A nod to Banzai there for old timers like me.

Old thread here.

Question is, is it Mueller time yet? Anyone fancy placing a bet on when Trump will exit the POTUS role?

My bet: 20 March 2019.

BBC quotes Trump as saying "Here's what's fair - if you're telling me they're horrible people, horrible racist people, I would certainly apologise if you'd like me to do that."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42829555

So, hasn't actually apologised. Just said he would... But it's probably as close as he'll get, and I'm pleased he's publicly repudiated the racist twats.

PerkingFaintly · 26/01/2018 09:32

Just catching up with the Mueller news. Holy cow!

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 26/01/2018 09:35

It's only taken months! ( had to google because I genuinely had no idea when the retweeting had taken place)

Meaningless words from Trump (because aren't all his words meaningless?) but:

Trump on NYT Mueller story, as he arrived for Day 2 of Davos: “Fake news. Fake news. Typical New York Times. Fake stories.”

BiglyBadgers · 26/01/2018 09:35

I find the idea that anyone is taking Piers Morgan's word as the arbiter of what constitutes racist language rather befuddling. Confused

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 26/01/2018 09:38

I don't think it will be cancelled by May and certainly not on the back of a petition but given how thin skinned he is, it would be nice to make it clear how many people don't want him here (and even if the government don't retract an invitation he might decide he'd rather not face protesters etc again). If there are any other petitions people spot, please do link to them here as I'd be happy to sign them:

It's Trump - everything he does is bizarre! This apology will be held up as a reason to forgive and forget but it's shite - he didn't actually apologise, it's taken 2 months, Theresa bloody May told him how outrageous it was which he chose to turn into a twitter spat, but it's actually fine because Piers explained it to him so now he sees the light.

PerkingFaintly · 26/01/2018 09:50

Oh I don't imagine the not-quite-apology is sincere. He just wants to feel the lurrve, and in front of Piers and that particular telly camera, that was the way to get it.

But I prefer it when his pathological behaviour causes him to publicly reject racists, than when it causes him to embrace them.

PerkingFaintly · 26/01/2018 10:12

OK, picking through the Go Fire Mueller story...

Now I've got my breath back after the headline issues, I noticed the following gem (quoted by Maddow from the NYT piece):

“Mr. McGahn also told White House officials that Mr. Trump would not follow through on the dismissal on his own. The president then backed off.”

If true, this is an important message for the Trump-enablers: stop enabling him, and things will stop happening (or slow down). You're not a powerless flunky just enacting the inevitable: he's too chicken to do much of his own dirty work and it you refuse to do it for him, you may create a significant obstacle to it happening at all.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 26/01/2018 10:16

I agree except it's slightly caveated with the annoyance that this will be seen as good enough and redemptive and a reason to not question that Trump is a racist by some, when that's patently not the case. Although people who do think that are probably always going to support Trump whatever he does so I suppose it makes no difference.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2018 10:30

I don't really understand Theresa May and her curiously stubborn embracement of Trump.

BiglyBadgers · 26/01/2018 10:40

I think it is wrapped up in the Brexit problem kitten. We are walking away from the EU and claiming we can make up for the loss of free trade by having super duper trade deals with all the other amazing countries. The USA is a big one. The brexiteers need a trade deal with the US. They need to be able to say how our special relationship with the USA will make up for the loss of the relationship with the EU. So May has to play at being friends with Trump or she is even more screwed than she already is.

.@realDonaldTrump is clearly not remorseful about promoting far-right extremist hate groups. It was a non-apology. I am totally opposed to him visiting the UK.

HesaidIwasflighty · 26/01/2018 11:46

I heard a clip of the interview with Trump on RTE Radio this morning. He definitely didn't apologise, he just offered to if Piers Morgan (of all people!) wanted him to. Classic deflection by someone who doesn't think/know they've done anything wrong.

Also, it was a short clip, so I didn't hear the interview in full, but I understand that when Morgan actually pressed him on the idea of an apology, he continued to deflect. Hmm

I shall dive in and make a new thread...

Thanks for the new thread, Perking. And for all the nice things.

Trump just got booed when he talked about the "dishonest" and "fake" press at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
