There's a ghost in my house .....

I have never believed in ghosts, however some background – I live in an old woollen mill that has been converted into 35 apartments and have been here 10 years. There is evidence in the local churchyard of mill workers who died at work and it was attacked by the Luddites. The My DD and GD used to live in another apartment and one morning all 4 taps in the bathroom were on full (GD was in a cot and not capable of getting out), there was no explanation, the taps were fully working and turned off as normal. When GD was nearly 3 she woke my DD one night with her crying, when DD went to her she said “I don't like Tom, tell him to go away”. DD said “Tom, GD doesn't want you here please go”. Nothing happened again.

Other residents have moved out because unexplainable things have happened.

Last night before I went to bed I took my glasses off and left them on top of a cabinet in the lounge as I do every night, I also plugged my phone into the charger again I do this every night.

This morning when I got up and came into the lounge I picked up my glasses, one of the lenses had fallen out and the screw that holds the lens in was on the floor. When I picked up my phone it hadn't charged and the connector that goes into the phone was bent at 90 degrees. There is only DH and I here and I was last to bed and first up.

Has a ghost decided to come and live here?

I've had a few weird things happen in my early 1900's terraced house.

The kettle would be warm when I returned from work, doors would be open when left shut, things didn't seem to be where I'd left them. Only the kettle made me think something was going on. I could excuse the other things. I had a stack of mail ready for the man who used to live here. It disappeared but I thought maybe I'd send them on and forgot.

After we got the front door replaced (new lock) we've had no more hot kettle incidents - but the kettle has been replaced twice so it could have been faulty. I don't feel like someones been here when I return any longer.

Recently we've had the thermostat being turned down or turned high - but this could have been accidentally altered when someone went downstairs. The boiler cupboard doors keep being left open (wind?) and taps are left on (child?). We've had a weird thing with some of the lights too - but the electrics are very old.

Every now and then I think 'ghost' then I think more rationally.

ObscuredbyFog · 20/01/2018 20:38

pammy go into the loft and make sure either
a) there's no-one living up there
or b) no-one can get access to your place via shared lofts, check the wall in the loft between you and next door.

Put bolts on your loft hatch so no-one can access your house from it and THEN if you come in and the kettle's still warm, I'll believe you have a ghost Smile

ObscuredbyFog · 20/01/2018 20:40

Make that not the kettle, but the boiler doors, stat and taps etc.

paranoidpammywhammy2 · 20/01/2018 21:52

ObscuredbyFog I've actually already done that! That was one of my first thoughts.

There are reasons why I'm paranoid

I believe (but can't prove) it was the last resident (who's alive) that was illegally popping in to pick up his mail/use toilet/get a drink. Something slightly similar happened with one of my relatives.

Fannyfanakerpants · 20/01/2018 22:04

I watched a ghost stories programme where someone walked up a staircase in a hotel. As they were walking up, someone passed them going down, and said "Do you think this place is haunted?" And then disappeared!
I think that's genious of a ghost and definetly what I'd do.

MargotMoon · 20/01/2018 22:15

Anybody else hear this when they read the title of this thread...?

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 20/01/2018 22:25

I don't believe in ghosts either but if they do exist and I came back as one, I'd be the kind that sat at the end of your bed and convinced you that everything was going to be OK.

beany5 · 20/01/2018 22:43

My house has ghosts but they seem nice enough and we don't bother each other anymore. When I moved here I brought my old trusty alarm clock with me and plugged it in. It worked perfectly in my old house but here it started going of most nights at midnight. I decided to replace it with a new different alarm and the same thing happened again. Whenever there was a special significant date my alarm would go off at midnight. I unplugged it and threw it in the cupboard and now rely on my phone to wake me instead. One night I was in bed laying on my front reading and I heard what I thought was my husband's footsteps come into my room, walk up to the bed and then I felt him sitting next to me on the bed. I continued reading to finish the sentence and then turned round to speak to my husband but there was no one there. I used to feel someone sitting on the bed quite often but it doesn't seem to happen much anymore. I have also caught site of someone regularly out the side of my eye and almost jumped with fright but when I look properly there's no one there. I could write a book about the goings on here.

thegreatbeyond · 20/01/2018 23:11

Pammy, that doesn't seem weird so much as the man who used to live there letting himself in!

juneybean · 20/01/2018 23:14

I've heard they need energy to make themselves known so might explain why your phone didn't charge, it was a bit dick-ish of them to bend your connector as well though.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 20/01/2018 23:22

Ghosts are real. I didn’t used to believe until my grandma died and she came to me in a dream just before she was found. My daughter randomly waves and says hello/goodbye at nothing when she’s at my mums house (my grandma loved my mums house).

NoKnownFather · 20/01/2018 23:55

When I bought my current house just over 5 yrs ago a neighbour told me the previous owner had sold and bought another house after the death of her DH. She had put tenants in the house for around 4-5 yrs before deciding to sell as she wasn't returning to this house. Nothing strange or weird and I didn't think anything more about it.

During the first year of living here and while watching TV at night, I would notice out-of-the-corner of my eye a movement near the bottom of the stairs and 'it' would come towards the loungeroom door and just stand there. At first there would be weeks between these appearances, then I started thinking about the previous owner's DH, made some further enquiries and it appears he died in the house before the ambulance arrived.

His 'several week' visits became more regular and were now 'every' night and I thought back to my childhood and ghost stories etc (and not really believing in ghosts etc) I decided to tell him that his DW had moved to another house and gave the new address, then talked calmly to him for a few minutes, as being alone meant nobody would hear me and think I had lost my marbles.

