In the car while you nipped into Aldi (or any other supermarket) to get something for dinner?

Has 14 year old got a phone so that she could call you if they kick off?
I'd be happy to leave my 14 year old in charge but he's very sensible. My 12 year old probably won't be sensible enough when he's 45 in all honesty!

user7654321 · 15/01/2018 16:51

Yes - As long as the 14 year old knows they are responsible for the younger two.

Cornettoninja · 15/01/2018 16:52

I would send the 14 year old in for me tbh.

Babyiwantabump · 15/01/2018 16:55

It was more to do that they seem a bit more exposed in a car park than at home IYSWIM.

I trust the 14 yr old and she has a phone.

Have done it now anyway and both the younger too stayed asleep and no machete wielding mad men attacked the car so alls good 😂

Any sensible 14 year old should be able to be left in charge of siblings in a car for 5 minutes surely?

I leave my 10 and 7 year olds outside the Coop while I nip in for milk and bread though so I’m probably not the right person to be asking...

Babyiwantabump · 15/01/2018 16:58

Yielding

OP posts:
crunchymint · 15/01/2018 16:59

Yes, but then when I was young many 15 year olds were in full time work.

Babyiwantabump · 15/01/2018 17:00

*younger two . I’m not illiterate I promise!

So what's for tea?!

KatharinaRosalie · 15/01/2018 17:02

Of course. Most of my friends were babysitting for money at that age. It's baffling that just a generation later some people wouldn't leave them in charge for even a few minutes.

Babyroobs · 15/01/2018 17:03

Of course !! I used to look after a 3 year old when I was 14 and get paid for it.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/01/2018 17:03

Id send the 14 year old into the shop and snooze wait in the car with the two younger ones

KC225 · 15/01/2018 17:05

Yes, awake or asleep

omnishambles · 15/01/2018 17:05

The whole 'look what we used to do thing' isn't an argument really is it. We used to drink and drive and not use seatbelts. Doesn't mean it was optimal or safe behaviour.

Flashinggreen · 15/01/2018 17:12

I would normally say it’ll be fine but this happened at the weekend with a 10YO left alone. If something happened your 14YO would have to get the younger ones out of the car.

Letsgetreadytorumbleagain · 15/01/2018 17:15

Yes @omnishambles but there proven risks associated with those things now. What are the proven risks of leaving a 14 year old in charge of 2 small children for 5 minutes Hmm

I used to look after my small siblings at that age all the time

Flashinggreen · 15/01/2018 17:15

I definitely think next time send in the 14YO and you get a rest.

crunchymint · 15/01/2018 17:22

omni Except many 14 year olds were perfectly capable. It is not the same as drinking driving.

Babyiwantabump · 15/01/2018 17:24

It’s Mexican Monday here do fajitas tonight Tempus
And it was more to do with what might happen while I left them - and would it be fair on DD for her to be responsible for the younger two if an extremely unlikely situation might occur as in Flashings post above - rather than if I trust DD to watch them for 5 minutes.

I used to watch my sisters 3 young children over the school holidays when I was that age but that was mostly in a house where I wouldn’t open the door etc .

But in a car any weirdo could walk past and see an opportunity and I was worried that someone might see them alone in the car and call the police etc

OP posts:
Glumglowworm · 15/01/2018 17:33

Yes especially if the little ones are asleep unless the 14 year old is likely to decide to wander off

Lizzie48 · 15/01/2018 17:36

It depends on the 14 year old tbh. If they're used to being left in charge of younger siblings then it's no issue at all.

Basecamp21 · 15/01/2018 17:46

Absolutely - completely baffled why people are saying they wouldn't.

BackforGood · 15/01/2018 17:48

Good grief.
I too am completely baffled as to why this would even be a question, let alone some posters saying the wouldn't.
From your title I was expecting you to say ........ while I go out for the night, or ...... all day while I'm at work. Confused

llangennith · 15/01/2018 17:50

Yes of course.
