WIBU to ask them to wait for 4 days

NC for this because I'm embarrassed.

Booked a holiday cottage for March before Christmas and paid 1/3 as deposit. The balance is due 6 weeks before which is 27th Jan as it turns out.

I don't think my brain registered that date when I booked it. I've had one biggish unexpected expense this month, more than the balance will be.

My financial situation is very tight and I never have spare money so this has left me in the situation where I'm unable to pay the balance on 27th.

WIBU to ask the holiday company if I could pay on 31st? For info it's not a massive holiday company but it's not booked directly with the owner either.

I suppose I'm worried that if I ring and ask they will say no and I will also lose the deposit.
(No one I can borrow off unfortunately).

Could you post them ac cheque on that date?

Aaaaaarrrghmoney · 11/01/2018 15:26

No cheque book Sad but good idea if I had!

27th is a Saturday. Send them a cheque that won't arrive until the 31st.

etap · 11/01/2018 15:26

(x-posted, sorry)

TeenTimesTwo · 11/01/2018 15:27

Can you put it on credit card and then pay off in full when bill comes?

stickytoffeevodka · 11/01/2018 15:28

Do you have a credit card you could use? Or you could offer to pay in instalments?

Aaaaaarrrghmoney · 11/01/2018 15:33

Credit card is not in a position to be used.
I did wonder about offering half of the balance and paying the rest on 31st.

Call them tell them the situation offer to pay the full ballance end of the month it’s only a few days.

If they aren’t happy offer to pay part by their deadline and rest end of month.

Hopefully they’ll understand.

HopefulForToday · 11/01/2018 15:37

In your specific situation op, I would ask if it was possible.

If they said no, I'd try and raise the shortfall by selling stuff if I could, old clothes etc.

If that wasn't possible and it was only for four days, I would get a payday loan. I would never advise someone genuinely struggling with debt to use PD loans but they do have their place, for situations such as this.

TheCrossKeys · 11/01/2018 15:38

Ring the company/owner, whoever you rented it from, and tell them that you can't pay on the 27th but can pay on the 31st. Most holiday places will allow a few days grace before cancelling but it's best to be upfront about it. I once couldn't pay my holiday balance as my debit card was lost and I was waiting on the replacement, when I rang the holiday company they said people oftenmoxtheir dates up so they allow seven days from the payment deadline before they go ahead and cancel it.

Trinity66 · 11/01/2018 15:38

I reckon if you phoned them and asked if you could pay 4 days late because you're not getting paid till then they'd be fine with it

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/01/2018 15:43

You have time to request a cheque book from your bank btw.

Although I do agree the best thing is to be upfront, say you need until the end of the month and is there anything they can do?

If it wasn’t an option to sell a bunch of stuff, pawn it, borrow etc then I would probably use a payday loan assuming you’re not looking to get a mortgage in less than 6 years.

Megs4x3 · 11/01/2018 15:48

Try asking them first. It won't close any doors if they say no and it's a perfect solution if they say yes. I'd be surprised if they say no to be honest, especially if you can offer part payment. Ask and see and worry about what to do if they say no when they actually say it. :-)

Figrollsnotfatrolls · 11/01/2018 15:49

Bank can issue a cheque as a one off.

juddyrockingcloggs · 11/01/2018 15:51

Which holiday company OP?

BestestBrownies · 11/01/2018 15:52

Maybe if your financial position is so tight, you should prioritise building up a buffer in savings for unexpected/emergency costs before spending on holidays?

Missonihoni · 11/01/2018 15:57

Your living pay check to pay check month by month yet your booking a cottage holiday.

Pay by paypal on the 27th. I just booked flights using paypal and the money didn't come out of my bank for 5 days

arethereanyleftatall · 11/01/2018 16:00

I would borrow to pay it, and pay immediately back four days later.

I say that because as a business owner,100% of the time I have had a similar type request, I've been stung. I won't do anything outside my ts and cs any more and who lent want to be asked to.,

Aaaaaarrrghmoney · 11/01/2018 16:00

juddy it's called Cottages in Northumberland.

Looks like the best idea is to be honest with them and hope they can be a bit flexible.

Please don’t do this. If it’s requested from your bank before the money is in you’ll get charged.

Just call them OP, it’ll probably be fine.
Most people know that January can be tight and it’s only 4 days. Much better to call in advance and explain.

Aaaaaarrrghmoney · 11/01/2018 16:03

Yes you're right about my spending habits. I am taking steps to address this, which is one of the reasons I have so little extra cash - most is being used to sort myself out after splitting up with exP.
It's my first holiday for about 5 years.

Beamur · 11/01/2018 16:08

I'd contact the company, explain you've had an unexpected expense this month but could pay on the 31st.

I couldn't live like this.

You need to learn to budget and only buy what you can afford.
