I've just msgd my DP (of 8 months) to ask if he could print some PDF's for me at work, as my own printer has just given up the ghost and I can't get out to access another right now - these are doc's for Uni which I could really do with asap and he usually comes to mine of a Friday evening so thought he could bring them.

Anyway, he said no problem and gave me his personal (Sky) address, only he has to wait to use his mum's printer before coming to mine, instead of just using the one at work. This happened a few months ago, too, where for some reason, he was hesitant to give me his work email add and I'm now wondering why - does he not trust me? He works for the government so does he think maybe we might split and I'll give his email add out? Hmm

I know this may sound a bit daft, but why would he not just give me his works email? Sad

I agree with what has been said about him not being allowed.

I wasn't allowed to email myself from my private account to my work email, in case of Spam, hacking etc.

It isn't worth him getting a disciplinary just because you want him to do your printing at Work.

If you had to hand in paper copies couldn't you have done that at Uni?

Racmactac · 26/01/2018 14:45

All my emails are monitored by my boss and his boss. They read everything.
We are not allowed to use emails for personal use or use printer.

pastabest · 26/01/2018 14:46

Doesn't matter how laid back it is, printing personal stuff off at work is technically theft even if it only amounts to a few pence on that occasion.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 26/01/2018 14:46

I used to work for a place where all incoming emails were quarantined, the recipient was sent an email from IT Services and the email only forwarded on to the intended recipient, if it was considered work related and essential.

It cut down on spam, malware and non-essential use, but it was a pain in the arse when an overexcited family member sent pictures of their hours old newborn and I received an email stating

An external email with attachments has arrived. Please call....."

Because I wasn't expecting anything and IT wouldn't give me the originating email address, I couldn't explain who would send potential malware or why. Hmm

Took two days to sort out what happened there. Confused

DerelictWreck · 26/01/2018 14:46

I worked for the government (central dept) and use email and printer for personal reasons no problem! We've never had any issue

Thistlebelle · 26/01/2018 14:47

Btw for when you finish uni and start working, it’s not just government jobs that screen email and monitor personal use of email, internet and printing.

It’s most companies of any reasonable size.

Mellodrama · 26/01/2018 14:47

Birdsgottafly I'm Open Uni, and literally can't get to a library as I have to pick my DS's up from school in 15 mins!

Sometimes I just need a good smacking of sense into me, thankyou guys ! My anxiety always tells me there are sinister reasons for things, as opposed to the blindingly obvious at times BlushConfused

If he’s just said he wasn’t allowed rather than fannying on it would have done and dusted a while back.

AuntLydia · 26/01/2018 14:48

It can be a laid back atmosphere and he may have a laid back line manager but IT policy will be set higher up by someone else.

Mellodrama · 26/01/2018 14:49

Thistlebell Every company I've worked for has always been pretty laid back with this, and I have worked for some large, international ones!

Mellodrama · 26/01/2018 14:50

gamer chick see exactly!! I don't know why he couldn't have just said this, that way I wouldn't be letting my anxiety cloud my mind right now! Confused

It's not just government that monitor work emails.
My dc's work in none government companies, they have policies in place. Becuase they know I helped to create my work policy they actually bothered to read theirs.

AcrossthePond55 · 26/01/2018 15:05

Former Govt employee here, too.

Emails defo monitored, personal printing not allowed. Our printers also kept copies of printed docs somehow so management would have been able to check if they thought someone had done so.

Jux · 26/01/2018 15:05

Are you normally this paranoid?

JeReviens · 26/01/2018 15:08

Is "pi$$ed" meant to read "pissed"? That's some great subterfuge right there - who'd ever have guessed?

hiphopchick · 26/01/2018 15:10

@mellodrama

YABU. I would not give my husband my work email address, and we have been together 20 years. So I definitely wouldn't be giving it to a boyfriend of 8 months!

Possessive much?! Shock

hiphopchick · 26/01/2018 15:11

Like some others, I am in a high security career, and it would be inadvisable to give my work email to friends and family. What's more, they don't need to have it. Not my work's one.

Jux · 26/01/2018 15:16

We say "pissed" on this forum. Those words are allowed: shit fuck bugger etc. No problem.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/01/2018 15:18

It only takes one person to see him doing non work stuff and he could be in big trouble.

Karigan1 · 26/01/2018 15:20

Perhaps because emails at work are monitored, use of printers is monitored and he could get fired.....

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/01/2018 15:24

I work for local.government. we are
Told not to use work email addresses for personal stuff. Also, we have no means of paying for any private printng or photocopying we do so cannot do it.

My dh works for a charity. They are allowed to print/photocopy at work as long as they pay for it. I think it's 3p per sheet for b&w, 10p for colour.

I really wouldn't read anything sinister into it. I've never given my work email address to friends or family. They can contact me on my home email or by text if they need to.

niknok69 · 26/01/2018 15:44

Oh Dear....you don't trust him one bit do you?

Shufflebumnessie · 26/01/2018 15:47

Where I work we each have to log in to a printer using our individual unique code therefore everything we print can be traced back to the person and the computer you sent it from. There is no way I'd be able to print off more than the very occasional personal item (think 1 page every few months).

Trinity66 · 26/01/2018 15:49

Why didn't you just ask him though? The conversation probably would have went a bit like this and you would never have been pissed off :

You : Can i send you something to print of for me?
DP : Of course send it my personal email and I'll print it later
You : Can i not send it you in work instead?
DP : Nah I'm not allowed personal emails at work

Grin
ShastaTrinity · 26/01/2018 16:01

Even if private companies can be quite relaxed about it, it's usually in the contract or the staff handbook that they can monitor all your emails if you chose to, and that private use is not permitted.

It's a very useful tool to get rid of people when you need to show valid legal reasons.
