To ask you how to clean Ewan!

DD has a Ewan the dream sheep. It's a god send and helps her drift off to sleep at night time and daytime naps.

She particularly likes to suck on its ears Hmmwhich means that he now absolutely stinks to high heaven.

Has anyone managed to successfully clean one? I've tried hand washing his face and ears but it took all day to dry and didn't last longer than the first night.

I don't really want to buy a new one as the same thing will happen to that one too I imagine.

Any advice is appreciated!

Also posted in sleep but got no replies so posting here for traffic.

Not sure exactly what Ewan is made of, but I recently washed some soft toys inside a pillow case on a low temp and low spin wash in my washing machine. They came out beautifully!

FuzzyCustard · 22/01/2018 17:33

Everything goes in the washing machine in this house. I have no idea of Ewan's composition but I bet he'll be ok.

mustbemad17 · 22/01/2018 17:38

Ewan is a bastard to clean i'm afraid! I even emailed them to find out because DD used to suck his tail. They basically said sponge wash because of the electrics.
DD's is now a dog toy (she's 5 & found it funny that the dog hijacked it) so he now lives in the garden looking even grubbier

AllTheGoodOnesAreUnavailable · 22/01/2018 17:39

I don't think I can put it in the machine, it has a light inside it and it makes sounds so has electronics on the inside that I can't take out Confused

Ewanthedreamsheep · 22/01/2018 17:41

Please don't put me in the washing machine!

AllTheGoodOnesAreUnavailable · 22/01/2018 17:41

Mustbe that's what I feared. I really wish an animal would hijack DDs. It smells like death Blush

In a fit of stubbornness I unpicked him, took out his electrics and re sewed him afterwards. Never again...

AllTheGoodOnesAreUnavailable · 22/01/2018 17:43

Flavia did it work though??

Ewan Grin

mustbemad17 · 22/01/2018 17:43

I have to admit i was relieved 🙈 Would he be a candidate for dry cleaning? Not sure as never had anything dry cleaned but might protect his electrics?

I'll send you the dog if you want 😬

mustbemad17 · 22/01/2018 17:44

OP you can buy electricless (so not a word) Ewan's, would that be an option? Then just use the sound in the background

lookingforthecorkscrew · 22/01/2018 17:45

Bloody good question OP! I just found DS’s old Ewan and was contemplating washing it for DC due in June. Think I might buy it a new one though!!

GummyGoddess · 22/01/2018 17:46

Would she accept one of the cuddly versions or does it have to be the actual Ewan?

AllTheGoodOnesAreUnavailable · 22/01/2018 17:47

I could try the teddy one and see if she knows.
She does like to turn it on herself and got upset when the batteries ran out so I'm not sure it'll work.

Bloody thing!!!

OP posts:
FlaviaAlbia · 22/01/2018 17:47

Well, he still looked a bit grubby but I think that was the type of fleece mainly, he smelt fresh though.

AllTheGoodOnesAreUnavailable · 22/01/2018 17:51

Was it okay to put back together again? I don't really mind him looking dirty, it's the smell.
I hate the thought of it close to her face all night smelling so bad!

The only thing that worked for us (same sucking issues) was a hand surface wash with dettol. Cleaned it great, took ages to dry on a cold night but it did work and because of the taste the wee one stopped chewing it. We did get the soft toy one too and that's easy to wash in a underwear bag at low with some antibacterial wash.

You cannot put Ewan in the wash or in a dry cleaner as it will cause major issues.

pastabest · 22/01/2018 17:52

Not actually tried but I bet you could give him a light shampoo and then dry on a radiator if you didn't get him too damp.

Alternatively what about sofa/ulpholstery cleaner?

TiffTaffTop · 22/01/2018 17:53

Wrap his body in a towel with a plastic bag / cling film on for good measure. Then lay on the draining board, hanging his head over the sink- wash very carefully with warm soapy water and a nail brush. Don't saturate it.

Then for it's body, wring out a flannel so it's not dripping at all and firmly scrub with the warm soapy water but again do not saturate.

Leave to dry on radiator or air dry outside.

If there's any remaining smell, dust with bicarbonate of soda, and bash it vigorously outside. Use a dry towel to rub off any residue before giving it back.

Febreze (if you can stand the smell) is also an option but won't clean it, just mask the smell.

InsomniacAnonymous · 22/01/2018 18:03

"Febreze (if you can stand the smell) is also an option but won't clean it, just mask the smell."

I wouldn't put Febreze on it as she sucks it.

AllTheGoodOnesAreUnavailable · 22/01/2018 18:04

I'm going to have another go at hand washing his face tomorrow. Last time I used washing powder and it didn't do the job so tomorrow I'm going to try and Dettol it.
Won't poison her if she manages to suck some out though will it?!

Love2cook · 22/01/2018 18:12

If you put him in the freezer it should kill the bacteria and the smell. It needs to be about 4 days though so may not be a option. Take the batteries out first.

Nanny0gg · 22/01/2018 18:15

We learnt the hard way that he doesn't go in a machine... Sad

category12 · 22/01/2018 18:16

Major surgery for Ewan? Cut him open, remove electrics, wash and put back in & sew him up again?

BlackeyedSusan · 22/01/2018 18:19

or milton for sterilising bottles etc. should be all right to suck once dry.

frippit · 22/01/2018 18:20

My granddaughter loves Ewan, she is three now. He got so manky, that about a year ago, my daughter removed all his electronic innards and he now regularly goes in the washing machine and tumble drier.
Granddaughter wasn't bothered and still loves him to bits.
