I probably am. But I'm telling anyway.

I went to a very small country town today (we're in Oz) and there was a little "Op Shop" as they're called here.

It wasn't a charity shop though, more a junk shop.

I found TWO 1920s lampshades...for FIVE dollars each
1 beautiful vintage 70s dress in the most gorgeous fine velvet which seems like it was made to measure for me TEN dollars
5 stunning vintage 50s birthday cards still in packets with envelopes and complete with glitter 25cents each
1 china tea caddy, 1930s with a lovely trellis pattern ONE dollar

Bugger me, I'm happy....I must return.

I'm not a dealer but I NEEDED those lampshades. Our house is 1920s and I've been longing for some original shades! Too expensive in antique shops though.

Envy at your lampshades! I love a good charity shop find. I did get a DVF wrap top for £3.99 reduced from £6.99 last week. I think they sell for £70-ish new. And I once got a Whistles silk dress with the tags on for £6.99.

notsohippychick · 21/01/2018 13:28

Oooh theees nothing better than a fabulous charity shop haul!!! I love it!!

Sounds like you’ve bagged yourself some bargains there!!!!

reallyreallyreallytired · 21/01/2018 13:28

Lovely!! Enjoy your finds 😊

redexpat · 21/01/2018 13:29

Ooh I love it when that happens! Can we see a photo of the dress? Smile

Moltenpink · 21/01/2018 13:29

All sounds lovely! Any chance of a picture? I love a good find, my favourite items in my wardrobe are charity bargains, black trousers that were £1 and a velvet blazer for £5!

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 21/01/2018 13:30

I felt guilty so didn't buy ALL the vintage cards...leave some for others!

I did see two boxed, unused china dinner services...not good quality ones but nice! They were 70s I think and because I was so overwhelmed at my finds I didn't bloody look properly.

I've got to get DH to drive down there next weekend.

I've heard tell of similar shops in the area but we almost ran out of petrol and had to rush to get to the garage before it shut!

I have a crappy phone and it's not even linked to my MN account.

I'll try to find something that looks like my dress.

I'm an avid charity shopper and have had some great bargains. Today am wearing my almost full length black wool coat, which looks very smart and makes me feel confident (and swishy). Cost £8.50 i a charity shop.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 21/01/2018 13:34

I can't see anything remotely as nice...mine is fitted and then a line....it fits in round the waist and has long sleeves. It's a beautiful green colour with a very subtle botanical leafy print.

The shades are like this

Mine are most like the bottom left two

I got some lovely knitting patterns recently when someone had a clear out. I cheerfully bought the lot. One of the knitting pattern books has a very young Joanna Lumley as one of the models.

00100001 · 21/01/2018 13:41

Oooh, I love a charity shop bargain

I got brand new Next Jeans for £2.50, labels still on.

Mint Velvet dress for £3.99

White stuff top for £1.20

Super dry jacket for DS14 for £4

BikeRunSki · 21/01/2018 13:43

I live a good charity shop. Slightly lower key to 1920s house fittings, but last week I got

  • the last 2 Wimpy Kid books that DS hadn’t read
  • Risk
  • Boggle
  • a pair of salopettes for dd (we’re not going skiing but always useful to have outdoor clothes).

All for £2.50!!!!

CoolCarrie · 21/01/2018 13:46

Excellent finds Spam, well done, lovely lamps.

keepingbees · 21/01/2018 13:53

I love hearing about what other people have found Grin
I'm a charity shopper and find lots of bargains, never anything valuable (I wouldn't know what I was looking for anyway) but my kids wardrobes are stuffed with lovely branded clothes that cost me pence.

UpstartCrow · 21/01/2018 13:59

I also got a Globe teapot and a set of 4 vintage shot glasses for £2.

frasier · 21/01/2018 14:12

I LOVED the op shops in Australia (think it's short for "opportunity").

One man's trash is another mans treasure and all that.

FlouncyDoves · 21/01/2018 14:18

A relative of mine got a first edition paperback copy of the first Harry Potter book. It was something like any 5 books for a £1. So cost 20p.

It’s worth roughly £700 last time they looked.

Cindie943811A · 21/01/2018 14:23

Called Opportunity shops in NZ, too. However generally speaking better bargains in U.K. charity shops. I think this is because houses here are smaller than your average Australasian home and folk are less likely to hang onto stuff they aren’t using.
I love doing the charity shops and find lots of new or barely used craft materials that are expensive new eg glass paints. Sadly I don’t have room for much of the larger stuff I see and desire. Very sad I have to relinquish a vintage Canterbury that I absolutely love, sigh, and will have to recycle to a charity shop.

DollyPartonsBeard · 21/01/2018 14:23

I got some unworn Rocket Dog boots for six quid on Friday (I'd been eyeing them up online for ages) and Wrap London cardi for £3.50!

thecraftyfox · 21/01/2018 14:48

I got a full Poole pottery vintage 8 place setting dinner service with coffee pots, tureens, three sizes of plates and gravy boat for £40 .

DingDongDenny · 21/01/2018 14:48

I once got an unworn pair of Fly London shoes

numbereightyone · 21/01/2018 14:50

I bought a beautiful dinner service for £20. I love using it.

WitchIwasaWitch18 · 21/01/2018 14:53

I got a lovely glass dining table and set of chairs for £35 the lot. Am member of a non-consumer group on FB so target is for most purchased things to be 2nd hand or hand made.

AnotherGreenDot · 21/01/2018 14:54

Love a charity shop! Some recent finds:
2 paperbacks I’ve been wanting to read for ages, £1 each.
Lovely hat, £2
Set of red 1960s wine glasses, £1.50
1970s white crinkly sundress, £2
1950s tiered cake stand, £3 (never see these anymore - this was 10 years ago before they became fashionable)

elephantoverthehill · 21/01/2018 15:01

I am feeling very smug. Yesterday I bought two pairs of unworn Clark's boots, one pair brown and knee length the other black ankle boots and a new Gigi handbag all for under £20. Dd is just putting up the hems on a very slinky jumpsuit we bought for a £1 and she also found some funky wellies for 50p. It felt like we has done the sales at Harvey Nicks Grin.
