Through, though, thorough, tough.

English is shit.

BashStreetKid · 14/01/2018 23:43

For many of us, drawer and draw have almost identical pronunciation

But for everyone, they don't have almost identical spellings.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/01/2018 23:43

DH used to say, "irregardless" before I threatened to leave him corrected him.

MintChocAddict · 14/01/2018 23:44

No need to apologise Golden

Some people say it one way some people say it another neither is wrong just different. But if you start correcting people on how to say it you just sound pretentious. Accents are a wonderful thing.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 23:47

I pronounce the r in Carl but nowhere near as decoratively as some of the Scottish accents I’ve heard.

My DC has a fantastic gymnastics instructor from Glasgow who invites them all to take a “boo” at the end of class. Grin

I pronounce there, their and they're all the same way. They are still different words with different meanings and spellings though, aren't they?

Draw and drawer are just the same as that for me. Some people will pronounce them the same, and others with a slight difference, but that will just be down to regional variations. You still spell them differently.
There are plenty of other examples in the English language.

picklemepopcorn · 14/01/2018 23:51

@Stitchit , I still say 'by there' and 'by here', now in a minute, and 'is it?' On the end of statements, and I left wales a long time ago. God's own country though, and I'd love to move back.

Schoowell, froowut, are now school and fruit.

I really struggle with pronouncing library (liberary) and veterinary (veterinarary).

Here, year and ear are all homophones, in wales. How ever did I learn to spell.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 23:53

Oh I went out with a man from Methyr once. He took me to visit his family and friends. I think I caught about 1 in every tenth word.

thegreylady · 14/01/2018 23:53

My gran called her knickers drawers...

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 23:53

Merthyr!

Missingstreetlife · 14/01/2018 23:55

Look in the Argos catalog or something if you can't google or use a dictionary!

Welsh for microwave is popti ping. Try arguing with that

dazed I think posters are simply pointing out that the pronunciation of 'draw' instead of drawer can lead to some people mistakingly believing that you spell it that way, when in fact they are two completely different words with completely different meanings.
See Chester Draws post earlier as a point of reference.

RoseWhiteTips · 14/01/2018 23:56

It’s a drawer.

There is no such thing as a Chester draws.

It is not a matter of pronunciation; it is s case of ignorance. Consult a dictionary and learn something.

Argh. You mean mistakenly, surely?

mathanxiety · 15/01/2018 00:03

They are not homophones. One has an R sound at the end. This is how the majority of English speakers pronounces it.

It's fine to have regional differences in pronunciation, but I admit to judging people who use the 'draw' spelling for a drawer. Surely people read?

South East here. I know the spellings. I know the meanings. I'm not a fool. In my accent drawer and draw sound the same. I couldn't actually easily make the sound for drawer.

Just how difficult can it be?

RoseWhiteTips · 15/01/2018 00:10

If you think it is fine, be aware most people will think you are stupid.

Grilledaubergines · 15/01/2018 00:11

Who said it's difficult Rose?

MintChocAddict · 15/01/2018 00:14

I stand corrected Rose Wink

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/01/2018 00:27

Who cares how it's pronounced or where you are from?
The correct spelling is 'drawer'. End of

Why is this even a debate?