Anyway I had this one-sided conversation and lo and behold he hasn't been back. True story that I haven't told anyone because I doubt they would believe me....or would think I was losing my mind.

Going back many years, my DH used to work in a hospital and was informed by other staff that the ghost used to be on the stairs at night, so best to use the lift. One night during an emergency, he had to get to another floor very quickly and the lift was being used and not thinking about the ghost, he decided to use the stairs. He too, was a non-believer (as I am) and came home from work still pale and with the hairs on his arms and neck standing on end....the ghost had brushed passed his shoulder and apologised for bumping into him.

I knew DH would never lie about anything and after seeing the goosebumps and hair-on-end on his arms, I 'knew' he wasn't BSing. Also he had sleeping problems for several days when there was NO other reason for the insomnia. Meanwhile my house-ghost hasn't returned since I told him where his DW was now living, so yes wooo69, I now believe in ghosts and if you google about removal of ghosts, they usually say to do as I had already done...talk to them calmly and tell them where their missing family etc has gone.

....and for the non-believers I have NOT been drinking!

LEMtheoriginal · 21/01/2018 00:04

Is it just me that is more worried about the Op charging her phone overnight?

TitaniasCloset · 21/01/2018 00:34

NoKnown what did the ghost that brushed past your husband look like? How was he sure that's what it was?

RunningOutOfCharge · 21/01/2018 00:38

Yes LEM I thought that!

There's no such thing as ghosts either!

dentydown · 21/01/2018 00:39

I once had a random ghost in my house. He would wait behind a wall and step out causing me to jump. It looked like he found the whole thing funny.
I went through the back door to come in once. He was waiting for me. I coughed made him jump and he looked petrified! Then he faded away.

thegreatbeyond · 21/01/2018 01:28

As I was going up the stairs
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish that man would go away

Panda81 · 21/01/2018 03:33

I should not be reading this thread at 3am...Shock

Thank god I live in a new build

MerryShitmas · 21/01/2018 03:45

I have had quite a few paranormal experiences. Nobody has ever believed me though, Not without seeing it themselves too (I include my mother, sister and DH in that).

I'm not sure what extent I believe to though.
I still find myself questioning, how does it all work? Why do some people contact their relatives when they've passed but not others? Is it only bad spirits that stay? Are they even spirits or something else? I've never had a good experience really, aside from one relatively neutral experience.

I try my hardest to never have unflinching belief for anything...

NoKnownFather · 21/01/2018 03:47

TitaniasCloset, sorry was trying to keep it as short as possible. Other staff had already described the ghost when he started working there. Apparently she was a past patient from many years prior who had fallen on the stairs during the night and sadly passed away some days later from her injuries. She was late teen/early 20's, thin with long dark hair and wearing an ankle length nightie.

When she brushed his shoulder he called her name and assured her everything was OK, he was rushing due to the emergency and was sorry to have startled her....in fact, it was he who was startled and I will never forget the look on his face. Nothing ever shook him before, or after, this encounter but he was genuinely shaken.

Having worked in several hospitals and often on night shift, he was used to frequenting semi-dark stairs, lobbies, etc and nothing like this had occurred anywhere else.

Have you had anything similar? apparently ghosts are fairly common in hospitals.

NoKnownFather · 21/01/2018 03:56

MerryShitmas (love your name) until the two incidents I've written about I would never have believed them either, but the elderly man in my current house seems to have moved to his DW's new house as since that night I haven't seen him and he had been appearing on a very regular basis. He didn't do anything creepy or scary, just stood near the door and looked into the lounge room....this gave me the creeps as I wouldn't want a 'live' person standing there.

As to how it works? I don't know either, but when I did an internet search one item I read suggested that if someone dies in their home then their ghost remains, mostly without the family realising. When the sold has new residents the ghost is lost and walks around trying to find the family. Who knows if this happens? In saying that I don't believe everything I read online, but it sort of suited what happened in my house.

What's your story?

e1y1 · 21/01/2018 04:04

Sorry to spoil your sleep @Panda81. I live on a brand new street, only 4 house on it. It’s on the site of what used to be an elderly care home, to make it worse, my house backs right on to a grave yard and church.

I haven’t had any unnatural things occur touch wood, however, next door swears they have seen a ghost sat on their sofa, described it as an a whole man wearing an old style nurse/nun uniform, which given the church, old schoolhouse and cottage that our houses back on to....

e1y1 · 21/01/2018 04:06

*whole man? That should say a woman

Theresnonamesleft · 21/01/2018 04:19

I have one. Met him within days of moving in. Elderly man. It was weird really as although he didn’t talk or anything, I walked in one day and said Hi Sam. Weeks later chatting to neighbours and they spoke about Sam. That freaked me out a bit.

Over the years I’ve smelt his cigarettes and the occasional cigar. Aftershave. Heard him walking up and down the stairs and several other things. Not the only one either to hear and smell him. When I was going through
Something back when I was new here, he sat near me and comforted him. Found out later he was a nurse and retired early to look after his wife.

When I was a kid also met a relative after he had died. Sat in a chair he would sit in. We had a chat and he gave me messages to pass on, things that I couldn’t possibly know. Shit the adults right up.,

In another house. Saw a person as clear as anything stand in front of a window. That did shit me up. Never went back to that place. There was just something not nice and I didn’t feel safe. Weird to explain.

If I came back I would want to kick the man children into action and be productive grown ups at home. Like fuck would I be cleaning up, do enough of that as it is.

finnmcool · 21/01/2018 04:22

Are they ghosts'? Or just an imprint of the energy from a person?
It would be interesting to know if the ghosts' were vivacious people, full of energy.
