Going out to eat and ordering...

Just a dessert? I have been invited to a friends birthday meal and I have just looked at the menu and there really isn't anything I could eat without buying a 3 course meal, which no one ever does whenever we go out (everyone just gets a main.) It really isn't my kind of food and it's to late to cancel as it's been booked. Aibu? Would it look rude?

The restaurant will let you order just the main course from the set menu.

It’s no skin off their nose. I’ve done it lots of times.

Ask them to cook you the dish from the set menu but tell them you'll pay a bit more

eg) set meal is £30 for 3 courses... ask them to cook the chicken dish and you pay.. . £15-18 maybe?

Ok I think I get it now.

I would call ahead and just ask if there is a vegetarian option or if you could substitute chicken for beef/lamb etc or if you could order as a single main.

Most restaurants are flexible. If you want a main from the set menu they’ll probably oblige
