To ask my neighbour to not hoover after 8pm

chewiecat · 09/01/2018 21:29

New neighbours just moved in upstairs and they love a good hoover. Almost every alternate days. Not a problem usually but they are starting to do this later and later and waking DS up.

It's 9.30 pm now and she's banging and crashing around and DS is crying Sad

Wibu to ask them to refrain from hoovering after 8pm?

I am so grateful some of the posters were not my neighbours. I suppose when you are noisy yourself you can't complain about other people's noise. It sounds grim.

chewiecat · 09/01/2018 22:13

@ginandnappies love the user name Gin
The previous upstairs neighbours had 3am parties but they moved out about 8 months after DS was born which makes me hope that we got our own back in the noise department Xmas Grin

@Llangollen I know! I thought it was just considerate to not hoover after 8/9pm too! I always tried to limit my noise after a certain time

GottadoitGottadoit · 09/01/2018 22:15

Yep. And I’m generally a bit of a slattern Grin

GottadoitGottadoit · 09/01/2018 22:17

Actually I do complain if a neighbour is very noisy. I just don’t think hoovering is very noisy. Plus hoovering is not an anti social noise. It is an ‘upstanding member of the community’ type noise Grin

Llangollen · 09/01/2018 22:18

chewiecat
Even before I had children it wouldn't have occur to me to hoover at 8 or 9pm in a flat. It just doesn't feel right.

Hiphopcat · 09/01/2018 22:22

Almost every other day, just once, does not seem too much.

Half nine at night when you have neighbours in the flat below (with a baby,) is a little bit much though.

You could say something to them, but they are not really doing anything wrong.

BackforGood · 09/01/2018 22:23

I don't understand why you don't just pop round with a card to welcome them to the building. Ask them round for a glass of wine or a cuppa and get to know them. Over conversation, friendly neighbours can then mention things that would be helpful if they can find a way to compromise over.

RB68 · 09/01/2018 22:23

If you are hoovering wooden floors can be very noisy. The point is though they live above someone and it is antisocial to be hoovering too late - up to 8pm OK or if only adults downstairs then a bit later by agreement who wants to listen to hoovering when trying to hear the telly.

They won't even have thought about it I bet so a "would you mind whilst he is small not hoovering after blah as it wakes him and I am sure his wailing comes through to you" would be reasonable if no joy then landlord

PersianCatLady · 09/01/2018 22:23

When I had a flat I used the timer on my washing machine
Did you set the timer to run the washing machine when you were out of the flat??

A lot of flat leases prohibit running washing machines and dryers when no-one is in the flat due to flood and fire risks.

crazycatgal · 09/01/2018 22:24

I personally don't hoover etc after 9pm and if I did wouldn't be annoyed if someone with a young child asked me to stop, however asking people not to hoover from 8pm is unreasonable.

LadyBunnysWig · 09/01/2018 22:25

I hoover every other day. Leave for work at 7.30am and get back at 6pm. Spend the next hour playing with baby then putting him to bed. Hoover at 8pm and put a wash on.... because I'm a normal person!!
Or should I ignore my baby to keep you happy? Not wash my clothes?
9.30pm is not late I'm afraid

Missonihoni · 09/01/2018 22:27

Do the people on here who Hoover every single day Have full time jobs ? If so bravo Grin I couldn't be arsed !

AtSea1979 · 09/01/2018 22:33

You hoover once a week Shock OP I suggest you worry less about the noise and more about your DS crawling around in all that muck!

chewiecat · 09/01/2018 22:35

Ah but I mop every day! Much less noisyGrin

OP posts:
Ieatcake · 09/01/2018 22:36

Steve Allen (LBC nob jockey) was boasting that he Hoover's at 3am in his flat and I think he was serious.

It's reasonable to ask.

Ieatcake · 09/01/2018 22:37

Every other day?! Wow that's alot

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 09/01/2018 22:38

I think I must be weird then, I really worry about noise! I'm an upstairs flat and I never use hoover, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, anything like that later than 8. I think it maybe stems from living below the noisiest, nastiest person ever a few years back- his snoring kept me awake, him using the loo woke me up, loud shouting aggressive phone calls all hours, very intimidating. I really worry I annoy my downstairs neighbour, I have a creaky floor and walk very carefuly if I have to walk about at night.

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/01/2018 22:39

I used to live in a flat where my downstairs neighbor asked me not to have my alarm clock set for 7am, because it woke his son up. You can ask, OP, but in my case I very politely refused, although I did make a concerted effort to get up immediately and not put it to “snooze”. I think if you live in a flat, you have to expect a certain amount of neighbour noise.

Flisspaps · 09/01/2018 22:40

Are you sure it's hoovering and not a massive vibrator?

Viviennemary · 09/01/2018 22:41

I think it is too late to hoover at 9.30 at night or before 9 am. In flats people have to have some consideration for neighbours. Up till 8 pm is quite late enough to hoover IMHO.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 09/01/2018 22:48

Llangollen It’s a shame for you that you didn’t succeed in getting your baby to adjust to sleeping through noise.

And my DS doesn't cry all night.. just a few times at night

A few times a night is enough to piss off even the kindest of neighbours, OP.

steff13 · 09/01/2018 22:49

Do the people on here who Hoover every single day Have full time jobs.

I work 50 hours a week and have 3 kids. Plus a sheddy dog.

Winebottle · 09/01/2018 22:49

You can ask but don't expect them to listen. I was recently asked not to walk around at night because the flat below can hear it.

echt · 09/01/2018 22:58

Where I live in Australia, there are actual laws about hoovering noise, not before 7.00.a.m. or after 10.00.p.m. Monday-Friday, so I'm guessing unless you have something in the lease, you'll need the personal touch.

I am a complete slug, and only hoover when it's daylight as I can see the muck better then. So when I'm at work, it's weekends only.

Another one Shock at running washing machines/dryers when no-one's in the house.
