To believe “wind the bobbin up” is inappropriate and to ask my child’s Nursery not to sing it.

Wind the bobbin up originated in the cotton mill towns of the north of England in Victorian times. As anyone who knows a bit about a bit history can tell you, the cotton mills were horrendous places which horrifically exploited women and children, forcing them to do dangerous work in appalling conditions for little pay.

How can it be right to trivialise these horrors by getting children to sing a light-hearted ditty about it... It’s offensive to the memory of all those who suffered these horrendous conditions and experienced serious injury or even death as a result of hideously exploitative working practices.

Was it "Singing Together"? Sea shanties, WW2 songs, folk music, a different theme each term

SpringBlossom2018 · 21/01/2018 00:27

LipstickHandbagCoffee I think SilverOnToast could be referring to this.

I am a nursery nurse. A lot of nursery rhymes are pretty dark. Think, 'Atishoo atishoo we all fall down'
I survived it, so did you.

Me and my colleague planned an activity for our 3 and 4 year olds the other day that included singing '3 blind mice.' We were in two minds whether to sing it or not but decided to in the end, the children thought it was hilarious, no harm done.

We do ba ba black sheep, and ba ba pink sheep because it's fun and the children love it. The amount of visitors and students we have that come in and act fake shocked and say 'are you not allowed to sing ba ba black sheep anymore!' Honestly makes me eye roll. Of course we do ba ba black sheep!!!

People need to get out abit more I think!

notangelinajolie · 21/01/2018 00:35

Seriously? Have you not got more things to worry about? My grandma and all her sisters moved up north to work in the Lancashire cotton mills and guess what? Their lives weren't hell and they all survived to tell the tale.

What would you like the little ones to sing?

bustedknee · 21/01/2018 00:43

Being a bobbin is a protected characteristic and NOBODY should wind them up!!

halfwitpicker · 21/01/2018 01:49

Pretty sure incy, wincy, spider was about the struggle of the black movement.

Jack and Jill involved both kids being killed.

Ring a ring a roses is about the plague

Way better than the wheels on the bus
I think the wheels may have something to say about that. They do have feelings you know. Wink

Just looked up knickknack paddywack. It’s about the potato famine and how people would hit and chase away Irish people, who came over to mainland Britain trying to sell pots and pans. Brits would hit and chase them away while happily giving their own dogs a bone. Shock

This thread has really opened my eyes to how few people read the whole fucking thread. I admit I have been guilty of this in the past, but I always read the OP’s updates, which tend to inform me if the thread has, you know, moved on. (For those twats who didn’t read the thread and are still saying “OMG, you are a special snowflake... why ban that and not xyz?” You can highlight the OP’s messages to make it easier to follow....Although I doubt you will read this either)

LolitaLempicka · 21/01/2018 06:53

And to all those who did read the thread, some of your posts have been just brilliant!

Helmetbymidnight · 21/01/2018 07:06

Lolita, these posters are FAR too important to read the thread before jumping in.

MaisyPops · 21/01/2018 07:26

I'll be honest, I didn't even get the reference to the concentration camp thread until the OP came back and updated us. Blush

So prior to ger update gave a slightly sarcastic reply about red riding hood. Grin

Sweetpea55 · 21/01/2018 07:52

Dont be a twat. The kids have no idea where the rhyme originated from and wouldnt understand if you told them.
Kids love rhymes with actions,,
And you want the nursery to stop using it on your say so..
Your an idiot

Helmetbymidnight · 21/01/2018 08:02

Aw, sweetpea is in such a rush to insult the op that she didnt realise op admitted it was 'a wind up' ages ago. (Yesterday)

Who looks an idiot now?
