To ask you what my first car should be?

Cars are uncharted territory for me. I have my test on the 6th Feb and so am starting to think about my first car.

Requirements:
•5door
•large enough boot for a pram
•budget £4K
•suitable for a 5" short arse

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ford focus maybe. We've been very happy with ours

GinIsIn · 19/01/2018 09:08

We are looking at a VW polo or mini one. Similar requirements!

SadieHH · 19/01/2018 09:08

Ford Focus. I’m on my third and love them.

Leatherboundanddown · 19/01/2018 09:09

As a new driver you will need a small engine size as insurance is crippling. So look at a 1.2 litre engine.

Haint · 19/01/2018 09:09

A Nissan Micra
Reliable, cheap, simple and straighforward

Leatherboundanddown · 19/01/2018 09:09

Mini one has a very small boot though. I learned to drive in one and loved driving it. Also 5ft short and it was ok for me.

ItchyKondera · 19/01/2018 09:10

Ford focus, or even Fiesta if the focus is too big, but try the pram in the boot first, not sure on how big they are TBH

JaceLancs · 19/01/2018 09:10

VW polo

Unihorn · 19/01/2018 09:11

I had a Skoda Fabia for my first. Loved it! I didn't find insurance so bad for a first time driver; I was 23 when I passed.

SnowiestMountain · 19/01/2018 09:13

I have a Kia Rio, love it!

glow1984 · 19/01/2018 09:14

Can you have an experienced driver as a named driver on your insurance? That will bring your insurance down.

DP has done insurance quotes for me and he could save me over a grand by being a named driver. (Aiming to pass by mid year).

He's also suggested a ford focus for me :)

HeadlessGummyBears · 19/01/2018 09:15

I know absolutely nothing about cars but this website was quite helpful.

tabulahrasa · 19/01/2018 09:24

There not a huge difference in boot size between a focus and a fiesta tbh... how big is the pram?

What are you learning in?

GreasyHairDoNotCare · 19/01/2018 09:28

Thanks for the replies. Yes I do have someone to put on the insurance to bring the costs down. I am currently learning in a mini, which I love, but the boots are tiny and they are just too expensive. I've never heard of anyone getting a mini for £4,000. The pram is the mothercare journey so separates into two parts, but it's still rather bulky.

Skoda Fabia or Polo IMO

Stay away from French cars, especially FIAT.

Smaller engine is usually cheaper but not always. Don’t rule something out just because it has a slightly larger engine, you can always run a dummy insurance quote.

MrTrebus · 19/01/2018 09:55

You are only 5 inches tall? Grin

Skoda fabia estate/ibiza estate

Northernmum12 · 19/01/2018 09:56

Toyota Yaris or Auris, fantastic reliable cars. I echo what others have said about staying away from Fiats or Citroen’s.

MrTrebus · 19/01/2018 09:56

Also car wow is a good website to help you choose

Couchpotato3 · 19/01/2018 09:56

Another vote for Skoda. My older kids both have the smallest ones (CItygo?) but you would probably need the next one up to fit in a pram. They've been really happy with them (one is 5 ft 4!) - comfy, reliable etc.

MotherofaSurvivor · 19/01/2018 10:01

Hyundai's are really solid & reliable. As are VW Golf. Ford Focus is also very spacious and safe.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 19/01/2018 10:02

I'm 5ft and have driven Ford Fiesta/ Ford Focus/ Vauxhall Corsa/ Honda Civic and currently Honda FRV happily. The latter is my favourite but probably a bit big for a new driver. The only car I've had which I absolutely would not recommend would be a Fiat Punto.

Honda Jazz might be good as they have smaller engines but are quite roomy as small cars go. Hondas tend to be really reliable too.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 19/01/2018 10:04

Oh we also have a Hyundai i10 as our little car - insurance is really cheap and you could fit some buggies in the boot but not others. But DH usually drives that as I'm normally the one ferrying 3 kids about!

Pootleflump76 · 19/01/2018 10:05

I'm 5'2" and have a Nissan Micra. It's a great size for me to drive but my pram doesn't fit in the boot so I'd take your pram to check it fits if you go to look at any.

CaptainHammer · 19/01/2018 10:06

Hyundai i10

BibiThree · 19/01/2018 10:09

Your height shouldn't be too much of a factor: I'm 5ft and drive a Ford SMax. Agree with other who have said small engine size, cheaper to insure, tax and run.
