Temp not coming down with calpol

janeylacey · 23/01/2018 21:13

9 week old: had jabs today and has now had three doses of calpol (last one at 8:15pm) but temperature is 38.5 and not coming down.

111 referred to OOH who said to monitor and take him to A&E if it got to 40.

He also said to continue administering calpol every 4 hours rather than limiting to 3 doses.

I'm worried as calpol isn't bringing temp down. What should I do?

Sorry no AIBU: posting for traffic as quite concerned for DS.

Try cooling him down with cold flannels. Take his his temperature now, if you are concerned A&E asap!!!

Discusting · 23/01/2018 21:16

When did you ring 111? I would follow their advice and monitor closely then make a GP appointment in the morning. However I’m not a trained healthcare prodessional.

Ring 111 again if you are concerned.

BifsWif · 23/01/2018 21:16

Did he have the meningitis vaccine today? I remember my little girl having a temp after that one.

Is he feeding/wet nappies?

BifsWif · 23/01/2018 21:17

Don’t cool him down with flannels or undress him, this used to be advised but the NHS advises against this now.

LambMadras · 23/01/2018 21:17

I find Nurofen far more effective at bringing down temperatures than Calpol.

blueberrypi27 · 23/01/2018 21:19

Please just follow 111s advice, there is already bad advice being given here. Damp flannels are no longer recommended. What further advice do you think you need?

Aeroflotgirl · 23/01/2018 21:19

I always cooled my babies down with cold flannels, and undressing, and my oldest is 10. I would definitely take the temperature again, if you are concerned, I would definitely go A&E.

BifsWif · 23/01/2018 21:19

It’s far more effective, but I don’t think you can give it until baby is 3 months?

blueberrypi27 · 23/01/2018 21:19

Lambmadras: if I remember correctly nurofen is not recommended at 9 weeks

Lovejoyfull · 23/01/2018 21:20

My GP told me calpol alone won’t bring the temperature down you will need to administer ibuprofen too. BUT as this is a nine week old baby please check this with a medical professional. Have you stripped the baby down to a nappy and applied cool flannels ?

BifsWif · 23/01/2018 21:20

Me too Aero, but I was told off when I told the triage nurse at A&E that I’d done that. Blush

Apparently it doesn’t bring a core temperature down like previously thought.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/01/2018 21:21

Oh right, ok BifsWif

Justgivemesomepeace · 23/01/2018 21:22

Try nurofen. I had the same problem with my ds. Calpol wasn't doing anything so I rang 111. They said some children just respond better to one or the other so try ibuprofen. It worked straight away.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2018 21:22

Too young for Nurofen. No to damp cloth but you can put fewer layers on

Justgivemesomepeace · 23/01/2018 21:23

Oh didn't click how old he was. Sorry

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 21:23

Don't use cold flannels it's not recommended.

Don't give nurofen to an under 3mo.

Strip down to nappy and lie with the baby on your bare chest. Your skin is good as regulating the babies temperature.

Did the baby have its vaccines recently? Any other symptoms? How are you taking the temperature?

I wouldn't panic too much, I know it's hard, I was anxious about everything when my ds was newborn. If 111 were at all worried they'd tell you to go to out of hours.

NHS advice for temperature in babies for op

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/how-to-take-your-babys-temperature/?#what-should-i-do-if-my-baby-has-a-fever

kaytee87 · 23/01/2018 21:26

Sorry have just seen the baby had jabs today. I really wouldn't worry too much, just follow 111s advice.

beansbananas · 23/01/2018 21:26

Try not to panic. Monitor the temperature and give calpol every 4 hours as instructed. My baby was very drowsy after injections and slept on me all night. I was fine with that as it meant I could keep a close eye on her. If in the morning your babies temperature is still high, then try and book an emergency appointment. Are they still feeding? I found breast feeding was a great comfort through injections.

BlackberryandNettle · 23/01/2018 21:26

I think although the advice for nurofen is not at his age (too young) under advice of a doctor you could give a dose. This was def the case with a friend of mine. They called an ambulance and the paramedics stayed with them until temperature came down (temp of 39.5)

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2018 21:27

My eldest is 10. They've specifically advised AGAINST cold flannels and similar as long as she's been alive.

NHS fever advice is here: beta.nhs.uk/symptoms/fever-in-children/

Pay close attention to the advice in the red box.

"Call 999 or go to A&E if your child:
Is under 3 months old with a temperature of 38C or higher or you think they have a fever
Has a fever you can’t control"

janeylacey · 23/01/2018 21:27

Feeding fine, slightly less frequent wet nappies - hasn't had one for 2 hours, which is unusual.

Spoke to OOH Dr an hour ago, just after administering 3rd dose of calpol. Was under the impression that they could only have calpol at this age?

Yes, had the jab that causes a fever but didn't think it should be this high, especially after calpol.

Firstly, don’t panic! At least you know what’s caused the temp, now you just have to ride it out. Make sure your baby is dressed in light clothing. Don’t use cold flannels - people used to but it’s now against medical advice. Offer plenty of milk (breast or formula) - they may only take in little and often. You can’t give nurofen at that age - stick with the calpol. By tomorrow the temp will have started to normalise.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 23/01/2018 21:28

Agree with stripping baby down to nappy and lying on your bare chest. Your own temp will compensate, and it'll help cool him down. It really really works.
