The only time I find myself reaching for the iron these days is if someone is going to a wedding and a shirt, or outfit needs ironing. Or if one of us is going for an interview.
Otherwise, I'm careful how I wash and hang things. No creases. Job done.
I don't have an 'ironing basket' and never have a pile of ironing to get through every week.

Am I slovenly? or what?
My mother is a slave to the iron and spend hours and hours every week wading through a pile of ironing. Whereas I don't see the point. Life's too short. I've worked it out my mother spends, on average, 12 hours a week Ironing!

Do you iron?
Or not?

(Obviously if your job entails having an ironed shirt Monday to Friday, exceptions are made)

I'm too old to get away with wearing wrinkled clothing any more.

BrollyDolly · 14/01/2018 21:25

I do like to do the ironing! I must say that I would hate to go out in something even slightly creased.

I have 6mo DD and it's mostly her things that need ironing. Her vests, baby gros and normal clothes. At the moment it's very quick to do as they are so small!

I always iron jeans, and some tops that are creased after drying. I wear a lot of leggings at the moment so these don't need to be done.

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 14/01/2018 21:25

I last ironed 18 months ago when I was pregnant and washing and putting away all the baby clothes I had bought. DP has one white shirt for weddings and funerals that gets ironed. That's it.

I wash, spin, give each item a brisk shake and hang outside so the moorland galebreeze blows through it and then fold as I pick it in. No ironing neeeded.

Lana1234 · 14/01/2018 21:26

I don't iron and neither do most my family and mates. Unless it's shirts and the like. Maybe we're all just scruffs Grin I dont mind it all tho, kinda like ironing I find it relaxing

kaitlinktm · 14/01/2018 21:26

I've hardly ironed a thing since 1980.

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2018 21:26

I have never had thrush in my life

LoniceraJaponica · 14/01/2018 21:27

Oh yes. I watch something good while I iron. That's why it isn't a chore.

KimchiLaLa · 14/01/2018 21:27

Yes I iron. Not everything - we do the laundry then sort through it all. We don't iron baby clothes, underwear, or pyjamas that are crease free. DH does his shirts and I do t-shirts that have been creased in the dryer.

pastabakewithcheese · 14/01/2018 21:29

Your DM sounds like mine OP Smile I grew up being taught how to iron and then was given own pile of clothes and my siblings pile of clothes to iron. A lot of time wasted....I don't ever iron now! I used to be given everything to iron including vests and nighties

WhooooAmI24601 · 14/01/2018 21:30

I iron the bare minimum - children's school shirts, my blouses for school and DH's work shirts. Everything else is folded nicely (by me) and then thrown into wardrobes/drawers by the DC anyway so it'd be a waste of time ironing it.

CurlsandCurves · 14/01/2018 21:30

I don’t get how tumble drying means no ironing required, as some have said on here. I tumble dry stuff, it still comes out creased and needs ironing.

I don’t mind ironing, DH is a tradesman so his stuff doesn’t need it, just mine and the kids. Takes 1-2 hours per week I’d say. Gives me chance to catch up on stuff I’ve recorded while I do it.

Oblomov18 · 14/01/2018 21:30

I iron a lot. All of dh's work shirts. All of ds's school shirts. Plus a lot more.

Mcakes · 14/01/2018 21:31

I never iron my clothes because it is unnecessary and such a bloody waste of time. I also don't care if others notice and judge. It's just not important to me.
The only things that get ironed in our house are DP's work shirts (he does his own) and, oddly, all bedding, including sheets. I LOVE the feeling of cool, crisp, freshly ironed cotton sheets and think that it's worth the effort. No judgement on others' bedding choices though. The sheets thing is purely a personal preference.

stickytoffeevodka · 14/01/2018 21:31

What the bleeding hell is the point in ironing something for a BABY? They're just going to get wee, poo, vomit or food down it so why bother?!

LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2018 21:32

Exactly what I was thinking

TheRebel · 14/01/2018 21:34

All DHs shirts are non iron and get hung up straight out of the dryer, otherwise I’m careful to only buy clothes that don’t need ironing. Life’s too short to spend time ironing!

Hear hear.
My Dm used to iron 3 x a week, spending 2 hours at a time.
How many hours of her life did she used to waste ironing?

It horrifies me. I would rather spend that time taking my children to the park or the beach or anywhere.
~Still, we're all different.

I do. Clothes look so much better ironed.

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2018 21:42

Overloading the dryer causes creasing, when I dry I put the stuff that looks like it might crease in first and part dry and hang, then shove all the socks, sportswear, other non creasing type things in together on a different drying load.

TattyCat · 14/01/2018 21:42

My face needs ironing. Can I iron that?

Nannyplumssillyoldelf · 14/01/2018 21:42

I iron Ds's school uniform and my work uniform and that is all.

TattyCat · 14/01/2018 21:42

My face needs ironing.

Sallystyle · 14/01/2018 21:43

I only iron school uniform. Well, the girl's dresses and my son's trousers.

Orrery · 14/01/2018 21:44

Ironing just does not feature in my 'to do list' each week - I admit some things like bedding and towels would probably be much nicer after being washed if I did! Other than that, none of us wears clothes than need ironing - although eldest is starting school this year, so I may have to revisit my list.

My Mum is of the 'got a pile of ironing to do' each week brigade, but she is forever complaining about it. I've told her to just not do it, but she looks at me as if I'm some kind of new age hippy!

I like my wrinkles!
