To hate Autism

EnglishRose1320 · 13/01/2018 15:19

I know I might well be but today I am done with it. I am sick and tired of everyone telling me it brings so much joy, a different way of thinking, unique gifts etc. I'd happily swap my son's autism, lose the high IQ, the quirky traits, have an average child in a heartbeat because nothing is worth the aniexty, the depression, the self harming, the house desteoying, the life destroying that we have to deal with. I don't see Autism as a blessing and I don't know that I ever will.

@expatinscotland that’s awful. I can’t understand why LAs won’t put support in place, it’s neglectful not to!

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 16:52

They don't have the money and they have big problems recruiting. Nope, cannot move as in a council flat and can't get another one. So that's that.

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 16:54

Got the diagnosis about 3 years ago, given a bunch of leaflets and sent on our way. School has had budget cut. There's no ed psych in the entire council. It's a joke but there's really no workround as no way we can move and no money to get any private help - which would also cost a bomb to access as we are rural.

Notreallyarsed · 15/01/2018 16:59

Are there any TAs in school or have they been cut too? I’m sorry (fwiw) that you’ve got such a lack of support.

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 17:03

Think there's one or two left in DS's entire primary school. It's a joke. I wouldn't know what support is because I've never had any. What exactly is this support network people speak off? My family lives abroad and DH's are about 90 miles away and in terrible health.

Notreallyarsed · 15/01/2018 17:04

I don’t know what to say expat, I wish I had the answers.

Sirzy · 15/01/2018 17:31

That’s awful expat. Surely the lack of ed psych can’t be lawful at the least because presumably without it nobody is getting EHCP?

Notreallyarsed · 15/01/2018 17:33

That’s a good point Sirzy, does your child have a CSP expat?

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 17:43

What is a CSP? And no, it's not unlawful, they simply cannot recruit and keep an ed psych and haven't been able to for years, you can't force people to do the job. I'm resigned to just cracking on as best we can. This is just how it is.

Want2bSupermum · 15/01/2018 17:48

expat There are ways to move. I know there is available council housing in the NW. Does anyone know here if there are well resourced areas?

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 17:54

Want2, no, there are really not in our case. We have no money, I mean, zero. No way to save any as none spare and no way to borrow any. We have no desire to move countries, either. It's not the end of the world, we just chunter on.

Want2bSupermum · 15/01/2018 18:10

There are grants available to cover the cost of moving. They don't need to be paid back. When you say you don't want to move countries would a move to the U.K. be too far?

Want2bSupermum · 15/01/2018 18:10

Sorry England not U.K.!!!!

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 18:13

'There are grants available to cover the cost of moving. '

There haven't been these in most councils in a long time. Budgets have been cut, cut, cut, cut. Seriously, you have to live here to truly understand how much things have changed in the past 10 years. And you need to have a reason to move to another council house, beyond fancying it. And no, we don't want to move to England. DD2 has already begun secondary school. We have no money to move. There are no grants to do so. Get real!

Want2bSupermum · 15/01/2018 18:17

No they still have these grants. I processed a new tenant in early Jan who was given one. They were moving to a bigger unit and it was a generous grant that does not need to be repaid.

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 18:19

Specific to that council, then. Plenty of them have no grants. All loans. We don't want to move to England anyway so that is a moot point. Or to a council that have moved to UC.

Want2bSupermum · 15/01/2018 18:19

When I say generous it was £2500. That was to cover new appliances and floor coverings. I put them in a unit with floor coverings so they could have money left over to cover the cost of movers. They couldn't move themselves. They also needed some new furniture for their young children.

expatinscotland · 15/01/2018 18:20

That's good. But again, we do not want to move countries. And have no connection to do so.

Notreallyarsed · 15/01/2018 18:36

www.familyfund.org.uk/scotland

expat have you used the family fund before? They can offer financial help towards things for the house or holidays and stuff if that’s any use to you?

KateGrey · 16/01/2018 12:42

Expat please make sure you’re getting all the benefits you should like DLA and carers.

We’re in Essex. Support is so so. School very difficult but both dc have ft 1:1 support and ehcps. The issue is our school and not allowing the support their is to be allowed in.

Wish me luck. DD destroyed the classroom this morning. The school have called an emergency meeting. Run out of work to get to school. Have a board meeting at 2pm. As a SEN parent of course I worked late last night to finish my pieces and wrote speaking points out so someone could fill in for me. No wonder I'm exhausted.
