To say colleague is a cheeky fucker?

She booked an all inclusive to Spain a few weeks back.

She requested a half day (leave at 12pm), so she can get to the airport and depart. The rest of the week she's there, she already had booked off.

Today she's requested to speak to me. Turns out she is telling me she will be leaving at 12pm on Friday (the date of her holiday), because she says she is now pregnant and has her first MW appointment (the booking one).

Employees don't need evidence for their first Midwife appointment.

AIBU to think she's cheeky and she is leaving for the airport? Grin

Honest question here but why is she having a booking in appointment at a hospital?

Is that usual round your way? I've only ever had them at Drs. But maybe I'm lucky to only have community midwives

Sorry don't mean to derail just genuinely puzzled!

SayYouCare · 19/01/2018 21:04

aaaargh Yep, they're usually all at hospital (London based). All mine were Smile

hystericaluterus · 19/01/2018 21:05

That would be a pretty big lie to tell for the sake of one afternoon off.

Twickerhun · 19/01/2018 21:06

I’d tell her that it could be seen, by a more cyclical person, to be convenient that she needs the whole day off on a day that she has been refused leave. And that if you discover that there has been any lying or deception relating to he day off that will be a disciplinary after for investigation and that can of course lead to dismissal.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 19/01/2018 21:06

Ahh thanks! Sorry for the slight derail!

If the flights at three - would she have been able to make it without taking time off? Or is she relying on getting out of work early?

Twickerhun · 19/01/2018 21:07

Excuse typos.

SayYouCare · 19/01/2018 21:08

Twick Id be very careful saying something like that. Maternity discrimination is a big thing and hard to disprove.

aaarghh no worries, it's quite funny really! And the timing would be due to her already made plans with her family. Have a look at one of my PP (hope I don't sound rude, genuinely don't want to lol!)

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 19/01/2018 21:08

So if her flight is at 3 and the hospital is so far away, she'd miss the flight surely? Unless she has form for lying, I think you need to take her word for it. (Although I'd ask about the flight if the times don't add up!)

Itscurtainsforyou · 19/01/2018 21:09

For those saying booking in doesn't take that long, my first appt took from 8am to 1pm - booking in took an hour, then meeting with specialist ante natal team relating to an existing medical condition (several different people in the team), then discussions about different medications and trekking over to (& waiting forever) at pharmacy for said new drugs.

There's a chance (possibly a slim one) that she's in a similar situation.

SusanBunch · 19/01/2018 21:11

I think people would surely just call in sick rather than invent a fake pregnancy.

lljkk · 19/01/2018 21:11

She's got you by the short & Curlies, SYC.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 19/01/2018 21:12

I did read all your posts. I just don't know when she normally finishes. Is it a standard 9-5 job? In which case she's scuppered if she doesn't get the leave.

ATeardropExplodes · 19/01/2018 21:12

'yeah sure. Shame that means you missing the holiday though as you had your flight that afternoon didn't you. Shall I refund the annual leave days back?'

Bahhhhhumbug · 19/01/2018 21:12

l genuinely wanted to give her the half day off....
Yeah sounds like it... Confused

MrsFezziwig · 19/01/2018 21:13

If you attend an NHS hospital appointment you can get a form confirming that you attended (you need to ask for this though). Ask her to provide this and see what she says.
I’m failing to understand though why she didn’t book the half day when she booked the holiday if she knew she needed it - or had the other two staff already booked it? In which case, if she worked for me and came to me and said “I’ve got the chance to book a holiday but I need an extra half day”, I would have done what I could to facilitate it. That’s providing she is normally a valuable worker with no prior history of CFism.

SayYouCare · 19/01/2018 21:14

ATear She booked the week off before she booked the holiday.

Yes it's a 9-6.30 job

Bahhh I genuinely did, but I couldn't. And now I feel like I'm being played, perhaps

Friedgreen · 19/01/2018 21:14

If she has had ivf or repeated miscarriages or previous pregnancy related illnesses her appointment will take much longer.

I think you need to trust that she’s telling you the truth OP. You are being really petty over 4 hours.

pastabest · 19/01/2018 21:15

You know what it's probably both

A pregnancy is a pretty big lie just for half a day off.

She probaly is pregnant, but what's the betting the booking appointment isn't actually the day she also needs off to get to the airport, because that would pretty bad planning really wouldn't it.

MummyInHeel · 19/01/2018 21:15

She probably had the appointment all along but didnt want to say she was pregnant so said it was for flight. But then had to tell you. Flight's probably tomorrow...

NeilPetark · 19/01/2018 21:15

My London booking in appointments were in my local clinic.

SayYouCare · 19/01/2018 21:15

If you attend an NHS hospital appointment you can get a form confirming that you attended (you need to ask for this though). Ask her to provide this and see what she says

Technically, I have no grounds to even request evidence of the first MW appointment. That's for all other appointments there after

OP posts:
Friedgreen · 19/01/2018 21:16

Agree with you @mummy. Also fits in with the longer appointment. I bet she’s had previous problems that OP wasn’t told about.

edwinbear · 19/01/2018 21:16

I think she is perhaps a CF by the sounds of it. But all you can do really is sit back and watch the show as she tries to cover her tracks when she get back.

ShellyBoobs · 19/01/2018 21:16

How long has she been with the company, OP?

She sounds like a piss-taker.

I’d be looking to get rid of her but looks like she might have got in there first with her ‘pregnant’ trump card.

Shouldnotwouldnot · 19/01/2018 21:18

If her flight is at 3 how would leaving at 12 give her time to rest and have a catch up - unless you’re right next door to an airport? None of this makes sense
