Inspired by the earlier thread on places you've been underwhelmed by, I want to travel more and hoping to see the nordics and more of Asia soon, so inspire me with places you've loved please!

I'll go - Sicily, Taormina - stayed in a beautiful but modernised 18th century hotel with an infinity pool over looking the bay, the streets were full of bussle, beautiful architecture, food was ok, but most enjoyed just out drinking on the stepped bar in the middle of the town with free nibbles, in the beautiful warm summers evenings. Never bothered with the stoney beach. Local wine was amazing. Just loved it all.

Rejkiavic - loved the blue lagoon!

LA Santa Monica, love the sun shine, chilled vibe, beautiful beaches (homelessness was upsetting). amazing restaurants and food on abbey kinney (Venice).

Bali, loved the people, food, scenery, amazing and cheap as chips villa rental for pure luxury, hated the long flight.

Inspire me!

Loved

A few years ago we travelled around Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, and up the Norwegian coast. It was an amazing experience and so many beautiful places. I just loved it!

And I lived in New Zealand (Auckland) for a few years so have always had a soft spot for it and want to go back.

Cocoloco75 · 21/01/2018 01:28

New York City, the hustle and bustle, shops, food, the incredible tall buildings and amazing Central Park, a real sanctuary right in the middle of the madness.

Washington DC, the White House tour was pretty cool, Lincoln Memorial and reflecting pool, the Vietnam memorial wall was unlike anything I have ever seen, such an atmosphere, that and the Korean memorial.

Montreal, skiing/tubing/sledging/skating on Mount Royal in the city. Underground shopping malls (genius in winter).....and poutine!!!

Boston, lovely architecture and very friendly walkable city, lovely views from top of John Hancock building.

Amsterdam, I just love the look of the place, the canals and bikes and buildings are postcard perfect and then outside the city the fields of tulips and windmills, just beautiful.

To name a few.

Ireland 🇮🇪 my mother land
Such a beautiful country full of beautiful people and places.
I really hope one day I will see her free from British occupation

Italy 🇮🇹 another amazingly beautiful country, full of beautiful stylish people and historically fascinating places. I've been to Naples, Venice and Rome. Even had an audience with papa Francisco! A truly amazing and emotional experience. I want to see more of Italy, and eat more of the fucking amazing food!

TinDogTavern · 21/01/2018 01:39

NYC - it has everything
Amsterdam - handsome, friendly, easy to explore on foot/bike/boat. Loved it.
West Wales coast - breathtakingly beautiful. Unrivalled walking on the Wales Coast Path.
Zagreb - fascinating, beautiful but not in a touristy way, and not crowded so exploring is lovely.

London. I’m not from the UK and but I lived there for a year and totally fell in love with the city. I don’t even know why, exactly, it just makes me happy.

I loved Venice as well. I was looking forward to going and everyone who I talked to before I went told me how awful it was. I don’t know what they were talking about because it was everything I’d hoped it would be.

Romania. No particular cities, we travelled around a lot. I think it helped I was with a local because the language makes things hard but the beauty and the kindness of people blew me away.

paperdreams16 · 21/01/2018 01:52

Siem Reap in Cambodia, for Angkor Wat of course but also the friendliest people I have ever met. Just loved the whole atmosphere.

Hoi An in Vietnam, the ancient town is wonderful.

Edinburgh, for its sense of history, the stunning buildings, the people!

New York City, I’ve been a few times and every time is like the first. There’s nowhere like it and it’s truly my favourite place in the world.

Skowvegas · 21/01/2018 01:56

Loads of places but the surprising one was Venice. Everyone described it as crowded smelly hot etc. I expected to hate it.

I absolutely adored it.

LinoleumBlownapart · 21/01/2018 01:56

The Yorkshire Dales, real countryside, likewise the Dorset coast. Breathtaking.
I loved Utah, the mountains, the people, the things to do and the lack of touristy gimmicks made it a great place.
I love Rio de Janeiro, if it sorted out its problems, it would be an amazing city. A city, beaches, mountains and forest all in one. That covers most people's tastes. Likewise I loved Petropolis in Rio State. An amazing city tucked away in the Rio mountains.

I love Paris, especially the Eiffel Tower, it has a fantastic view.
Love Austria, all that I saw. New York is really alive. Iran-Tehran, the nicest people I have ever met and the best food in the world.

SilverBirchTree · 21/01/2018 02:07

Vietnam, just amazing

Paris, magical

Dubrovnik, stunning

Australia’s Northern Territory, unmissable

SealSong · 21/01/2018 02:14

Kerala, the backwaters, just wonderful. And the blue mountains.
Granada, Spain. Love it.
West coast of Ireland, Mayo in particular. Stunning.
Outer Hebrides - each island different, nowhere else like it.
Cuba - the history, the music, the scenery and the amazing diving.

FixItUpChappie · 21/01/2018 02:23

Edinburgh (I'm not from the UK Grin) - oozing with atmosphere straight out of a novel

The cave systems in Slovenia - Skocjan, Postojna - like nothing from home

Velika Planina Slovenia - fresh mountain air and oodles of charm

Chios and Lesvos in Greece - off the tourist track (at the time), stunning, old world

Mesta outside of Sparta - think hanging mist, mountains, lush green, ancient

Lokrum Island off Dubrovnik - lush cool shade from the hot sun, peacocks running rampant, gorgeous day out.

SuperBeagle · 21/01/2018 02:40

Queenstown, NZ (Wanaka lovely too, but Queenstown is exceptional).

Only place I would live outside of Australia.

UrgentScurryfunge · 21/01/2018 04:13

Mongolia. The owner of the hostel was astonished to have a repeat guest after a couple of years. It's so vast and open with such a distinctive culture once out of Ulan Bataar.

Iceland. Went around the island for two weeks. Similar to Mongolia in the raw open landscape kind of way.

Tibet. I'd love it to be independent and free to fully express its culture without censorship. Sadly I can't see that happening. Watching the sun rise over Mt Everest from the base camp was one of the highlights of my life.

Nepal was so vibrant, especially after spending much of the previous 2 months in China. It has the best aspects of India, but a more relaxed pace. I found north India very intense and it took a while to adjust and be able to enjoy it. South India was more relaxed.

Cornwall. It's our repeat place to visit for family holidays. The better end of British weather. Lots of variety meaning you can do a different combination of things each time. Beautiful coastal scenery. (Shame about the M5 to get there Grin)

Doobigetta · 21/01/2018 04:24

Lots of places listed on the other thread!
Florence, Venice, San Gimignano- so beautiful and packed with history
Barbados- gorgeous beaches, and felt really accessible and friendly and safe
Fira on Santorini- like a little fairytale town
The Maldives- paradise with baby sharks

Bumshkawahwah · 21/01/2018 04:25

Luang Prabang in Laos. Just amazing and unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been.

Yangshuo in China - stunning scenery

Hoi An in Vietnam. I lived in Vietnam for number of years and this is my favorite place in the entire country.

Hong Kong. So vibrant and buzzy, but then you can take a ferry to one of the many islands that feel like going back in time.

Bohol, Philippines. Beautiful, quiet island, with the chocolate Hills.

I lived in Asia for almost a decade...clearly, I miss it.
