AIBU to be annoyed by this?

So I live on a busy road, it’s always been busy and I accepted that when I moved her, but lately it’s getting busier.

With the building of the world’s worst planned bypass my road has basically become a motorway with lorries passing at all time of the day and night.

This is annoying enough and there’s nothing I can do about it, but it adds to my annoyance of this:

Every morning at 7.50 and evening at 5.27 there’s a shitty little motorbike with the world’s loudest engine. It wakes up DD (5months) every morning and it just makes me so angry.

I called the police and they said it was nothing to do with them and in fact went as far to explain all the other hinges that were more important to them (than a speeding, loud motorbike, roaring round the corner every morning and evening when school kids are being picked up/dropped off for the coaches). They said my local bobby would call me but I never heard anything.

I’ve tried to contact environmental health but you can only do that through a website form, and I can’t give any info cause the number is illegally displayed and not visible (my DH tries to see it most mornings).

It’s driving me insane, any ideas?? I’m not usually petty but this is really getting my goat.

There is a legal limit for motorbike engine noise I think, well there definitely used to be so I don't understand why everyone seems to be so affronted about this. If it is above the legal limit then the police should deal with it.

ineedwine99 · 22/01/2018 14:19

You have my sympathy OP but there's nothing you can do. We have a guy over the field from us who every Saturday and Sunday in spring/summer gets whatever car he has out of the garage about 7am and revs the engine, for about an hour, can only assume its old or he's fixing it up. Also have a shitty scooter thing goes past every night at about 10pm that you can hear long before you see it. Thankfully my daughter can sleep through anything (thankfully as we regularly have RAF jets flying overhead)
Sorry OP, white noise for baby?

InsomniacAnonymous · 22/01/2018 14:29

Well I already thought you were VU for starting your post with "So". By the time I'd read the whole post I was in agreement with your own diagnosis of yourself "It’s driving me insane". Insane is definitely the word. I can't believe you phoned the police.

He also speeds round the corner where as I said, children are getting dropped off for the busses for school.

Shouldn't the buses move to somewhere safer? Surely dropping off/picking up is unsafe on a corner.

EggsonHeads · 22/01/2018 14:37

I don't think YABU to be annoyed. People should be more co siderate when choosing transport. If he can't afford something doesn't sound like it's going to explode he should ride a bicycle. Not sure why you bothered calling the police though. Being a dick isn't illegal.

Today 14:17 grannytomine

Well I'm peeved not because op contacted the police but as I stated earlier, was because op seemed to think the police should deal with this bike before anything else, and they hadn't got better things to do.

But as you mention the laws "UK implements stage one of EU directive 87/56 and reduces maximum noise limit to 82 decibels.18 Feb 2012"
Here is a comparison of levels

City Traffic, inside the car 85 dB
Bulldozer 88 dB
Jazz Concert 91 dB
Power Mower 94 dB
Nightclub 97 dB
Ambulance Siren, inside driver window down 100 dB
Rock Concert, Leaf Blower 110db

Unless the motorbike is louder than a bulldozer it's not breaking the law

I can't get past the fact that your 5 month old gets woken at 07.50!!! You're so lucky! Mine was up at 5am at that age!

malmi · 22/01/2018 19:40

Stand outside and get the reg plate of the bike. Check whether it's taxed etc online. Pop along to police office and give them the details, mentioning the dangerous speed and suspiciously loud exhaust. They may not be willing to camp out on the roadside but if they can trace the keeper's details they may agree to pay a home visit to have a word about speed and to check all is in order with the bike.

ILoveDolly · 22/01/2018 19:48

It does sound annoying but you have basically got two choices:

move house
Invest in better sound proofing

I don't mean to sound harsh as I used to live in a flat opposite a coach stop and am well aware how crap it is constantly hearing noisy vehicles. However, that is the situation and the police will not be able to help.

Bluelady · 22/01/2018 19:54

I think we might live on the same street. I swear at the rider of mine and then get on with my day.

Birdsgottafly · 22/01/2018 20:04

Are you sleep deprived, or just coming out of sleep deprivation? Under those circumstances I could understand your angst.

It won't be long before your DD isn't sleeping at those times.

ifIwasinvisiblewaitIalreadyam · 22/01/2018 21:34

This all sounds very Victor Meldrew.....7:50 for a 5 month old is a reasonable time to be awake......and no need to call the police 🤨

Psychobabble123 · 23/01/2018 18:35

I'm sorry, I'm just absolutely gobsmacked you called the Police over this! 😂😂😂

Greyponcho · 23/01/2018 18:41

Why people intentionally make their vehicles louder is beyond me! So utterly selfish!
Maybe the rider can’t afford to get the hole in their exhaust fixed?

Moregilmoregirls · 23/01/2018 18:43

Yabu my neighbour goes to work at 4.30am and his loud truck starting up wakes me every morning (yes I wear ear plugs). I've certainly never called the police!!!!

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 23/01/2018 20:35

7.50 isn’t unreasonable but if my daughter is asleep it is to me!

The earth revolves around the sun. Not around your DD.

stopbeingadramallama · 23/01/2018 21:15

nocoolnamesleft · 23/01/2018 21:28

Anyone else wondering how this residential road has been widened to 3 lanes in either direction (plus possibly hard shoulders, and definitely central reservation), without knocking down the OP's house? Must have been very long front gardens originally. I grant the 70 mph limit must be scary for the kids going to school. Though they'll have had to put in a footbridge, as no pedestrians on motorways.

(Possibly OP means not really at all like a motorway)

ThePinkOcelot · 23/01/2018 21:56

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when you hung up the phone to the police.

Guavaf1sh · 23/01/2018 22:15

You are being hilariously unreasonable
