To feel sorry for this doctor?

I am not in any way downplaying the death of that beautiful little boy and it is clearly acknowledged there were some failures by the doctor in question however AIBU to feel as though this intervention by the GMC into the independent decision making by the MPTS is concerning? It appears to me that the MPTS took into account many things, not just the outcome (which I completely acknowledge is heartbreaking), the fact that this doctor was working the job of several other medical staff in an unfamiliar environment with significant IT issues with no senior input. It feels like this doctor has been made a bit of a scapegoat for huge systemic failures.

Yes, I have heard this from a number of sources. In all honesty, I can't say I can encourage trainees to be truly honest in their reflective practice. Best to reflect privately to themselves, and perhaps with their trainer/supervisor, but not commit anything to paper/eportfolio and certainly not publicly. This ought to make SEA's interesting.... and utterly ineffectual.

I agree re the GMC has totally undermined, in well fell-swoop, the whole move towards openness and learning from mistakes, not seeking to blame one person (unless genuine malpractice or gross negligence has occurred) and seeking to really understand where things have gone wrong so that we can genuinely learn from mistakes/where things haven't gone smoothly. The GMC have, by doing this, have caused untold damage to the trust the profession has in it (which wasn't necessarily high anyway) and has set back moves to improve patient safety. It's a travesty.

well fell-swoop? One fell swoop!

Good news

MrsJoshDun · 01/04/2018 22:56

Great news.

AnyFucker · 01/04/2018 22:59

Btw, Draylon, I have just reread your post from last month that referenced incidents in the aviation industry and had a little weep. It's been a bad day today. Somebody gets it, but not enough people who can do anything about it.

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/04/2018 23:57

Sorry it's been a bad day for you AF. Have a commiserating ((( )))

AnyFucker · 02/04/2018 08:37

Ta

asphodelus · 13/08/2018 14:26

Fingers crossed that the court sees sense today.

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/08/2018 14:29

Has she got an appeal today?

kinseymilhone · 13/08/2018 15:20

Just read on breaking news that she has won her Appeal thank goodness

TedAndLola · 13/08/2018 16:17

Oh that's such good news!

user139328237 · 13/08/2018 16:25

What are the court thinking.
How can we have any trust in the medical profession if they are held to a lower standard than under criminal law which requires proof beyond reasonable doubt that her actions or inactions caused the death of the child and that a somewhat competent person would have acted differently.

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/08/2018 16:35

Right decision. Really pleased.

asphodelus · 13/08/2018 16:43

@user139328237 you really need to read about the background of the case and the systemic failures.

Fortybingowings · 13/08/2018 16:48

The appeal decision is the right one.
The level of misunderstanding and hate towards HBG in the comments posted online today is staggering. Makes me want to weep.
Hell will freeze over before I allow any child of mine to follow me into the medical profession.

NorthernLurker · 13/08/2018 20:28

Very pleased by the outcome. Looking at what goes wrong and understanding and being honest about the factors at play is crucial to keep patients safe. This is the right decision and I hope will result I. A good doctor resuming her career.

Dd1 is a medical student. The reaction of the family in this case is not unique and is one of the things that made me try to put her off.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 13/08/2018 20:33

Totally the right decision.

Am horrified by the media coverage of this. Everything I’ve read has been totally misleading and doesn’t present any of the systematic failings.

Bluelady · 13/08/2018 20:35

That poor doctor was thrown under the bus. I was so pleased she won today.

jacks11 · 13/08/2018 20:44

I am another who is glad the right decision has been made. Nothing will never bring little Jack Adcock back, and my heart does go out to his family who are obviously still suffering greatly, but hanging one person out to dry and ignoring the vast systemic failures that were the ultimate cause of this tragedy does nothing to prevent it happening again.
