to wonder why the "fake look" is so popular?

Obviously light-hearted and I fully appreciate that people have different tastes and like different things. Apologies if you feel offended by this post.

However.

Every time I turn the TV on, it seems like the prevailing beauty standard is what I heard to be called "the fake look": fake tan, fake lashes, fake eyebrows, fake hair, fake nails and often times some fake features due to plastic surgery. It seems like these beauty interventions are meant to look obviously fake and very easy to spot.

Many of these women truly look fake as they resemble plastic dolls, but usually not in a flattering way!

I wonder why the current ruling beauty ideal implies so much "fakeness". Of course women have always spent time and money trying to improve their appearance to a certain degree, but I feel like this is a whole new level Confused

What do you think the popularity of this "fake look" tells about our society? Do you reckon the trend will go away?

Can I ask something Blush

Is 'contouring' that thing where girls are painting orange/metallic stripes on their cheeks? I've been trying to figure out why dn and her friends have started doing that.

I felt it would be rude to ask...

FreshHerbs · 13/01/2018 23:14

I have a friend who had her tits done 10 years ago, she needs them doing again but can't afford it now, her self esteem is blown to pieces and she now admits she wishes she never messed with her body as nothing really was wrong in the first place.
Most women and men who go down this fake/surgical look don't realise many treatments need upgrading again every so often, they end up going to cheap alternative places and end up looking botched. I see it on a daily basis women with shitty hair extensions, shitty acrylic nails, massive blow job lips, wonky tits, orange foundation, eyebrows that are tattooed on,eyelashes so long they can't even see,u name it. They are basically pissing their money away to look like shit. Most of these women u can tell would look fantastic in a more natural way.

squoosh · 13/01/2018 23:17

Yes. that's it SadKitty. It's supposed to be buffed in to create the illusion of a gentle shadow under the cheekbone but some them have obviously thought 'fuck it, let's just paint stripes on our faces instead'.

FaithEverPresent · 13/01/2018 23:21

Yes SadKitty. It looks truly bizarre in real life but looks great in photos Hmm but given that’s how the kids of today present themselves (it hasn’t happened until you’ve uploaded it to Instagram!) that’s the trend.

I love my hairdresser, she is my age (literally a year younger!). Her junior is half my age (36/18) and makes me feel ancient. Yesterday I was there and she said she arrives at work an hour early just to do her makeup. Now I am a working Mum, so standards have slipped somewhat from the ‘good old days’ (which was a very grunge look with black eye shadow and kohl liner but pale lips!) but I still throw on a bit of slap if I go out. We discovered I spend less time on my makeup as a whole than she does just on her foundation. She then tried to claim her face was the same colour as her hand. Nope!

Also agree about this trend for massive eyebrows, why? I’ve spent 20 years trying tame mine into submission and now everyone is maximising them?

bingbongnoise · 13/01/2018 23:24

That was make up @squoosh (On Dusty.) And yeah maybefalse eyelashes and maybe a wig.... BUT her face wasn't fucked up and distorted and bloated and full of botox and fillers and collagen.

There is no comparison.

SadKitty86 · 13/01/2018 23:25

It looks a bit bizarre but they seem struck with it Grin

I wonder if my dm thought that when I first started wearing hair mascara and glitter eye shadow!

bingbongnoise · 13/01/2018 23:25

Same message to @temptress It's only make up and wigs. No comparison to fucking up your face with plastic surgery. Surely people are intelligent enough to realise that the two things are completely different???

squoosh · 13/01/2018 23:28

Calm down. People are merely pointing out that the au naturel look hasn't always reigned supreme.

Are you intelligent enough to take that on board?

Ratinthehat · 13/01/2018 23:29

I've just been thinking about this if the tables do turn what will happen to all these people with their fake lips, bum implants ect? Will the surgeons be making even more money trying to reverse these looks?

It's nothing like past fads as they are changing your face and some times doing damage.

squoosh · 13/01/2018 23:31

Will the surgeons be making even more money trying to reverse these looks?

Well duh, of course! See also; tattoos.

LegallyBrunet · 14/01/2018 00:48

I'm in my early twenties and don't use any make up at all, I don't like it and thankfully my boyfriend prefers 'natural beauty'. The most I do is dye my hair dark purple and straighten it which I can't really not do otherwise it just looks a mess as I have naturally untameable hair. My youngest sister is 14 and goes out everywhere caked in makeup, straightens her already straight hair, colours her eyebrows in (she's blonde ffs) and last night made an absolute mess of fake tanning herself. I honestly can't tell her and her friends apart.

Purple567895678956789 · 14/01/2018 00:55

I think a lot of it is to do with surgery and social media.

There are surgeries now that didn’t exist 15 years ago: brazilian butt lift, bum implants. Etc. Fillers are also very popular.

I know some people who have done these things and look nice, very subtle. Other people look batshit - add the huge slug eyebrows into the equation and it’s curtains to be honest.

People are trying to replicate edited and filtered images from snapchat and instagram in real life - it doesn’t seem to look great.

Purple567895678956789 · 14/01/2018 01:00

Talking of bum implants (just googled out of morbid curiosity) - apparently they make a cut in your glute muscles to get the implants in. Possible risks include nerve damage. But what happens when you’re older? Will people who have them be able to hold them up? I wonder if surgeons tell girls they could have problems with arthritis etc later in life.

starzig · 14/01/2018 01:20

It's the natural look I don't get. I don't want to look like I am wearing make up so I will cake my face in a tonne of make up.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 14/01/2018 01:25

I see loads of people in their 20s with a face full of plastic. If they're putting all that crap into their faces in their 20s what the fuck are they going to look like in 20 years? Confused

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 14/01/2018 01:28

But to be fair Legally, I'm naturally blonde with naturally dark brows. So I would never think it strange to see light hair & dark brows.

FabalaTheGreenGirl · 14/01/2018 01:30

The trend will pass, but I agree that fake look is an odd thing. I find it odd because it's so uniform - so many women try that weird contouring/strobing makeup look in conjunction with giant lashes and hair extensions and they all look so similar. It's almost like a generic celebrity mask - a bunch of features which when put together signal 'This = Societal Standards Of Hot'.

I wear a shit-ton of makeup on a daily basis but I still feel undertone by comparison.

Ladiva1971 · 14/01/2018 01:38

I had a Facelift last January and it was the best thing I have done for myself, it gave me more confidence than I had and I don't regret it for a second.

BitOfFun · 14/01/2018 01:39

I drove past a beauty salon a few months ago which was advertising fake tan, acrylic nails, eyelash extensions, full body waxing, teeth whitening, and Botox.

The name? Natural Woman Grin

Purple567895678956789 · 14/01/2018 01:41

@ladiva facelift is different to the fake look - for most people it’s a way to restore things to look younger, not fake. Totally different to lugging a gigantic arse around and having a stripey face.

Ladiva1971 · 14/01/2018 01:44

HAHA true that Purple567895678956789 I for 1 am not into the wossit fake/ fake brows / lashes/ and pout etc

squoosh · 14/01/2018 01:47

Is a facelift different to the fake look? 🤔

A stripey face is washed off at the end of the night...

squoosh · 14/01/2018 01:47

And why is face surgery okay but arse surgery isn't?

LemonysSnicket · 14/01/2018 01:48

It looks good in pictures and women, now more than ever, are horrifically insecure about their looks.

Purple567895678956789 · 14/01/2018 01:49

@ladiva 😊
