To think it is not that easy to get and keep a job?

Seeing as the unemployed are getting a hard time on here I thought id give my pov.
It is not THAT easy to get and keep any old job. Take jobs for unskilled workers such as factory work and cleaning ( which i have done). Most is through an agency which may be temporary and increasingly zero houelrs contract.
I was fired from a factory job as i wasnt fast enough. I wworked hard but after 8 hours putting spribkles on cakes on a night shiftni was exhausted.

Then take higher paid jobs such as teaching, law, accountancy etc. First you need qualifications to even get a foot in. Then you face intense competition and constant scrutiny.

I cureently work pt but am looking for more hours. Most jobs are zero hour short term contracts in my field.

Im just fed up with reading about 'useless' men / partnerswho loose their jobs or feckless benefit scroungers...as though getting and keeping a job was a walk in the park.

I agree with you.

People are always going on about 'just get a job stacking shelves in the supermarket' as if that's the lowest of the low and any fool could do it.

But the hoops you have to jump through to even get an interview are immense, and the competition fierce. You can't just stroll in.

Quorafun · 18/01/2018 20:05

I knew a consultant anaesthetist who worked a zero hours contract. She had to do that if she wanted to stay in the same city as her husband.

Jobs are hard. Relationships are hard. Generally, being an adult is hard. I don't know who these useless people are that you are describing, but I bet the ones calling them useless have other criteria which they apply, not professional

SleepySheepy · 18/01/2018 20:07

Nothing worth having is easy. If I was ever to be unhappy with someone for not having a job or not pulling their weight I would only be unhappy if they weren't trying, or using excuses to take the easy way out.

Some people work hard to get what they want or need, some people give up. And yes I would judge anyone for just giving up, but not if they were working hard and were unlucky or in a difficult situation.

malificent7 · 18/01/2018 20:19

What about people who work in v tough jobs? I resiged from teaching as i was being bullied so i did 'just give up' that post. Life is too short to be bullied at work .
Also not everyone is suited to certain jobs. You cant stack shelves if you have a bad back and you cant be a cleaner if you are allergic to bleach etc.
Ive done care work and some people werent cut out for that. Too sqeamish. People shouldnt stay in roles they arent suited to.

I bet that consultant anaethetist was making a whole lot more dough than i was though!! Id do a zero hour contract happily on that wage!!

She prob had to train v hard to get that post though. Not everyone can do that sort of work.

No, but...lots of people are suited to work they don't know about IMO. And we don't get to try enough different things to know what we might excel at.

KenForPM · 18/01/2018 20:29

Never that’s the problem with getting a job in the first place! There is so much out there that it’s almost impossible to know where to start if you don’t have any clue what you want to do. Obviously there are some things you wouldn’t be eligible for eg being a doctor without a medicine degree etc, but there’s a lot out there that we’ve likely never heard of!

Whatshallidonowpeople · 18/01/2018 20:36

I disagree, jobs are easy to get and keep. If you do a good job, they keep You, if you don't, they'll find a reason to get rid.

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2018 20:37

I disagree that the 'getting' bit is easy. Getting your foot in the door is hard.

Polarbearflavour · 18/01/2018 20:47

I’m applying for internal jobs at the moment to be with DP. Civil Service so you think it would be easy to get one but no. Confused God knows how candidates applying externally ever get in!

I’m moving somewhere where there are far fewer jobs though. I had previously found it semi-easy to get personal assistant jobs in London that paid well because there are so many jobs going!

My present job is making me unhappy but if I just leave I’m not sure how easy it would be to find something else.

ForalltheSaints · 18/01/2018 20:48

I think it varies greatly according to where you are and your age.

SleepySheepy · 18/01/2018 20:54

@maleficent7 - I know exactly what it's like to work in a very tough job, I have done for years. I'm by no means in a position of having it easy.

If someone was able to walk out of a job with no repercussions, fine. If they walked out of a job they didn't like or weren't suited to and then for example couldn't provide for their DC then they are giving up way too easily. That's when I would think they had done the wrong thing.

MissEliza · 18/01/2018 21:27

Ds1 is trying to get a proper part time job as he's just got casual work. It's awful how employers treat job seekers. One restaurant asked him to come for an interview on a Saturday night with the possibility of working that night. He polished his shoes, ironed his shirt etc only for the interview to be cancelled half an hour before, when he was on his way.

NapQueen · 18/01/2018 21:30

Getting a job is VERY hard.

Keeping a job is easy. Turn up ready to worl at the right time, fill your day with actual work, dont take the piss, complete everything to the best of your ability, dont pull sickies when you arent actually ill.

MissEliza · 18/01/2018 21:31

Oh, and also, the way employers treat young people in general is disgraceful, based on what I hear from ds and his friends, such as arriving for a shift only to be sent home after an hour because it's 'too quiet so we don't need you.'

KenForPM · 18/01/2018 21:31

Whatshallido seriously??? It’s really not as simple as that. Thousands have been made redundant through no fault of their own, even if they were fantastic, they can still be made redundant due to eg cutbacks.
Getting a job isn’t “easy” either. What crap.

NewYearNewMe18 · 18/01/2018 21:37

What about people who work in v tough jobs? I resiged from teaching as i was being bullied so i did 'just give up' that post. Life is too short to be bullied at work .

I assume you took out a grievance, utilised your union etc ? Why did you resign? Why didn't you transfer to another school?

mercurymaze · 18/01/2018 21:39

no jobs are secure these days, individuals should ensure they have skills that can be moved into each industry.

KenForPM · 18/01/2018 21:40

She did only say she left that post. She didn’t say what she did afterwards.
Teaching is a difficult profession these days. I’d never put myself through it.

Babyroobs · 18/01/2018 21:43

YANBU. I'm lucky to have always been in employment but then I am a qualified professional of which there is a shortage ! I deal with a lot of people in my line of work who have very poor employment situations - they are not entitled to much sick pay when they get ill, they work through agencies etc . I had one client last week who had basically been given a warning over absence when she took time off to care for her terminally ill husband. How do you chose between your job and your husband. Many employers are just awful.

TheMathsTrainee · 18/01/2018 21:49

Yanbu

I think when you are in work you take it for granted.

But when I had my career break, I remember how difficult it was to get back in again and honestly thought that I d be unemployed forever.

malificent7 · 18/01/2018 21:55

I left that job and got another one had a month of sick due to stress straight away. I have filed grievences before...it takes ages and nothing ever comes of it.

OP posts:
malificent7 · 18/01/2018 22:02

I mean....i took a month off sick with stress then went back to work elsewhere.

If you are very badly bullied then there is no energy to file a grievance.

Im also very bad at office politics...another hindrance to which i have fallen foul.
