To think she's trying to pull a fast one?

Justonedayatatime11 · 25/01/2018 09:07

Selling an item of jewellery on Preloved. Had an offer, below what I wanted, but she was adamant she wanted the item. So far she's sent me 2 echeques via PayPal which I've refused to accept as they take up to 10 days to clear and she wants me to post the item ASAP. She's now saying she'll send me a bank transfer once I send her the post office tracking details. AIBU to think she's trying to pull a fast one and if I were to send it without payment first I'd never see any mine for it?!

Yep

Who does this? Can you block her or just ignore?

londonrach · 25/01/2018 09:09

Doesnt sound good. Be careful

teatwosugarspls · 25/01/2018 09:10

Yes!

If she can send a bank transfer, she can pay by PayPal and then your both protected. However it wouldn't surprise me if she were to raise a claim that's it's not been delivered, has been delivered damaged or isn't as described so I'd just stay clear of her.

DeliberatelyAwkward · 25/01/2018 09:10

I’m afraid I’m not familiar with an “e-cheque”. Why would the buyer use one of these instead of paying as normal through PayPal?

I suspect your instinct is probably correct

Penners99 · 25/01/2018 09:11

Scammer, avoid

eenymeenymaccaracca · 25/01/2018 09:14

Why on earth would she not do the bank transfer till you've posted it?! Well dodgy.

If you wanted to be sneaky you would post her an empty box, send her the tracking details, and see whether she really did a transfer before you sent the real thing. But that would still give you postage costs.

No way would I post the item without full cleared payment. She's already getting it cheap.

Merryoldgoat · 25/01/2018 09:16

Plus, you are the seller - she doesn't get to dictate the price. She might well 'be adamant' she wants it - you should be adamant she pays the right price.

Just tell her to go away and sell to someone willing to pay the right amount and on time.

bigtissue · 25/01/2018 09:16

You have a scammer there Hmm

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/01/2018 09:16

If she is adamant then she’ll pay the full price. Why would you accept a lower offer just because the buyer really wants the item? Confused

Justonedayatatime11 · 25/01/2018 09:22

Hmm, you're all saying what I think I knew but didn't want to admit to. For goodness sake, why do people do this?!

Piffle11 · 25/01/2018 09:22

Yes avoid her! TBH I don't think you should now sell to her at all ... isn't it possible for buyers to get money back from paypal quite easily? Or is that just when using ebay? I've heard of sellers being left out of pocket as buyers have then claimed the item was damaged/not as described, and they've been issued a refund without question. Like others have said, if she really wanted it she would have paid what you were asking and paid you in the manner that you wished without question. And why on earth would you post something before receiving a cleared payment?? Tell her no and wait for a better buyer: I know it can be tempting as you just want to sell and have done with it, but imagine how you will feel if/when this goes belly up and you have no payment and no necklace.

RestingBitchFaced · 25/01/2018 09:25

I always state PayPal only for this reason - avoid

worridmum · 25/01/2018 09:26

No its stupidly easy for buyers to get their money back even if you have jumped through all the right hoops so they get your item and their money back its stupid.

Justonedayatatime11 · 25/01/2018 09:26

Deliberately an echeque is when a buyer doesn't have enough funds in their PayPal account but has their bank account linked. Downside being it takes up to 10 days for an echeque to clear for the seller and this CF wants the item posted today!

OP posts:
Fabellini · 25/01/2018 09:27

PayPal - goods and services. You’re protected, and so’s the buyer. I’m on a couple of Facebook groups for things like that, handbags and stuff...and wouldn’t entertain doing it any other way.

Justonedayatatime11 · 25/01/2018 09:30

Fabellini that's what I requested as payment form and she still keeps trying to pay by echeque!

I never have funds in my paypal, it always pays from my account but doesn't use echeques?

IvorBiggun · 25/01/2018 09:33

Why is she in charge of this transaction?

Why are you allowing her to do this?

calzone · 25/01/2018 09:35

Now I want to know what you are selling as I might want it 😂😂

Gingefringe · 25/01/2018 09:37

Just because she's adamant she wants the item it doesn't mean you're obliged to sell it to her, and certainly not at a lower price.
She could pay by bank transfer before you send it - wait a couple of days incase there's any problem with the payment then post out to her. I don't think she has the same recourse for a refund with a bank transfer payment, so this is probably the best option for you.
I would avoid though

AgathaF · 25/01/2018 09:37

You wouldn't expect Amazon to send you goods and then you pay for them 10 days later, so why would she expect you to do that.

Personally, after some negative experiences, I'd avoid Paypal and only accept a bank transfer or cash.

MsHopey · 25/01/2018 09:38

A payment will be sent as an eCheque if your PayPal balance is not enough to cover the payment and you don’t have a card and a bank linked to your account.

Most of us have our bank accounts linked to our PayPal, so everything happens automatically. Whereas some people just transfer money from their account into their PayPal without actually linking their bank accounts, meaning it's less secure and harder for PayPal to retrieve any money.

Ellendegeneres · 25/01/2018 09:38

This is like me going into a shop and saying I really like that coat, but I’m going to give you half the price you’re selling it for because I really am interested and want it. Oh and by the way, I’m leaving you a piece of paper saying I’ll pay you because I have no cash, and you have no hope of ever getting the money from me either way.
You think a shop is going to say ‘sure Ellen, you really are insistent, even though we’ve never met you and don’t know you from Adam, we’ll allow it.’ Errrrrr.... no.

saladdays66 · 25/01/2018 09:41

No, no and no again. Sounds like a CF. Avoid her. And you have to receive the money before you post anything - obviously.

DotCottonDotCom · 25/01/2018 09:42

If she wants it that bad, she can wait, surely!

Just be blunt, you don't accept bank transfers for seller and buyer protection.
