Why does CBeebies do this?

Am off poorly and spending too much time letting the smallest one watch telly.

My question is; why do they get TV stars to voice their programmes? DD doesn't care that eamon Holmes is voicing biggleton, or Kathy Burke is voicing that monster thing. It seems every program has a Celeb voicing it. I can think of loads more. I even think I heard Christopher Biggins being the Crab in Duggee.

Surely this costs a shit ton of licence payers money . THE KIDS DON'T CARE AND NEITHER DO I.

I’ve thought this too. In fact although I’m a big fan of Kathy Burke, I find her voice as the monster teacher doesn’t work.

shakemysilliesout · 26/01/2018 17:43

I care about this because Eamon really ruins biggleton for me. So I 2nd your idea of using an unknown for less ££. I don't know why they do it.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 26/01/2018 17:46

I also find it weird when celebs do cartoon films. I would nt be anymore likely to watch a kid’s cartoon with Scarlett Johanssen voicing a rabbit than an unknown.

Elementally · 26/01/2018 17:46

I totally agree. Fearne Cotton was voicing the speakers on Teletubbies for a while. Just why? Any actor out there could do it there's hardly a shortage of out of work actors.

liz70 · 26/01/2018 17:49

Oh, I know. Curse these dratted actor/actress types, doing character voices for children's programmes. Who do they think they are? And don't get me started on that Mark Rylance. Honestly, who'd have thought of it.

TheBrilliantMistake · 26/01/2018 17:52

They do it because they aren't producing for children. They are producing for parents with children who will then decide what their children will watch. Ultimately they are selling the notion of professional programming to parents. If the parents are persuaded, they buy the books, dvd, toys etc.

Without doubt they could use other people, I just think they believe a celebrity gives it legitimacy, which should strengthen the chance of success, keep a production team in employment and make more money. Quite formulaic when you think about it.

Slanetylor · 26/01/2018 17:53

I suppose for some big movies the director knows what voice he/she wants and knows what actors would have the perfect voice for the role. But I have no explanation for why CBeeBies do it as it doesn't always work or seems completely wrong. I do LOVE Chris O Dowd narrating Puffin Rock but hate James cordans Charlie Bear.

Nuffaluff · 26/01/2018 17:53

Bing is my favourite CBeebies programme. I could listen to that man talking all day.
Also, he is such a brilliant actor - he’s obviously put a lot of thought into Flop. What a professional.

Nuffaluff · 26/01/2018 17:54

My favourite episode is when Flop is a bit poorly

Hobbitch · 26/01/2018 17:56

I love Derek Jacobi as the narrator of In the night garden.

TheBrilliantMistake · 26/01/2018 17:57

But Liz, the BBC is using public money, so it's right to question how the money is spent.

Without talented actors shouldn't be punished just for being talented and well known, but is it appropriate to pay Michelangelo to paint your skirting boards?

mumpoints · 26/01/2018 17:57

Flop: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rylance

"In 2016, he was named in the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world."

Shock
TheBrilliantMistake · 26/01/2018 17:58

*without doubt

liz70 · 26/01/2018 18:01

Television isn't a necessity. If you don't like it, stop watching BBC programmes and any live tv, then you won't have to pay a licence fee anymore.

Nuffaluff · 26/01/2018 18:01

mumpoints
Blimey! Maybe it’s his magical hypnotic voice.

liz70 · 26/01/2018 18:04

I watcher Wolf Hall recently. I'm sure he'd have fared better if he'd have treated HVIII as an even bigger Bing.

InDubiousBattle · 26/01/2018 18:05

Bloody hell mumpoints why the hell did he do Bing? Someone must have something on him!

I always assume they do it for a reduced fee because they have kids themselves.

Buglife · 26/01/2018 18:06

I often notice that the voice actors and CBeebies bedtime stories people often star in BBC drama or do radio for them so I assume they don’t do it as a high paying job but as a sort of extra on the side! Rylance was doing Wolf Hall when Bing started up wasn’t he? And often there are only about 20 episodes of a show and they just get played daily so they would have only spent a couple of days doing the voice work, they aren’t coming in every week! A couple of days and it’s repeated for years.

Also Fearne Cotton had about 2 lines which just get repeated on Teletubbies and as she works for BBC radio she probably did that on her break! I also think the Bedtime story people do it for peanuts. I don’t worry they pay them thousands anyway. They’ll pay their regular voice people more if they do lots of shows hence more work.

foxyariel · 26/01/2018 18:10

Bing's voice is SOOO irritating [missing point completely].

Nuffaluff · 26/01/2018 18:16

I thought Bing had been around for ages.
Oh well, I don’t suppose there will ever be any more episodes now as he’s probably too busy doing films.

Raver84 · 26/01/2018 18:35

Hi have no clue as to why the cebebies keep making so many new programmes at all as frankly by the time kid have watched every episode of in the night garden or charlie and lola they have grown up into another programme or off onto milkshake, pop or cbbc. So woulsnt notice a repeat series. They spend loads it seems creating new programmes for a target audience of under 4 years old who neither care or remember.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 26/01/2018 18:40

Ds2 has discovered the Biggleton game online. I just want to scream "SHUT UP EAMON!" after about thirty seconds.

BettyMorris · 26/01/2018 19:18

My current bugbear with cbeebies is nothing to do with this topic, it is that last week my husband started singing "what's on your face?" Instead of "what's on your plate?" And now I can't unhear it and sing/think it wrong every day.

I love Derek Jacobi on in the night garden. Bing would be less of a dick if Flop told him off once in a while. Enough with the soothing, gentle voice Flop and tell Bing to wind his neck in.

Me264 · 26/01/2018 19:41

Love love love Derek Jacobi on ITNG and Alexander Armstrong on Hey Duggee. Mark Rylance is great but Bing and by association Flop are so annoying that MR can't save it.

Yabu purely for Roger Allam and Sarah and Duck
