I know MN isn't a doctors and all that jazz . I'm more curious if I should be worried...

I was fine yesterday morning but then all of a sudden I started feeling unwell - shaky , lethargic and just out of sorts.

I then developed a dry cough in a few hours.

I have periods of feeling really cold to the bone but my skin is hot to touch .

I didn't sleep well last night .

I have a raw feeling in my chest and my throat feels very "airy" but not sore .

My whole body is aching but mainly my neck . My neck feels stiff to the point I want to cry - but I can move it , it's just the constant achy pain .

I have a dull but not horrific headache.

If I breathe in too much or too fast , I get a sharp pain under my boob .

My kidneys are giving me stabbing pains but I'm wondering if this is because I haven't been drinking enough water .

I have felt very sick but have been able to do some work today (I work from home).

The moment I stand I feel lightheaded and nauseous .

I've taken to my bed but I can still eat , move around etc . Albeit I'm not eating as much as I usually do that will do me some good

Anyone else had this virus ?

Yes, I am aware of that. However, Aussie flu is the one causing issues at the moment

for the people who have it, yes. But there are other types of flu about, and other viruses and illnesses.

SuckingEggs · 18/01/2018 14:26

I’ve had this. Awful virus. Took 10 days to clear.

SuckingEggs · 18/01/2018 14:26

I managed to work though, but I work at home. Really knocked me out.

I've come to the conclusion that it is flu.

I'm in bed with layers of clothing and blankets on with the heating full blast and I am cold to the bone .

I'm shivery and aching head to toe with a bit of nausea thrown in.

And a headache and stiff neck . This is not a cold . No sniffles .

OH caught the virus and has been the most poorly he's been for years as the colds he normally gets are just mild. However, it wasn't the flu. He was knocked out for about 10 days, but still able to get up, and do some things, albeit feeling tired quickly.

DD however caught the flu and the two were not comparable. She had a temperature up to 39 and only going down for an hour or so after taking paracetamol/ibuprofen. She was sick three nights in a row. She was in bed and was even too weak to shower for 5 days. She only just managed to force some fluid down her throat and wasn't able to eat anything at all for 3 days and then only toast twice a day afterwards. She was so miserable, she cried even though last time I saw her crying was many years ago.

Not undermining the nasty virus that has gone about and indeed, has left people coughing, aching, and feeling miserable for up to two weeks, but the flu, the real one is something else.

swingofthings · 18/01/2018 14:53

OP, at the moment, it could be either. Your temperature is not high and your symptoms don't sound yet severe enough to be able to call it the flu.

Either way, there is nothing to do but to control your symptoms, so take regular paracetamol/ibuprofen and make sure you stay hydrated. Make sure someone looks after you and watch how your illness progresses. At the moment, there is nothing a GP can tell you on the phone or face to face than the above.

swingofthings · 18/01/2018 14:54

Just one last thing, if your neck stiffness or headache do get worse, then do call 111.

SalsaCado · 18/01/2018 14:56

YY I agree , I won't be bothering the surgery or anything . I was slightly concerned earlier over the burning in my chest but it seems to have passed .

Sounds like mild case of flu - yes you CAN get milder versions of the flu that are horrible but you can sort of function. I think its often people who are more mildly affected that pass it on more, as they still try and function instead of staying away

LondonLassInTheCountry · 18/01/2018 15:10

Dont leave the chest pain. Neck pain or headache if severe

SalsaCado · 18/01/2018 15:14

Yes I'm going to keep an eye on the chest pain and neck , if it gets worse I'll call the helpline .

Sounds like the first two days (of the 4) I was misdiagnosed with muscle strain (by 4 different drs over 4 days). Turned out to be Encephalitis which between the disease and the nerve damage caused when they fucked up the lumbar puncture (7 attempts). I'd see how it progresses by tomorrow - i remained Ill but not ridiculously so until boom, day four projectile vomiting couldn't speak, felt like my head has been crushed by a truck. Has totally fucked up my life so while it could be nothing ...

This is going around at the moment. My family have all had the same symptoms. Last a couple of days.

swingofthings · 18/01/2018 16:53

The NHS Medical Director said last week that 1/3 people with flu confirmed by a test are asymptomatic i.e. no symptoms at all and another 1/3 have symptoms mild enough that they might be at work. Hence he wants all medical staff to have the vaccine so they don't pass flu on without knowing.

Would be very interested in this actual research. How did they know to test people if they had no symptoms at all!

I think what is meant is that it takes 3 days for symptoms to appear with the flu, so you can infect someone before you actually get the symptoms, not that you can catch the flu and have no symptoms at all throughout the infection.

NHS information site is clear that symptoms are very similar but are more severe with the flu.

swingofthings · 18/01/2018 16:59

A good article here that shows that the difference really does come down to severity of symptoms.

Whichever you're suffering from OP, hope you get better soon.

What are the symptoms of pneumonia ?

I've googled obviously but how does one define chest pain?

My chest is aching and burning slightly but I would have no idea if it's something to worry about .
