Knife in left hand?

creamcheeseandlox · 16/01/2018 14:07

I am right handed but when I eat I hold my knife in my left hand and fork in right, so in theory like a left hander. This often means I switch them when in a restaurant etc. It's never caused me any grief or bother. My dh always points it out as the 'wrong' way to eat and it winds me up. One of my dc also has randomly adopted this as well as was holding his knife in the left hand. My husband pointed this out and said it's the wrong way to eat and that he should switch it over. I got annoyed as there is no technical 'wrong or right' way. He eats what ever way he is comfortable. I then said that if he was left handed should he be forced to write with his left hand as that is the dominant way in society? He said that that is different Hmm. AIBU in just letting my dc get on with it?

Oh,ffs, Fail - meant other way round, lol!

HildaZelda · 16/01/2018 20:23

I'm ambidextrous with a knife and fork. Always have been. Frequently get asked if I'm left handed. I was out for dinner with 2 friends recently and bizzarely enough all 3 of us were. We're all right handed with everything else.

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 16/01/2018 20:39

I eat with the knife in the left hand, so does my DS. Neither of us has any problem in cutting properly.

CountFosco · 16/01/2018 20:56

Most table knives are sharpened or serrated on the left side which means they are easier to use in your right hand (I've got a fancy tomato knife I can't use because as a leftie I use kitchen knives in my left hand). Of course if you are left handed it's difficult using a knife in your non-dominant hand, my bitch mother would give me a hard time about how I used a table knife, wasn't until years later I realised why I'd found them so hard to use. I get my revenge now, we are a lefty dominant household and boy does she struggle when she tries to use our left handed scissors!

polaricecaps · 16/01/2018 21:48

I was taught 'correctly' I.e. Knife on right, and it's so drummed into me I can't help but notice if other people do it the other way round and wonder why. This includes my OH; it drives me a bit crazy but I know it's fundamentally ridiculous.

I've also recently been studying the way my in-laws hold their knives (more like a pencil) as it looks so uncomfortable to me!

Eemamc · 16/01/2018 21:53

My dad is left handed, but eats right handed, and my brother is right handed but eats left handed. There is no right or wrong way, tell hubby to wind his neck in. Didn’t forcing left handed children to write with their right hand cause problems like stuttering in the past? As long as they’re eating sensibly in a socially appropriate manner, no problem whatsoever

ThePants999 · 16/01/2018 22:30

The "correct" way makes absolutely zero sense to me.

As a right-handed person, I have significantly more dexterity with my right hand. That's why I write with my right hand. It's a fork that wants dexterity, not a knife. A knife gets pushed against the fork and moved backwards and forwards (which is arm motion, not hand motion) - I could do that with my toes if I had to. A fork needs all sorts of complex motions, including the critical one of lifting to my mouth without dropping the peas or smearing food on my face Wink So obviously I'm going to put the fork in my right hand. The ridiculous "correct" way be damned.

Polarbear46 · 16/01/2018 22:32

I’m the worst, I swap hands a lot 😂

creamcheeseandlox · 16/01/2018 22:35

Who once decided one day that the knife went on the right and the fork in the left? And why that why and not the t'other?

steff13 · 16/01/2018 22:38

I'm left-handed (90% per the survey). I hold my fork in my left hand and my knife in my right.

Cambionome · 16/01/2018 22:43

I would judge you if I saw you holding your knife in your left hand - sorry.

ThePants999 · 16/01/2018 22:47

Oh, and that survey. Which hand do you use to turn the pages in a book - that's not a good factor to determine right vs left handed, because a book is not symmetrical. You almost always turn the page forwards, i.e. move the right hand page to the left hand side - which is easier to do with your left hand, because it's easier to extract your left hand from under the newly turned page on the left hand side, than it is your right.

BlondeB83 · 16/01/2018 22:49

Apparently this is often caused by the knife being introduced too late when you’re a child.

Fifthtimelucky · 16/01/2018 23:26

I wonder whether it is also because we so often eat food that doesn't need a knife at all (eg pasta) and is eaten one handed with fork prongs facing up. Obviously if you are using one hand only, you will use your dominant hand.

I agree with those who say say the skilful work is the use of the knife and that therefore right-handers would normally have the knife in their right hands.

My pet hate is knives and forks being used to tear food apart, rather than the fork holding it still while the knife cuts it. It looks awful, but more importantly, it's not very controlled so your elbows can bash into the person sitting next to you and bits of food can end up all over the table and floor.

LemonysSnicket · 16/01/2018 23:30

Same

TheNecroscope · 16/01/2018 23:46

thePants I always turn a book page with my right hand not left! My logic being that your right hand is closer, what’s the point of reaching over with your left?

I guess knives are used in the right hand traditionally because knives were used alone for hundreds and hundreds of years before forks were even invented and would mostly have been in your right hand. So when forks came along the right hand was already in use!

I am left handed but my predominant hand is my right hand for some things.

Use pen/pencil in left hand,
Use knife in right, fork in left, spoon in left,
Wear watch on left wrist.
Husband right handed and wears watch on right wrist.
In PE at school I would use bats and racquets in left hand, did ok, one day tried using right hand and was hitting the rounders ball out of the field. My hand eye coordination is better using my right hand. But for netball I could score by throwing the ball using my left hand, no coordination with right! Hockey, hold the stick to my right.
Quidditch - not tried it yet.

YANBU to let your children just get on with it.
Your DH is being unreasonable to try to dictate the way other people do things, especially if it concerns something inconsequential.

Lana1234 · 17/01/2018 01:54

Same as you. Ever since I was a child. It just doesn't feel comfortable for me the "correct" way so why would I do it. Odd when people judge you for it, I don't see how it matters in any way.

shakingmyhead1 · 17/01/2018 02:08

you are most likely right handed BUT left brain dominant , i am and i hold my fork and knife left handed, my daughter also does, but my son does not,
we also target shoot left dominant and my son is right dominant when target shooting
other than writing i do almost everything left handed
and whos he to be saying you are doing it wrong? these days im sure you can call him out on some form of left brain dominance discrimination or something

Gladiola44 · 17/01/2018 02:17

My DH holds the knife and fork in the wrong hands too and he’s right handed. I think it looks odd and I do ask him to hold his knife in his right hand. From what I’ve seen, when right handed people hold the fork in their right hand they don’t tend to use the knife that much and mostly shovel the food up with the fork, which I think looks awful.

AmaraSas · 17/01/2018 02:22

My grandad was ambidextrous and when ds was younger we thought he may be too, he writes with his right hand but plays guitar and eats with a knife and fork as if left handed

When we talk about it he says he is "both handed"

I think you dh needs to get a grip op, there are far more important things to worry about

Ohyesiam · 17/01/2018 07:36

Your husband needs to get out more of his life revolves round such small issues.
Tell him you've signed him up for some charity work.

DoJo · 17/01/2018 09:58

I would judge you if I saw you holding your knife in your left hand - sorry.

I would judge you if I knew such petty things were so important to you.

MrsKoala · 17/01/2018 10:09

Judge me as what tho? Judge me as common? Uncouth? Left handed? Uneducated?

Would it prevent you from being friends with me? Offering me a job? Eating with me?

How would your judgement manifest itself? would you tut? roll your eyes? tell me i'm eating wrong?
