Medical conditions aside.

We moan about being fat but it's never enough to really change.

I'm 5 stone overweight and already the NYE goal is gone.

I dont know. I suspect most of it is lack of willpower or other mental health issues associated with eating.
I know, i am that person.
With fags, you can avoid or not buy.
With booze, ditto.
With food, you HAVE to buy it. Even if your on a diet, your family need food bought and prepared. So it's everywhere.
You're always exposed to it.
Also, as someone said, it offers a constant in a tumultuous world which is ever changing.
Im not lazy. I run 2.7 miles 5 x weekly and walk 6 miles the rest of the week.
Done this for a year. Still have a fat arse, chunky thighs, a fat belly with hernia from pregnancy 11 years ago.

I just wonder if the losing weight too fast actually produces gallstones , or whether the gallstones were already there and the rapid weight loss somehow precipitates the symptoms iyswim ? Being very fat , over 40 and female , I already tick a fair few boxes for their formation Sad

frumpety · 14/01/2018 09:17

Namechanger when you say you gave up sugar , do you mean carbs as well or just refined sugar such as sweets/biscuits and chocolate ?

FaithEverPresent · 14/01/2018 09:32

namechanger I think it varies. When I’m eating whatever, huge proportion of my snacks come from refined sugar sources. By giving it up in the week, I definitely feel better. Some people are more takeaways and crisps, they would lose weight from cutting them out.

LaughingLlama · 14/01/2018 09:41

Because there are only 3 or 4 rows you can walk down in a supermarket if dieting/clean eating. Fruit n Veg, Fish, Meat and dairy. Every other aisle contains ruinous food to tempt us away from living on grilled chicken and veggies for the rest of our lives.

Seriously- I do know you can use items from other aisle to whip up delicious healthy meals but by sticking to those 4 aisles I go down does keep me away from convenient or tempting items that aren't good.

Our society and shops are 80% full of shit we should only eat once in a blue moon as a treat and 20% of healthy staples.

LadyBunnysWig · 14/01/2018 09:41

I feel sad that I'm fat, eating makes me happy, so I eat to feel happy then I'm sad that I'm fat

juliesaway · 14/01/2018 09:46

Because they make more money selling cheap to produce, processed, colourful packeted shit than good food.

juliesaway · 14/01/2018 09:47

I don’t even eat breakfast cereals and would never give me kids them. Just sugary processed junk marketed as healthy. Just a lie.

“I gave up sugar for 2 years, I didn't lose any weight at all. I don't think sugar has much to do with weight loss.“

Well if you gave up sugar but ate lots of crisps, cheese and wine, of course you won’t lose weight.

There has to be a balance.

In general you can give up any food and lose weight. So give up fat and you’ll lose weight as long as you don’t overeat.
Give up sugar and you’ll lose weight as long as you don’t overeat. Same with Carbs.

But you don’t have to give up a whole food group.

Most thin people who stay slim, eat a balanced diet, with a little of what they fancy.

Eat like a thin person for 6 months and the vast majority of people WILL lose weight.

frumpety · 14/01/2018 10:02

I think giving up sugar must be very difficult to do successfully , it is in so many things , including fruit and vegetables , packet of plain crisps , yep sugar in those too , bread another yes to the sugar , pasta , yes again , tinned tomatoes , oh look sugar , spinach also contains sugar , who knew ? Being a bit obtuse , realise that there is a difference between naturally occurring sugar in fruit and veg and refined sugar added to just about everything else .

FireCracker2 · 14/01/2018 10:07

The secret for me was overcoming tiredness and apathy .I ditched the scales and forget about calories and focussing on 1) variety and 2) eating what I thought looked nutritional (but wasn't too strict).Soon I had lots more energy and aimed for a daily walk After a while I noticed my shape was changing for the better.
It has been a gradual process

Self denial and diets don't work

.Poor diet makes you feel tired and apathetic, good nutrition makes you feel energetic and positive.

lurkingnotlurking · 14/01/2018 10:09

I think the op is writing an article.

frumpety · 14/01/2018 10:18

What makes you think that Lurking ?

lurkingnotlurking · 14/01/2018 10:19

The op said so little at the start to get us all talking and hasn't been back yet.

CiderwithBuda · 14/01/2018 10:20

Well this thread has shown that there are many reasons. We are all different. We all have our own issues, body responses, mental responses, coping mechanisms.

I'm 53. 15 stone 9 last week. I have in the past done low carb, WW (lost 30 lbs about five years ago - put most of it back) SW (more than once), etc etc etc. Every January I swear this year will be the one I lose the weight. I've been on numerous weight loss threads on here. I'm so bloody tired of it. Totally lacking in motivation at the moment to start yet again. Like us all I want fast results. But to lose four stone which s the minimum I want to lose it will take a long time. I know that. And it's the long time which is hard. It's boring.

