Do patterned trousers on toddlers look like pyjamas?

2 people have commented on my DD's 'nice pyjamas' Blush
They're not PJs, they're patterned joggers (one pair blue with pandas, the other green velour with stars!) She also has a pair of Frugi snugs with a tartan pattern but nobody's said anything about those yet. She's 2.5.

What do others think? I'm mortified people think I take her out in her PJs!

My daughter's pjs could be a normal toddler outfit. They market them as different items so we buy more! Don't be offended, they're just complimenting the trousers, which sound lovely.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 25/01/2018 09:13

I think maybe on a 2.5 year old they can look like PJ's. Smaller babies can get away with it.

sunshinestorm · 25/01/2018 09:13

I've had this too... toddler DS was wearing cute patterned joggers and someone said 'Ahh all ready for bed are we?'

It's definitely made me a bit paranoid about dressing him in them! But I love patterned bottoms!

haba · 25/01/2018 09:16

And what if they do? Children can wear what they want (within reason).
Comfy clothes are the best.
DS had some gorgeous leggings with little woodland scenes- foxes, toadstools, pine trees - on them, and they were the cutest thing ever!

I blame pyjama manufacturers for making pyjamas so lovely nowadays!

ArcheryAnnie · 25/01/2018 09:19

PJ bottoms and joggers are essentially the same thing. I would't worry at all if someone mistakes the two.

CuppaSarah · 25/01/2018 09:22

They do and they're adorable. People think the same about ds' patterned joggers. But they're comfortable, easy to move in and so cute. So it doesn't matter!

2kidsnopets · 25/01/2018 09:23

I knew frugi would be in here somewhere!
I've just bought stripey kite joggeras for my DD and even I think they look a pit pyjama-ish but they are soft and comfy so I don't care. And she's 2, so she doesn't care either.

bluechameleon · 25/01/2018 09:24

I've had that a lot. But then again of you looked at DS's pyjamas and his other clothes you wouldn't necessarily see much difference so maybe people have a point! I do hesitate to do anything too matchy to avoid looking excessively pyjamary - e.g. an all over print on the bottoms then the same print as a large picture on the top.

There is really no difference between pyjamas & tracksuit bottoms. It probably has more to do with the preferences of the person making the comment.
Many people would not consider either as day wear and so would assume pyjamas.

LaurieMarlow · 25/01/2018 09:45

Who cares, patterned joggers are lovely for that age.

Choccyhobnob · 25/01/2018 11:15

I've never had anyone comment that my DS's trousers are pyjamas! Usually maxomorra or WAHM mum ones. Get a lot of "oh isn't he colourful" though Grin

mirime · 25/01/2018 15:07

DS wore pyjama bottoms as trousers and vice versa, nobody ever commented.

He's four now and is wearing a pyjama top as a t-shirt today because he spilt milk over his top and I grabbed what was nearest.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 25/01/2018 15:08

I much prefer seeing littlies in bright coloured leggings and comfy clothes than jeans and shirts.

Bodicea · 25/01/2018 15:14

DS 4 wears checked trousers from boden. I love him in them and they are nice and comfy. I have had the odd comment from people that they lood like PJs but they are normally from the type of people that put their little ones in Jeans all the time, which I hate! So horses for courses.

HildaZelda · 25/01/2018 15:34

I admired my SIL's 'new pyjamas' last week. They weren't pyjamas. She's 44.

Camomila · 25/01/2018 15:45

I had an M&S voucher from Christmas to spend so I spent this morning in the kids bit of M&S.
Anyways, I bought DS some patterned tracksuit bottoms from the ‘boys’ bit today...they are obviously trousers. I also looked in the baby bit and those trousers were much softer and more pyjama-like. So it could be a ‘thickness’ thing as well.

I like colour too, DSs wardrobe seems to be getting darker as he gets older (sad)

maddiemookins16mum · 25/01/2018 15:54

They can look the same (depending on the pattern). I'd not worry about it though.
I once dressed DD regularly in a sort of one piece outfit from DMIL, I loved it and used to put it on her when she was spending the day at DMIL's.
DMIL said to me one morning just after I'd dropped her off before going to work 'shall I get her dressed?'. I looked blank but then DMIL explained it was a nightime outfit (I checked in Boots a few days later and it was). We both laughed and agreed it was very much a daytime outfit too (despite the sleeping teddy/cradle pattern on it).

taskmaster · 25/01/2018 15:56

Does it matter? I'm wearing patterned trousers right now that look a bit like pyjamas, but I dont care.

honeysucklejasmine · 25/01/2018 15:58

My DC do have some trousers which were sold as pajama bottoms. They also have patterned trousers which aren't. I don't care, I just like bright colours and funky prints.

mumpoints · 25/01/2018 16:00

I have wondered this also!

I asked in a shop once whether a pair of bottoms were pyjamas or trousers, and they said their pyjamas had "flat seams" for comfort.

As for the look, I think there comes a time where patterns look pyjamary and out of place. A friend with an ENORMOUS three year old still dresses him in patterns and he looks like a giant toddler!

TrinitySquirrel · 25/01/2018 16:07

Does it matter Hmm

Meh - at DD's school half the kids wear what I'd class as pyjamas to class.

They still somehow seem to get the grades to go to MIT and Harvard.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 25/01/2018 16:40

My 2yo goes out in her pjs sometimes. As long as she's weather appropriate I call it a win.

Well yeah, to me it does because I don’t want people to think I’m some lazy slovenly fucker who can’t be arsed to dress herself or her children.

I wear joggers at home during the day, for nursery run etc. I don't know of anyone who sleeps in joggers though.

I think jeans and chinos look so uncomfortable on toddlers. They can't sprawl out or roll around in something stiff and restrictive.
