To think you don't take your child into toddler group if they've just been sick in the car

Lining up to pay our entrance fees and a mum with toddler and preschooler come in. Toddler is covered in sick. Mum announces 'she's been sick in the car getting here, just going to clean her up' and ushers kids to the loos. Reappears (toddler in fresh clothes), they pay and join the group. Toddler running around playing, apparently ok now although I overhear her mum telling friend she doesn't know why she was sick.

AIBU to think it's idiotic and selfish to take your child into playgroup when they've just vomited? If it's a bug you risk infecting all the other toddlers and babies Angry

Would you have said something to the mum?

I'd automatically assumed travel sickness tbh.

BaffledMummy · 30/01/2018 17:44

Urgh! I’d have taken my toddler and made a sharp exit. Not one for scenes but would have been upset about that.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 30/01/2018 17:45

I'd have left.

kaytee87 · 30/01/2018 17:48

I'd probably think ate too much before getting in the car / travel sickness.
I can see why you'd be upset if you had a child with a suppressed immune system but otherwise the majority of bugs kids pick up will be from children before they're even showing symptoms.

Anythingforacatslife · 30/01/2018 17:48

I would never be able to go anywhere. Even at the age of 10, dd still vomits if she’s in the car for longer than thirty minutes without medication. As a toddler it only took a few minutes.

Crunchymum · 30/01/2018 17:50

The mum didn't say it was car sickness though?

As an emetophobe, I'd have left immediately.

60sname · 30/01/2018 17:50

Toddler DS is frequently travel sick, and as yet has not had a vomiting bug. So I would certainly assume it was the car if he seemed ok in himself

kaytee87 · 30/01/2018 17:53

Child was running about happily afterwards so I wouldn't assume they were unwell at all.
I don't agree with people taking children they know to have a virus places but does everyone walk around in germ proof bubbles?

NotAgainYoda · 30/01/2018 17:53

Yeah, I'd assume travel sickness. She could have made it clear if so, though

Farmerswife36 · 30/01/2018 17:53

My dd suffers awful travel sickness so I'd have gave the mum the befit of the doubt and asked her if it was travel sickness. I would have definitely asked tho .

NotAgainYoda · 30/01/2018 17:54

Oh sorry, I see she didn't know it was definitely travel sickness. Must read more carefully Blush

whatpiffle · 30/01/2018 17:56

Same here anything

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork · 30/01/2018 18:00

I still remember the time some child chucked up on the side of the swimming pool while queuing up for the register at the start of the swimming lesson... Dad said "whoops" The instructor asked if he was going to do it again and dad said no because clearly he could see into the future and the kid got into the pool. Me and another parent went to get the pool manager who said it was up to the instructor to decide. We left.

But then this was in a swimming pool which is 20% urine and if a kid poos in it they fish out the solids with a net and chuck in some chemicals and let the kids back in the pool, if they ever took them out.

Toddler group is different though, far too much interaction and opportunity to pass on germs.

Tipsntoes · 30/01/2018 18:06

If the child was otherwise well I'd have assumed travel sickness too.

PistFump · 30/01/2018 18:09

YANBU. I hope 20 other kids are now not going to come down with Noro.

Tipsntoes · 30/01/2018 18:12

If the child was running around happily it wasn't noro

mumpoints · 30/01/2018 18:14

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork That's awful. Our pool is drained if anyone does any kind of "solids", vomit or poo.

PistFump · 30/01/2018 19:31

I wouldn't generalise that. My ds has had Noro several times and has ran around ((the house)) as normal between bouts of d&v.

RingFence · 30/01/2018 19:39

I didn't think of travel sickness. I overheard the mum telling her friend she didn't know why she was sick, so I assumed the worst!

I wouldn't dream of taking my DD into a toddler group if she'd just vomited. I'd play safe and take her home.
She's had plenty of sickness bugs from nursery, not as violent as noro but contagious. Often she's just sick once yet I catch it and spend a week chained to the bathroom!

I just wish people would think about others instead of spreading bugs.

Imnotposhjustquaint · 30/01/2018 19:52

NO WAY! That’s so irresponsible of the child’s mother. Whether it’s travel sickness or not, you can’t be sure so you turn the car around and go straight home!

It’s the height of selfishness to take a child who may have a sickness bug amongst other children. When MIL was having chemotherapy we were told that it was imperative that she wasn’t exposed to sickness bugs and we were also told similar after DD had been in hospital with sepsis.

On the face of things it might not seem like such a big risk but if you think of the bigger picture it’s an utterly, utterly stupid thing to do.

caffeinequick · 30/01/2018 20:05

I'd ask if she was travel sick. As the Mum was prepared with new clothes and unperturbed I'd say it was the most likely explanation.

Moreisnnogedag · 30/01/2018 20:11

If you’ve been advised to stay away from contagious situations, I would avoid all toddler groups tbh. They’re a bug haven and lots of viral illness are contagious before symptoms appear.

I would have assumed travel sickness, especially with a child raring around afterwards.

SuperBeagle · 30/01/2018 20:14

I would also assume travel sickness.

Tiredmum100 · 30/01/2018 20:56

I'd think it was travel sickness to be honest. My youngest gets travel sick a fair bit. If the child was unwell I'd think it was a bug, but if they were running around fine I'd assume travel sickness.

UgandanKnuckles · 30/01/2018 21:00

Depends, I used to get horrendous travel sickness as a child. I'd have never gone anywhere!
