H&M mother has said for people to 'get over it'

WomanEmpire · 11/01/2018 14:28

Apparently she has said on Facebook it's people 'crying wolf' and to 'get over it'

Wdyt?

I personally think H&M are counting their lucky stars and have sort of preyed on her, (this is very presumptuous, so I am prepared to be shot down) knowing that perhaps as someone who is native Nigerian and moved to Sweden (I think relatively recently, but again pull me up on this if I'm incorrect) might not be quite as aware of the racism that incurs in the US/UK, as those who live in these countries and wouldn't think to second guess in a shoot, because you'd trust such a popular retailer to not have racist slurs put on a jumper and modelled by a child, who could quite possibly still be called this by those idiots. Because I still can't believe that NO ONE along the process picked up on this.

I'm not saying racism doesn't occur in other countries but I have experience of those two countries.

OP posts:
bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:02

There are posters here who clearly feel thst screaming ‘racist’ is their ace in the hole. (Much like ‘transphobe’ for TRAs)

I only ever see this type of comment from people that are being racist. Hmm

bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:03

This whole thing is about racism no?! Confused

bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:04

Censorship? Another term racists use a lot.

Zarathrustra · 12/01/2018 12:04

Okay then.

Where have I...

-Defended racism.

-Been racist.

The expressions I used are commonly used. Are we meant to rewrite the language to suit a few. Bonkers

cindersrella · 12/01/2018 12:05

I agree with her! Does the boy not have the right to wear what he likes.... this is what people keep banging on about isn't it?

Zarathrustra · 12/01/2018 12:06

bummy

You’ve literally told people they don’t have the right to say they aren’t offended by the advert.

Come on. You can see why this is a problem surely?

bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:07

Read the thread @cindersrella

Zarathrustra · 12/01/2018 12:09

Given the language you’ve used bummy (in your now deleted post) I’m not sure you can lecture others about racism.

bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:11

I've said several times my issue is with people saying others have no right to say what people are offended by but you're choosing to completely ignore that for some reason.

Not people not being offended. For what it's worth I think it's fantastic that there are younger people (who aren't white) that don't know the awful connotations as it may mean we are seeing changes in attitudes.

I've repeated the same thing to you a few times now and you either aren't listening or spoiling for a fight so I'm out of this thread.

JAPAB · 12/01/2018 12:12

You think it's ok for a white person to tell a black person what they should or should not be offended by?

If disagreeing with the reasons someone gives for why they consider something offensive is one and the same as 'telling them what they should or should not be offended by' then yes. It is a free countrty. I don't think they are one and the same though.

One can be perfectly well aware of the usages racists have made of monkeys. And have no doubts that that is hurtful and damaging.

One can understand this without having to think that any association, irrespective of intent, becomes racist or offensive.

One can understand this while thinking that further attempts to infer offensiveness by trying to make a ink between another top being worn by a white child, and colonialism, might be going too far to find offence.

Not agreeing does not make one ignorant of the history.

Zarathrustra · 12/01/2018 12:12

I’m quoting you verbatim bummy

Get some rest. You sound exhausted.

bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:14

Are you fucking kidding me? You reported that post after banging on about your right to say whatever the hell you like because of freedom of speech?! The irony.

And mumsnet, really? Did you realise the context that comment was in? Have you bothered to read any of my other comments?

Tsundoku · 12/01/2018 12:15

I love Mumsnet in many ways but some of you are so out of touch (giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're a bit naive and dim rather than out and out racist pricks.)

Whenever threads like this come up (I'm especially thinking of the golliwog threads), it's clear that a large number of people have a very rigid and limited view of what racism is. Racism involves, as you say, 'out and out racist pricks'. And that's it. Those are the racists, over there. Racists take efforts to deliberately malign and offend people. Racists declare themselves as racist. They're obvious from a mile away.

This rigid definition conveniently exonerates anyone who's not a self-identified 'racist prick'. So I can still be wilfully oblivious, contemptuous and dismissive about race-related issues... but I'm not a racist, how very dare you.

I just want to explain that certain cultural/historical associations don't matter or exist.
I just want to explain how people don't really feel offended; they're just doing it for attention, or they're being silly.
I'm a super-nice inclusive non-racist person who just wants everyone to be friends so long as I don't have to listen to anything I'd rather not hear, or adjust my own language or behaviour in the tiniest of ways, or even seriously discuss making an adjustment. Nope: that's a step too far, even though I hope one day there'll be no racism (and, really, I don't even see colour!), so I'm going to concentrate my efforts on making your complaints seem as baseless and pathetic as possible.

And if you've got a problem with that, then you'd better tread carefully: I'm a super-nice supportive non-racist person and if you keep on harping on you might alienate me, losing my valuable support.

DreamyMcDreamy · 12/01/2018 12:15

If you want the world to subscribe to your demands for self censorship you’ll always be disappointed. However many posts you report.

Because it's automatically me just because you've been called out on it. If you say so. Likely that a lot of people reported, not individuals.

bummymummy77 · 12/01/2018 12:15

You're now calling me a racist? Ugh Jesus I give up! 😂

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/01/2018 12:17

@Rufustherenegadereindeer1 thanks. I'm normally good at ignoring gf's but seem to be failing today! Grin

Zarathrustra · 12/01/2018 12:19

This is identity politics through and through. The idea there isn’t an objective truth that we can reach through dialectic and investigation, but merely the ‘truths’ of different groups, and the idea that to attempt to investigate ideas is an affront to the subjective truth of this or that identity group.

If an oppressed group has a subjective truth, it has to be ‘respected’ by the oppressor group.

It’s the same ideology which allows e.g. Lilly Madigan to bully her way into leadership positions in the Labour Party.

Those who are evangalesing for this way of thinking need to consider the damage it’s doing.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/01/2018 12:19

Oh shit!!

Now it sounds like i am suggesting shooting bummy
