To feel sorry for this doctor?

HarryStylesismycrack · 25/01/2018 16:05

I am not in any way downplaying the death of that beautiful little boy and it is clearly acknowledged there were some failures by the doctor in question however AIBU to feel as though this intervention by the GMC into the independent decision making by the MPTS is concerning? It appears to me that the MPTS took into account many things, not just the outcome (which I completely acknowledge is heartbreaking), the fact that this doctor was working the job of several other medical staff in an unfamiliar environment with significant IT issues with no senior input. It feels like this doctor has been made a bit of a scapegoat for huge systemic failures.

It terrifies me that people can go to prison for making mistakes at work.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/01/2018 17:13

@ALLIS0N How does it feel up there in your ivory tower preaching down to us mere mortals?

StripeySoul · 25/01/2018 17:16

Oh that's so sad

VladmirsPoutine · 25/01/2018 17:16

It terrifies me that people can go to prison for making mistakes at work.

It shouldn't terrify you that actions have at time unpalatable consequences for those involved. I have a lot of sympathy for this doctor and nurse and think they've been scape-goated. But people who have a duty of care should be held accountable. This isn't someone in McDonalds that served you a Cheeseburger instead of the Quarter pounder you asked for. But had you explicitly said you had a dairy intolerance then yes, they should be held to account.

GlitterNails · 25/01/2018 17:17

This sounds really appalling and like the doctor was doing her best. Anyone doing the work of four people with IT down is going to struggle and it sounds like the department screwed up for not having proper cover.

I would only expect manslaughter to apply if she did something awful that caused a death, not just a general catalogue of errors where everything went wrong where no one person is to blame.

sepsisandAKI · 25/01/2018 17:17

Poor family to have lost a child. How terrible for those two professionals just trying to get through another day doing there best. Overworked everyday.

worridmum · 25/01/2018 17:19

Whats worse is people can go to prison for the fault of the government the cuts to the NHS are not sestainable (they are not meant to be its an effort to drive the NHS into the gorund so they can get away with selling it privately download or read a summery of George osburnes book about how he would sell of the NHS (please don't buy it read a summary or get it another way just dont give him money by buying it)

The similarites between how he would sell it of and how things are currently happening is near identical...

GlitterNails · 25/01/2018 17:20

ALLIS0N - I get what you are saying, but you know a lot of people didn't vote Tory right?

sallyarmy1 · 25/01/2018 17:21

Please try and keep the damn 'racist' card out of this.

It is boring and predictable, so is having less and less impact.

Blaming everything on 'racism' is diluting the ACTUAL meaning of that word, to the point that people are now just dismissing it.

Discusting · 25/01/2018 17:21

I think people should be held to account, but prison for someone jist trying to go their job seems very harsh.

Why would anyone train to be a doctor or nurse if they know they could end up in prison for making mistakes?

sallyarmy1 · 25/01/2018 17:24

I voted 'Tory' because of what the labour party did to the NHS.

I would still vote Tory, because of what labour would do to the NHS IF (gawd forbid) they ever got in.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/01/2018 17:28

Tory voters are inherently awful people. There, I said it.

AreYouOrHaveYouEverBeenATERF · 25/01/2018 17:29

Awful. You have to wonder if there's an element of racism involved here, there is definitely scapegoating.

She was doing 4 people's jobs?!

That is actually very scary - management are just not coping, and then prepared to scapegoat individual doctors for systemic failure.

incywincybitofa · 25/01/2018 17:29

Allison you sound like you might be a manager.

I do not understand why the GMC took the decision it did and I do think they need to explain why they over-ruled a respected independent body, to come to a finding that respected medical professionals disagree with.

sallyarmy1 · 25/01/2018 17:36

Vlad

If voting Tory makes me an awful person, then fine.

Rather be called that than a murderer and terrorist supporter.

I personally do not know any labour supporters, so all is well in my world :)

shakeyourcaboose · 25/01/2018 17:41

@fortybingowings- how do we complain to GMC would there be a case number required?

HarryStylesismycrack · 25/01/2018 17:45

I’m so heartened to read everyone’s responses. I was half worried I’d be shouted down because after all at the heart of it is a little boy who died 😞

Shake- I would just google the GMC to find their website and email contact. I would write to them that way

Devilishpyjamas · 25/01/2018 17:53

Please be as incensed by the unnecesary deaths of those with learning disabilities. 1,200 people with learning disabilities die needlessly each year. A lot of those deaths will be due to system type failures that this doctor has been held responsible for. They’re two sides of the same coin.

The Richard Handley inquest is being live tweeted this week. Slopey shoulders aplenty. whobyf1re.wordpress.com/2018/01/25/shitstorm/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
