problems Grin

stopbeingadramallama · 30/01/2018 23:54

Did you know you was going to this restaurant before it was booked/ she asked you if you wanted to go out?

If so, surely the normal thing would be to look at the menu before saying yes?

ThisLittleKitty · 30/01/2018 23:54

I wouldn't want to be the only one ordering a 3 course meal. Everyone only ever gets a main.

Order what you like! I've ordered dessert for my lunch before with work colleagues. They all said they were gutted they'd never thought of it before. It was lovely. If you're going out with people who would frown on it maybe not but why go out with people you're not comfortable with? Enjoy your pud!

BackforGood · 30/01/2018 23:55

I don't understand what this means

I have just looked at the menu and there really isn't anything I could eat without buying a 3 course meal

er..... I read that as you could eat things from the starter, main and desert bits of the menu then ? I am Confused

ThisLittleKitty · 30/01/2018 23:55

No the first restaurant she booked allowed the booking but when she called to change the time it turned out the restaurant had closed so she booked another one (this was after already agreeing) maybe I will just order chips Confused

windchimesabotage · 30/01/2018 23:56

yeah just order a dessert to come at the same time as everyones mains. I think thats better than cancelling coz at least youve made an effort to be at a friends birthday. Im vegetarian and often have to do things like that at birthdays. Its the fact that you are there to celebrate their birthday at the place they want to eat at thats important not what you choose to eat. Im sure no one will think it rude as long as you dont make a big deal out of it.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 30/01/2018 23:56

Who cares what everyone else gets. Order what you want to eat. If you want ask for the starter to come with the mains so no-one is waiting for you before they can eat their mains.

fourandnomore · 30/01/2018 23:56

I understand now - just ask them to make the main from the set menu forbuou and they'll charge you accordingly. I think you're worrying about nothing here, have fun.

BackforGood · 30/01/2018 23:56

OK x-posted.
You mean you like things, but don't want to be the only one ordering a 3 course "set meal" ?

Leeds2 · 30/01/2018 23:56

Have you paid anything towards the meal? If not, just ask your friend to change the booking from, say, ten people to nine. Altering the booking isn't difficult, if that is what you mean.
Otherwise could you not, say, order steak/chicken etc without the sauce, so that it comes plain? Or phone them up beforehand and ask if they could do you an off menu green salad? What sort of menu is it, as in could it be easily modified?

WonderLime · 30/01/2018 23:56

Are you saying there isn’t a veggie option on the menu that you could eat instead?

Or you could just ask for x ‘but can you make that with chicken please?’

Or just order the 3-course meal.

MulhuddartDrive · 30/01/2018 23:57

If there's a main you'll eat on the set menu, they will more than likely do it for you as a single course. If you call them in advance they'll be able to tell you.

Somerford · 30/01/2018 23:57

It will look bizarre if everyone's main course arrives and you are sitting there eating fudge cake. Sorry but it will, and you will almost certainly feel daft. The restaurant will cater for vegetarians, ring them up and confirm.

GoingforitNowIthink · 30/01/2018 23:58

I don't understand why you don't just get the set menu?
