To ask how you keep on top of the house work?

I have 4 kids and wow I am really struggling to keep on top of it! It's not dirty just messy. There are forever clothes hanging up everywhere to dry as I have constant piles of washing. The dishes hardly ever done, don't think the sinks ever been empty since I've had the youngest. How do you manage to keep on top of the house work if you have young kids?

Getting up at 5.30am so I can get ready and do stuff before the kids get up. A husband who does half of everything (both work) so when we get in we both crack on with everything quick as poss and aim to be all done by 8 so we can watch telly together for - -5 minutes before I fall asleep drooling on the sofa- - for an hour or so.
Don’t sit down till it’s all done the night before otherwise it will be there, growling at you when you wake up Grin

TeasndToast · 25/01/2018 13:36

Cross out fail!

BornInALighthouse · 25/01/2018 13:49

I just have to kind of leave DD to it with her toys for a bit after breakfast. But there's only 1 child here and a really small house.

mumpoints · 25/01/2018 13:51

I have a cleaner and HAVE to pick up before she comes or it is a waste of her time. It forces me to do it even if I have to stay up late.

whateveryousay · 25/01/2018 13:51

I also have four kids, and use a downloaded task sheet from a website called ‘motivated moms’ (cheesy name I know!). I just don’t go to bed til I’ve ticked off everything for that day. Also get up at 6am, before anyone else.

Shmithecat · 25/01/2018 13:53

Do you work OP? How old are your dcs?

KnittedBobbleHat · 25/01/2018 13:54

Get your kids to pitch in if they're old enough

Merryoldgoat · 25/01/2018 13:56

I don't. It's fucking hideous.

InDubiousBattle · 25/01/2018 13:58

How old are your dc? How big is your house?

Dishwasher (I would lovea dishwasher!)and a dryer would help enormously I would have thought.

PistFump · 25/01/2018 14:00

I don't keep on top of it at all. My place is a shit tip and I'm sick of it. And I can't afford a cleaner.

Bluedoglead · 25/01/2018 14:01

I don’t. I would love a cleaner.

Topseyt · 25/01/2018 14:02

Dishwasher and tumble dryer.

I guess I am never actually totally on top of it, but they made it manageable when my three were very young.

LittleFeileFooFoo · 25/01/2018 14:02

I don't either. Were talking about a cleaner. Dh and i both work

ThisLittleKitty · 25/01/2018 14:04

Kitchen is too small for dishwasher unfortunately. Kids are under 7. And not working no. Tbh it's been like this since the baby. Before I could keep on top of it but she's so clingy.

I have 2 small DC and a cleaner. It forces us to tidy the house till it's perfect before she comes. I think that is almost more useful than the cleaning!

Afreshcuppateaplease · 25/01/2018 14:06

Op i have 4 under 10 and i cant do it either

Bluedoglead · 25/01/2018 14:06

You can get a Worktop dishwasher that goes on the draining board. I had one in a flat years ago and it was a pretty good job.

Ifailed · 25/01/2018 14:06

There's a difference between dirty & messy - embrace it! And as other have said, everyone in the house should be pitching in to help out.

Bluedoglead · 25/01/2018 14:07

Also. Get a tumbler. It’ll make it easy. Fold and put in boxes per person / bedroom and then at least you can dump the box in the bedroom even if you never get it put away.

thecatsthecats · 25/01/2018 14:07

I got a cleaner.

That's not bragging, just admitting that we weren't keeping on to of it, and we don't have kids.

DayKay · 25/01/2018 14:10

Mine isn’t spotless but it’s ok.
I have a dishwasher, I try to tidy living room and kitchen every evening including hoover.
Bathroom once a week.
I also have a drier so almost all laundry gets dried straight away.

Kids help out with chores. They can tidy and hoover, they put their own clean laundry away and dirty laundry in the right place.

Kursk · 25/01/2018 14:12

DH gets up at 6.00 does 40mins of chores every morning. He gets home at 5:30. 5:30-8:00 every day is dinner and get jobs done time.

After that we relax before bedtime at10:00

ThisLittleKitty · 25/01/2018 14:13

I'm glad it's not just me. It's just when I go to other peoples houses I envy how tidy it is. My sisters house is spotless, though she only has one child who is a teenager.

OP posts:
Kursk · 25/01/2018 14:13

Oh kids help out too.

rabbit12345 · 25/01/2018 14:14

I have 5 children and if you walked in my house you would think I was well organised. I am not but have become a master at hiding it.

It is a never ending cycle so it doesn’t hurt if it doesn’t get done.

Main things I ensure that there is not dirty dishes in sink or laundry laying around and I am a master swish and swipe person I keep on top of the washing but have a hamper for dried washing and then bulk iron with my headphones on.

I have no clutter and towels and bed sheets are used and washed until they look tired and then get replaced. Clothes are on a 1 in 1 out basis so that we do not get overloaded.

I probably spend 1 hour a day actively cleaning and then the rest is just pottering around. If I then see something that needs a clean I will do it rather than stick to a rota.
