Is iorning a thing of the past?

The only time I find myself reaching for the iron these days is if someone is going to a wedding and a shirt, or outfit needs ironing. Or if one of us is going for an interview.
Otherwise, I'm careful how I wash and hang things. No creases. Job done.
I don't have an 'ironing basket' and never have a pile of ironing to get through every week.

Am I slovenly? or what?
My mother is a slave to the iron and spend hours and hours every week wading through a pile of ironing. Whereas I don't see the point. Life's too short. I've worked it out my mother spends, on average, 12 hours a week Ironing!

Do you iron?
Or not?

(Obviously if your job entails having an ironed shirt Monday to Friday, exceptions are made)

what gets ironed:

DH''s formal white shirts for work
My tops and Ts
knitwear

Egyptian cotton bedding- sheets, pillow slips, duvet covers.
Tumble drying is expensive, mine get a blow on the line outside, then a steam iron.
If you use 100% cotton bedding it's softer and looks better after ironing.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 14/01/2018 22:07

I iron most things too, hate creased clothes or bedding.

I have friends that won't iron and you can tell they haven't bothered.

PollyPerky · 14/01/2018 22:07

. I guarantee that if you saw my DD going to school tomorrow morning in her uniform with its sharp pleats and perfect collar you would not be able to tell that I had not ironed a scrap of it

That's because it's all polycotton or other synthetics.

thegreatbeyond · 14/01/2018 22:08

Shirts go to the ironing person. No way am I doing that.

I iron my baby's things, and sometimes mine, but that's it.

A580Hojas · 14/01/2018 22:08

"And I think people who don’t iron are lazy. That’s just my opinion."

Yep, just your opinion and wrong.

PistFump · 14/01/2018 22:11

What am I doing wrong?! Stuff comes out of my tumbler like it's been through a hedge backwards. I don't over fill it, make sure I shake everything out before it goes in... but I'm having to iron everything to make it look in some way decent...

stickytoffeevodka · 14/01/2018 22:11

But dusting and hoovering is about hygiene and cleanliness.

Having creased clothes has nothing to do with how clean they are - and I really don't care if people think I'm lazy because I'd rather be outside or with my family then ironing for hours a week Wink

HaHaHmm · 14/01/2018 22:12

I get why you need to iron cotton and linen but surely if your knitwear and jersey (i.e. t-shirts etc) need to be ironed to look presentable then it's because the fabric is poor quality. Good-quality cotton jersey is heavy enough for the creases to drop out on their own and lambswool, merino and cashmere don't need ironing. On the odd occasion that I'm made the mistake of buying knitwear or jersey containing viscose then it has quickly turned into a rag after a couple of washes.

halfwitpicker · 14/01/2018 22:14

Don't iron unless DH has an interview I. E Never.

I just use decrease on the tumble dryer or run my hair straighteners over stuff.

BrollyDolly · 14/01/2018 22:14

Regarding ironing things for a baby -same reason I do my own. Feel much more comfortable knowing they are ironed Grin

I did give up ironing the bedding when pregnant though as was too much faff, and they seem to be pretty crease free

halfwitpicker · 14/01/2018 22:15

Pistfump

Do you get it out immediately after it's finished? Nice username BTW

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2018 22:15

My dryer is a very basic 7kg one, it hasn’t got moisture sensors or stuff like that, I never completely dry the stuff that might crease and just then hang it over the airer to finish. The creases all get knocked out

Barmymammy · 14/01/2018 22:15

Never iron.

Buxbaum · 14/01/2018 22:18

That's because it's all polycotton or other synthetics.

It's the curse of the dressmaker that I check the composition of pretty much every item of clothing. It's basically impossible to buy girls' pinafores on the UK high street made of anything other than a polyester / viscose / nylon blend. I've looked.

But otherwise I'm glad that we therefore agree that it isn't necessary to iron those fabrics Smile

Halie · 14/01/2018 22:18

No, it's definitely not a thing of the past. I don't iron my everyday clothes such as jeans/t-shirts as they come out of the drier unwrinkled. But work uniform gets ironed twice a week - tumble drier/hanging doesn't take out the creases at all. School uniforms with pleated skirts definitely need ironing too.

yorkshireyummymummy · 14/01/2018 22:18

A580
No I’m not wrong.
You might not agree or like my comment but that does not make it wrong.

BlackPeppercorn · 14/01/2018 22:19

I iron.
Not towels, bed linens, or socks. Or anything that will stretch out the creases when it's put on (Lycra leggings etc). Pants and pyjamas are folded first then have the iron plonked on for 3 seconds.
Mostly on a Sunday morning, I watch telly while I do it, or I can look out into the garden where DH is going round doing the poo-picking (two large dogs). I think I have the better part of the bargain.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/01/2018 22:20

“How many hours of her life did she used to waste ironing?”

But ironing isn’t wasted time for me. I watch something I have recorded while I am doing it. The only difference is that I am standing next to an ironing board rather than sitting on the settee. I iron because IMO my clothes look better when they have been ironed. I only iron necessary stuff though. It amounts to about an hour a week.

I didn’t know that either nickyschof

I find it soothing as well Freddie

“mine get a blow on the line outside”

Mine do when I can. Nothing dries outside at this time of year where I live. The tumble dryer gets used a lot just now.

Kimmyx · 14/01/2018 22:22

I absolutely hate ironing but mine and my oh work clothes need done, so I make sure we split it 50/50 as I can’t stand slaving over an iron all day.

I find watching greys anatomy helps or finding a good box set to get you through it.

Ironing sucks I’m so jealous of everyone who has a tumble dryer. I hang all my clothes up in a haste so they alwaysss need ironed. It’s the worst chore I think

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/01/2018 22:23

if you saw my DD going to school tomorrow morning in her uniform with its sharp pleats and perfect collar you would not be able to tell that I had not ironed a scrap of it

Genuine question - how do you get a sharp crease without ironing?

Hanging and drying clothes strategically can achieve a lot, I agree, but I don't get how you achieve the sharp creases.

BackforGood · 14/01/2018 22:25

Those frothing about dcs going to school without their uniforms ironed.... I started teaching 30 years ago. I can, hand on heart say it has never, ever crossed my mind, when looking at a child, that their uniform has / hasn't been ironed. I've come across neglected children (far too frequently, sadly), and I've obviously come across hundreds of dc from loving homes, and yes, I've noticed their manners, their behaviour, their emotional state, their academic abilities, their attitudes and all sorts of n, but I could never tell you who had their uniform ironed before it was worn. Apart from anything else - like the fact it isn't important - most dc will come into school wearing a jumper anyway, so, by the time you see their shirt (if you do) it has already got a bit crumpled by the jumper on top. Confused

numbereightyone · 14/01/2018 22:26

I don't enjoy ironing but I do it every week out of necessity. I put something decent on the TV or radio and just get on with it.

Wdigin2this · 14/01/2018 22:26

I wash everything, dry it, shake it out and put it on a hanger in the wardrobe. When I want to wear it, I iron it.......end of!

AdoraBell · 14/01/2018 22:26

Sometimes I iron. School uniforms always and my things, if I can be bothered with that. DH does his own. DDs know how to use the iron but chose not to. They are old enough to make the decision and do their own ironing.

Snowbelled · 14/01/2018 22:26

I never Iron. Mainly because I have far better things to do with my time.
