Hoover as a present

My mil has been saying for a while that she wants a Henry hoover. She only works pt and cares for disabled bil the rest of the time so doesn't have spare cash.
She's been helping me a lot with childcare recently as I've been injured. I bought her a massage voucher as a thank you but wibu to buy her the hoover too? I see people on here complain about gifts like that and I wouldn't consider it for a birthday or Christmas gift (we always get nice treat gifts for them) but would it be ok for a 'just because' gift or is it still naff?

I would be delighted with a decent Hoover Grin

drquin · 26/01/2018 19:15

Buy it .... I wouldn't get excited about a hoover if I didn't fancy one, but she clearly does!

UpstartCrow · 26/01/2018 19:16

If you don't she'll have to use her own money or go without, if it were me I'd do it. I think people complain when its a birthday present from a partner and they get something that's for the house.

Idontdowindows · 26/01/2018 19:17

I would be delighted if I had expressed a wish for a hoover I couldn't quite afford and one of my daughters in law bought it for me.

As a matter of fact I was very recently extremely delighted when one of my daughters in law bought me a wholly utilitarian item I wanted, but couldn't quite afford to buy new and was looking to buy secondhand :)

Mycatisahacker · 26/01/2018 19:17

Of course that’s a lovely thoughtful gift.

We brought our son and dil a dyson as they wanted one as part of s Christmas gift. They were delighted Grin

kaytee87 · 26/01/2018 19:18

Well that's encouraging. I think it's because house stuff isn't usually considered a gift that it made me wonder whether she'd wonder why on Earth I'd bought her it!
Think I will order it tonight then Smile

It's only a bad gift if it's unwanted by the recipient, if she wants it then it's a brilliant gift.

notthe1Parrot · 26/01/2018 19:20

Sounds like just what she wants, so why not?

Last year at Christmas, I gave DH an iron and he gave me a new toilet seat! We were both delightedGrin

LRL2017 · 26/01/2018 19:21

Buy it! I got a hoover Christmas before last and it was best present ever!

ThisLittleKitty · 26/01/2018 19:22

I would love it if someone bought me a dyson for my birthday. I think people only complain when their oh buys it.

kaytee87 · 26/01/2018 19:23

I'd better order spare bags for it too actually while I remember.

YANBU

I think a present of a hoover from a husband partner is a different kettle of fish from a hoover as a present for other relationships. It's just not really a gift for within a romantic relationship.

kaytee87 · 26/01/2018 19:24

And at the same time send my mum some flowers as she's been helping lots too but is hard to buy for as she has plenty of spare money!

I'm hankering after a Shark pet Hoover atm - might ask for it for my 40th from my family lol. Nowt wrong with useful presents if people have actually asked for them!

The year I got my car tax as my 'birthday present' from my XH however prob explains part of why he is my ex Grin

Samewitches · 26/01/2018 19:33

I would present the massage voucher as a birthday present, so wrapped with the card attached and then give the hoover at the same time as a 'thank you for all your help, we really appreciate you' gift. So you got her a massage for her birthday and the hoover she wanted as a thank you.

kaytee87 · 26/01/2018 19:34

Ive given her the massage voucher already :) not her birthday til the second half of the year.

My dsis and mum bought me a brilliant cordless vacuum for Christmas , it’s a great present .

agentdaisy · 26/01/2018 19:36

Things like hoovers are rubbish gifts from a partner or for Christmas/birthday if they haven't been asked for.

However, a couple of years ago I'd been eyeing up a new hoover as the one I had was crap but I couldn't afford a new one. I was delighted when my dad offered to give me the money for the one I was after as a Christmas present.

It's all about context and circumstances as to whether it's a fantastic gift or a naff one. As she's been wanting one for a while but can't afford it herself I'd definitely get her one.

barefoofdoctor · 26/01/2018 19:39

I'd love Hettie Hoover as a present (read that they aren't that good so bought a Vax).

boatrace30 · 26/01/2018 19:41

If you know she wants one then get it. I wanted money toward one for Christmas but everyone said "no you can't have that". Ended up with vouchers for a pregnancy massage (I'm 30weeks) which is lovely but I'd rather have had the money towards the vacuum!

Idontdowindows · 26/01/2018 19:42

My Henry is 20 years old now. Recently gave him a new hose and he's good for another 20 years :D

FinallyHere · 26/01/2018 19:46

Sounds like a lovely idea to buy her a Henri.

I would do an adoption certificate, Henry looking for a new home rather than wrap it up as a gift.

You sound very kind, its a lovely thing to do, to give someone exactly what they want, ratehr than what you want to give.

Chesntoots · 26/01/2018 20:08

I have been hanging my nose over a Dyson for months but couldn't justify the cost. My partner bought me one for Christmas and I was over the moon!!

I would rather have someone buy me something I want than spend money on "stuff". My whole family is like that, so nobody gets arsey or accused of being ungrateful...