I tend to be all or nothing. Either completely on plan or completely off. No in between. Currently off! Drinking too much which is my main issue.

I can eat very well day to day. Porridge for breakfast, home made soup for lunch, healthy snack, healthy dinner. But then I have wine.

I also have a teen DS who is a very fussy eater. And a DH who would like us all to eat the same rather than separate meals. But finding things we will all eat is hard. I can obviously eat separately and tweak stuff which I do but I get so fed up with it all.

I'm just so tired of it all.

feelingdizzy · 14/01/2018 10:35

I've must have lost and gained 200 pounds in total over the last 20 years of dieting.
I am pretty fit ,run x3 a week .Eat pretty healthily, but eat too much.
I have a very hectic life demanding job, single parent, caring responsibilities I am knackered most of the time, and use food as a boost. I have relaxed about losing weight, and tried to be healthier about my relationship to food .Seems to be working a bit,but like many of us I have so many calls on my time, eating mindfully seems like another bloody thing to do.

NameChanger22 · 14/01/2018 11:48

Well if you gave up sugar but ate lots of crisps, cheese and wine, of course you won’t lose weight.

I didn't drink any wine as I don't drink, or eat many crisps. I dd eat some cheese because life without cheese is a life not lived.

I'm sick and tired of the bleating on Mumsnet - "I'm thin - why isn't everyone? They all have no willpower, must be eating crap and never doing any exercise"' '"I'm rich, why isn't everyone? - they must be all stupid, lazy and have no aspirations". "You should all be rich and thin like meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee," This is what it sounds like.

Chienrouge · 14/01/2018 12:01

I think the point NameChanger22 was just that if you cut out sugar but still overeat in general, of course you won’t lose weight.

HunterofStars · 14/01/2018 16:45

I've done nearly every diet going, WW, SW, Dukan, Slim Fast etc and they all didn't work. But looking back, I wasn't in the right place mentally for it to succeed. Although I did succeed at cutting out sugar from tea and coffee.

However this year I've been working on self love and have been eating regular meals with one snack of fruit in the afternoon instead of just missing meals and snacking on junk and fizzy drinks.

I review it on a weekly basis and this week I have decided to cut down on fizzy drinks with meals and just have one a day.

What has worked for me so far is writing a list when I go shopping and just sticking to the aisles I need and not going shopping when hungry.

I've also been putting stuff in the slow cooker every morning as I prefer to cook in one pan.

I noticed last night that I have lost 4lbs in 2 weeks and my legs look thinner.

Jaygee61 · 14/01/2018 17:08

I’ve been cutting back my portion sizes, e.g saving half my usual portion of e.g chilli and having it for lunch the following day, generally eating healthy, reducing alcohol (don’t drink that much to start with) and have put on 1lb this week. I could do with losing a stone. I did slim down to 8.5 stone on WW about five years ago but I’m back up to just over 10 now. 5ft 1 in tall. I really don’t want to do WW again but nothing else seems to work with actually getting the weight off. I hav3 an underactive thyroid which doesn’t help.

HelenaDove · 14/01/2018 17:13

Bluntness ppl wont always lose two pounds a week every week though. You cant help it if your body just wont do it Even when i was coming down from 21 stone i got stuck at 17 stone 9 for 3 weeks while my body adjusted. It just doesnt happen the way you describe even for a big person.

This is why the second time i didnt set a goal. I knew it would take years rather than months.

I was told by a few medical professionals that fast weight loss is dangerous Isnt it funny how many on here are so ready to believe the NHS when they warn about obesity but not so ready to believe them when they warn against losing it too fast. Just goes to show that many will believe what it suits them to believe.

Lloyd45 · 14/01/2018 17:16

The most I have ever weighed is 10st accept when pregnant. I am 5'4. I do think it is genetic but if I get over 9st 10 I I cut back, I also walk at least a mile every day. I am 48, a size 12, I have cellulite and no where near perfect but feel healthy and semi fit, sometimes it's accepting this is who you are, not perfect but not to bad.

NameChanger22 · 14/01/2018 17:21

I'm also a size 12 to 14. It is very difficult for me to be a different size than this. When I diet I hardly lose any weight. When I eat lots I hardly gain weight. I'm far happier just accepting this is what I'm supposed to be.

HelenaDove · 14/01/2018 17:30

YY Name Im a 14 but i was a 28. Ive done enough and if anyone else dosent like it they can fuck off.

TalkinPeace · 14/01/2018 17:48

Helena
You are absolutely right in your assessment that people want a magic bullet because they do not want to admit that losing a lot of weight will involve eating a lot less for a long time and thus adjusting the hunger response

Even more shockingly they seem to want to go back to eating piles of shit after losing the weight and then seem surprised that the weight piles back on.

They talk about having to be a on a diet forever
when actually all they are chaging to is eating what their body can cope with forever
