To think Sainsburys are stereotyping?

I went to look for some running clothes today on Sainsburys' website for my daughter - in the boys' drop down menu it has 'sports and active' - the girls' equivalent is 'ballet and dance'. Sainsburys response is that they've monitored customer feedback and find this best helps the customer find what they want.

AIBU to think this is so stereotypical and sexist? They do sell some clothing suitable for running but even then a lot of it is described as dance attire even though it's suitable for a lot more than just dancing in.

Surely they can’t please every single person and worry about every single opinion. I have a boy why do I want to spend half hour looking through tutus to get him a pair of running shorts. Just go to search and type in girls running trousers or something similar.

Jon66 · 30/01/2018 20:23

Yes it is sexist and ridiculous in the 21st century.

rachrach2 · 30/01/2018 20:25

Just a sports and active section under girls would suffice I'd have thought! I imagine tutus don't appear on the boys sports and active section so you wouldn't need to trawl through them.

Yes it is sexist, I hate this kind of thing as it seems little and if you complain about it people think you are overreacting. But the 'little' things like this add up.

CountFosco · 30/01/2018 20:28

I have a boy why do I want to spend half hour looking through tutus to get him a pair of running shorts.

I have girls, why should I have to spend half an hour looking through tutus to get them a pair of running shorts?

Your statement shows exactly why it's sexist.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 30/01/2018 20:32

What CountFosco said-that, exactly.

rachrach2 · 30/01/2018 20:33

I don't generally get too wound up about gender stereotyping - my girls do like ballet, dresses and pink stuff but they also like running through mud, climbing and often wearing boy hand me downs. This just seems so blatant to me.

If you don't like it, don't shop there. Shop somewhere with equal tutu opportunities.

EggsonHeads · 30/01/2018 20:36

Are the clothes under ballet and dance actually for dance?

BitOutOfPractice · 30/01/2018 20:36

It's so eye-rollingly annoying isn't it?

It may only be a little thing in and of itself, but this sort of pernicious stuff chips away and girls' ideas of themselves

Ghanagirl · 30/01/2018 20:37

Okay Creasey31
I’m guessing you don’t have girls, speaking as Mum of Girl/Boy twins I find it stupid as they both need running shorts etc...

rachrach2 · 30/01/2018 20:38

Clothes under ballet and dance contain clothing suitable for dancing and other activities. They have some great leggings suitable for running.

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 30/01/2018 20:39

Creasey31 you don't have to, just filter your results. Easy.

I too am guessing you don't have girls

DryHeave · 30/01/2018 20:39

Also seems that girls go to parties but boys attend occasions.

StinkPickle · 30/01/2018 20:40

Yep @Creasey31 I agree with countfosco

My daughter runs parkrun with me every week. She doesn’t do ballet or dance.

My 5 year old son does tap dancing and loves it. The point is “sports and active” should cover both sexes.

rachrach2 · 30/01/2018 20:41

I noticed that as well DryHeave!

youngnomore · 30/01/2018 20:42

Is this really that much of an issue. 🙄 just go to the boys section and pick out whatever you want. Who cares. Sainsbury’s said they’re responding to the feedback they had.

Longdistance · 30/01/2018 20:43

Tell Sainsbury’s to have a word with themselves.

RicottaPancakes · 30/01/2018 20:43

And "ballet and dance" should cover both sexes...nothing wrong with ballet and dance

rachrach2 · 30/01/2018 20:44

Youngnomore - exactly what I did, went to boys section. That didn't include the sort of leggings I was looking for, I found them eventually under girls 'ballet and dance' section. What's wrong with calling it 'sports and active' for girls too? They don't just dance!

OP posts:
LML83 · 30/01/2018 20:48

Sports and Dance or Active and Dance would describe the fact that there is both dancewear and active wear in the section.

I would find it eventually but find it hard to believe this is most sensible heading for it. I find it very hard to believe this has been shown to be best way by customers.

rachrach2 · 30/01/2018 20:50

Whoever monitors their Facebook page probably has some stock replies for things like this. I pm'ed them before I posted this.

OP posts:
youngnomore · 30/01/2018 20:54

Right. So you found what you needed but under dance and ballet rather then sports? I still don’t see the problem. I go on lots of sights and they have all sorts of categories I have to go through till I find what I need. (La Redoute for example ) Next time I know where to look.

MaryWortleyMontagu · 30/01/2018 20:54

Why do they even need two separate sections for girls and boys? Children's bodies do not differ from each other until puberty. I'm fed up of having to check two different sections when I want to buy a top or trousers for example. John Lewis is the way to go! Just let clothes be clothes.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 30/01/2018 20:54

OP, girls don’t do exercise or out door stuff, didn’t you know?

‘Tis very annoying. Shops tend to do a better range of sun suits for boys and girls have a lovely range of bikinis. They have a better range of wellies, full body coats etc. Bloody annoying as although I don’t care if I buy from the boys or girls section my DD is now at an age where she picks out her clothes and does tend to pick out pink clothing
