To not have a tooth extracted 5 days before I am due to give birth?

I have to have a tooth removed..not a fan of dentists as it is which may be colouring my decision a little. But i am due a week wednesday...do i really want to be recovering from a tooth removal and potentially looking after a newborn?

Would i be unreasonable to rebook for a month or so even though the tooth in question had an abcess last week? I genuinely don't know what to do..

Get it done now. Much better than having to have it done as an emergency when you’ve got a small baby.

BaldricksTrousers · 28/01/2018 18:52

If you don't do it now, how long will it reallistically take you to go back? Will the excuse then be, I don't have time to recover from a tooth removal with a newborn around?

What about antibiotics and other drugs you might need?

Bite the bullet and get it done If you can. If anything, the pain of delivery/surgery will make you forget the tooth...

I had my wisdom teeth cut out when pregnant. Couldn't have any anaesthetic but local. It was grim.

PineappleScrunchie · 28/01/2018 18:52

Ps I’ve had a wisdom tooth pulled in the dentists chair. After a few hours I was back to normal. There shouldn’t be that much “recovery”.

Deshasafraisy · 28/01/2018 18:53

Get it over and done with. It’s usually fine in a couple of days and it could be another couple of weeks before your baby arrives. Better to be able to recover while you don’t have a newborn to look after.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 28/01/2018 18:55

Yep, get it done asap! You don't want to have to arrange a dentist appointment with a newborn - btdt and it's not easy. (wisdom tooth removal 2 weeks pp!)

MotherOfDragons22 · 28/01/2018 18:57

Thats me told! Thanks guys i will man up and get it sorted! [Grin]

Imagine being in labour with raging toothache. Just get it sorted now.

I’m a very nervous patient with anything dental and was dreading having a wisdom tooth removed. I needed to (it had grown at an angle and was impacted against another tooth). After getting very wound up and nervous I did go in the end. It took seconds and was totally fine. I was able to eat lunch (on the other side of my mouth) relatively comfortably 2 or 3 hours later and aside from some numbness and a little sensitivity there was no real recovery at all - by the evening I was 100% fine. Your call, of course, but it will be a lot easier to have done now than with a newborn in tow. And given the abscess history I know what I’d do - definitely get it out now!

SuzanneSays · 28/01/2018 18:59

Ate you sure you can have the pain relief if you are pregnant? I had a wisdom tooth out and they had to inject me loads before I couldn’t feel anything?

viques · 28/01/2018 19:02

I had to have an extraction the other week (huge ancient filling in a back tooth, some infection, and funny roots so canal work not advised) the whole thing was painless (even the injection) the site felt a bit strange for a day or two but that has been it. No antibiotics or painkillers needed post extraction. The only downside was the dentist managed to dislodge a crown, but that was put back a few days later.

I would not want to risk an abscess flaring up when you are exhausted from a new born, plus possibly having to take painkillers and antibiotics does not sound good if you are breastfeeding. Have the extraction , by the time your baby is here, and congratulations btw, you will be healing and comfortable.

Tstar27 · 28/01/2018 19:04

I would like the others advise to get it done now. I had two wisdom teeth removed and recovery for me was about three days. The first two days I felt awful and couldn't eat much. One tooth was near a nerve and as a result it made the recovery time longer. Passed and threw up as a result of the anaesthetic but felt much better the third day.

You should by the fifth day feel almost 100%

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/01/2018 19:07

I had one out ten days before I gave birth. It wasn’t an issue, and was easier without having a child in tow.

Good luck.

SimultaneousEquation · 28/01/2018 19:08

Get it out the way. Good luck with it Flowers

AmethystRaven · 28/01/2018 19:08

It will be easier before and you should be fine recovery wise as long as you follow the guidelines they give you (not too hot food, no rinsing straight after etc).

Just before I had my wisdom tooth out my dentist said 'Come on then Bab, let's numb it up and give it a wiggle' Grin and that's really all there was to it. Over in minutes!

Seniorcitizen1 · 28/01/2018 19:08

Tooth out one day recoverd next - get on with it

Bluefargo · 28/01/2018 19:22

I left a tooth and on day 9 after giving birth it became abcessed. Had the most painful 2 days while waiting for anti biotics to kick in and had to stop breastfeeding for a week after as one of the anti biotics you couldn’t feed on. My supply never recovered and only managed to breast feed for 3 months.

Definitely get it treated now!

Chaosofcalm · 28/01/2018 19:31

I had a wisdom tooth removed durring early pregnancy. I was only allowed paracetamol for the pain afterwards.

RadioGaGoo · 28/01/2018 19:33

Do you not need an x-ray before extraction? I couldn't get tooth work done before I gave birth because of the x-ray.

RadioGaGoo · 28/01/2018 19:34

And yes, as IncyWincy said, much easier to do without child in tow.

hmcAsWas · 28/01/2018 19:37

I don't recall my tooth extraction being particularly bothersome once it was removed

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 28/01/2018 19:48

Get that tooth OUT ! It will come back mark
My words and nature has a funny way of working out . Recovery is 3 days normally x

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/01/2018 19:50

If the tooth is visibly fucked they don’t need an x-ray. I was just asked if I wanted it extracting or if I wanted to start the root canal process (I was given the odds of success). Took a hell of a lot of effort for him to get it out, but I didn’t feel a damn thing thanks to the copious amounts of local in my face.

I even managed to go for a coffee with a friend same afternoon. I skipped the toastie though!

Christmascardqueen · 28/01/2018 20:00

A dental infection can lead to more systemic infections. Don’t delay get it treated ASAP.

robertaplumkin · 28/01/2018 20:11

i slammed my thumb in the car door 1 week before i had my baby. honestly, a little bit more pain in the ocean of pain that is the first few weeks is nothing. i had a 'normal' delivery too Grin

dancinfeet · 28/01/2018 22:11

Again, I say get it done asap. I had a wisdom tooth removed when my youngest was 3 days old. Baby slept fairly well at night, but the bloody toothache was keeping me awake!!
