To not want my kids to play in the " smoking room "

We have recently moved closer my mil, she's normally lovely and we get along great, I am respectful and polite with her. She has a large house with a games room with all the board games, kids toys dvds and TV. This is usually where our kids hang out. When her daughter comes to stay she smokers in this room. I don't want my kids to play in this room when she's been smoking there all day, even after a half an hour airing because I still think it's smoky and harmful for them. The house is big, there is plenty of places to play. Mil thinks I'm being silly. Aibu?

Yabu, how is it harmful if the room has been aired and she's not smoking in there whilst they're in there? Sounds a bit precious.

mando12345 · 21/01/2018 18:27

YANBU I wouldn't like that either, not in the circumstances you describe.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 21/01/2018 18:27

Why doesn’t she just smoke outside? Confused

YANBU my DC visit family who smoke but not indoors. Yet my DC still come back with the smell on them.

MummyNessi · 21/01/2018 18:28

That's what I thought, I don't get why they think it's ok for kids to spend time in the smoking room 🙁

Agree with kssme, the smell may be unpleasant but it's harmless.

TheQueenOfWands · 21/01/2018 18:29

Sensible.

These toys and games will be covered in nicotine. Definitely not safe to play with.

We've all seen the light switches in a smoker's house. That yellow shit will be all over your children.

Keep them away.

MummyNessi · 21/01/2018 18:30

As far as I've read harmful chemical stay in the room longer than half an hour..?

thethoughtfox · 21/01/2018 18:31

That is the most insane use of a room: smoking and children's play area.

MummyNessi · 21/01/2018 18:33

I know! Smoking/ playroom!?!? Wtf?

I can’t abide smoking and dislike anywhere that reeks of stale smoke. I consciously avoid people who smoke. I wouldn’t want my children coming out smelling like an ashtray.
I think it would depend how often she smokes in there. Why is she even allowed to smoke in her parents house? If it’s twice a year, a decent spell of open windows would clear the worst effects but much more and all the toys and games will reek. Can’t your MIL ask her to smoke outside or to forego her addiction for a couple of hours?

ObiJuanKenobi · 21/01/2018 18:34

I don't know how true it is or if it's proven but I think the problem is known as 'third hand smoke'.

To not want my kids to play in the " smoking room "
ObiJuanKenobi · 21/01/2018 18:34

I wouldn't let my children play in there either way. It's disgusting and anyone who permits smoking in their home shouldn't be surprised if people don't want to visit Envy

DarthArts · 21/01/2018 18:35

I guess it depends to a degree on how often her daughter visits and how heavily she smokes.

If she's there once a month and isn't a heavy smoker then the rooms not going to get saturated by her smoking one of two fags in there periodically.

That said - I wouldn't want my kids playing there half an hour afterwards even if the rooms been aired.

If she is a daily visitor smoking a pack a day then no I wouldn't like it.

badass80 · 21/01/2018 18:35

I think YANBU. I would be concerned.

What about all the lingering toxic chemicals.

Disgusting and harmful.

Jacobismyboy · 21/01/2018 18:36

I'm so disappointed...i thought you had a cluedo style mansion with a billiards room and a breakfast room etc.
I think I've been watching too much Downton

shakeyourcaboose · 21/01/2018 18:37

Look up 3rd hand smoking to booster your argument. As pp say nicotine lingers.

Trills · 21/01/2018 18:37

Sounds massively over the top to me but ¯\(ツ)

YADNBU. If the smell is still there so are the toxins. I’m surprised so many people don’t understand this.
People can get lung cancer or lung damage from second hand smoke.

Mumsymcmumface · 21/01/2018 18:54

If this is a health risk to the children then my entire generation will be dead soon.

  1. Dad smoked all day everyday at home, and we went to watch him play snooker in the evenings where everyone smoked.

Both sets of grandparents both smoked in their houses when we visited.

The car would often be three people smoking and me in the boot.

ObiJuanKenobi · 21/01/2018 18:56

Even if it's not harmful it's bloody unpleasant

MummyNessi · 21/01/2018 18:56

I don't know... my mil doesn't smoke my s'il does and my husband does. My husband never smokes inside. Sil only visits a few times a year for about a week at a time but will always smoke indoors...

OP posts:
MummyNessi · 21/01/2018 18:58

Mumsy...
but how do you know that has not caused a lot of cancer in that generation?

You joke but actually that’s why smoking inside and in cars has been banned. A fair amount of our generation will die as a result of second hand smoke. It’s not actually a joke.
