To be scared of Sepsis?

It seems to be in the news so much that people are dying from this and it happens without people realising.

Is it a new thing? I don't remember hearing about it much before, but that might just be the increased power of social media/news apps etc.

I might stop reading the news. It's so depressing.

oohloolalala I forgot to say how sorry that this happened to your mother. The suddenness of it all is shocking. My sons were very cross with us for not going to Drs earlier, but hindsight is a great thing.

lougle · 12/01/2018 11:42

StaggeringOn don't be embarrassed, and your DH has nothing to be embarrassed about, either. A GP died recently, because he didn't recognise his own sepsis. He felt ill, felt cold, and went to bed. We are taught to carry on regardless.

I work in ICU, and went to work this week (non-clinical now, used to be clinical) even though I knew I was ill. I 'couldn't' phone in sick, because I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. But the fact that I couldn't take 4 away from 6 even with my fingers was probably a sign that I really was unwell. I went home after and went to bed. People are stupid. We care for other people and flog ourselves.

Really sorry to hear about everyone affected by sepsis. I have no personal experience but this thread has opened my eyes as to what to look for- and to treat any cuts with tcp and the like. I normally do, but I will be even more vigilant in future.

PancakeInMaBelly · 12/01/2018 12:56

staggeringon there are awareness vids on youtube of nurses who didnt recognise sepsis in their own family members 😔 its nothing to be ashamed of sometimes its hard for clinical staff who are used to having machines and numbers and results to go on to pick up stuff at home with no fancy kit x

StaggeringOn · 12/01/2018 13:45

lougle, PancakeInMaBelly thanks for your kind words. I just didn’t realise my whole body was shutting down (though obviously concerned by that time re chest infection) and I know that I’m very lucky to get better.

YouBoggleMyMind · 12/01/2018 22:32

Thank you ThanksThanksThanks my baby boy has had heart surgery to remove the infection on his heart and survived. He's doing better and we hope on an upward turn. It's been the worst 2 weeks of my life.

PancakeInMaBelly · 12/01/2018 22:54

Sounds positive Flowers

CaledonianQueen · 13/01/2018 02:38

So many hugs YouBoggle, that sounds terrifying! I hope that your tiny boy is recovering well and that the past two weeks become an awful but distant memory.Flowers

Boggle Thanks

I'm a first aider at work - we were taught to clean scrapes and cuts and have antiseptic wipes for the job.

OneMoreOne · 18/01/2018 12:09

Gallon I don't even know what to say Thanks

OneMoreOne · 18/01/2018 12:21

The balance seems hard. With small cuts etc I rinse well with water and cover as have heard that too much antibacterial/disinfectant can be bad.

Cuts from gardening seem to be a more frequent cause. I assume it's because there are more bacteria around that environment...

HOPHIPHOPPILY · 18/01/2018 12:34

itused interesting. According to the NHS one should:

Clean the wound under running tap water, saline (a salt water solution) or use an alcohol-free wipe, gauze pad or soft cloth, but do not use antiseptic, because it may damage the skin.

The NHS don't seem to rate antiseptic wipes. Not sure what's best and why is saline good?
