AIBU to not turn on heating

I have trouble with spending money on myself and for looking after myself. It's cold and I'm working from home. If the kids were here I would turn on the heating but it seems wasteful for just me. However I have a few layers and a blanket and I'm cold. Do you turn on the heating just for you.

if it took a gallon of fuel to get to work you would just do it and moan like he'll if your employer made you freeze. Keeping warm is just essential to me

DopeyDazy · 09/01/2018 15:34

hell not he'll fecking autocorrect

Eleanorsummer · 09/01/2018 15:45

I have the heating on most of the time in winter as hate being cold, plus I have reynaurds, so need to be warm.

SlothMama · 09/01/2018 15:46

Rather than putting the heating on I just use my halogen heater in my office. The sun warms my office anyway because of how small it is!

autumngold6 · 09/01/2018 16:03

If you can afford to heat your home on very cold days it's wise to do so for health reasons. A very low temperature can cause circulatory problems leading to a higher risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Elendon · 09/01/2018 16:07

Those who don't put the heating on, would die a death if they didn't have the petrol to get you from A to B or even Z.

Don't talk to me about effects on the environment.

To up keep a house yearly, it's a minimum cost of £3000 per year.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 09/01/2018 16:12

We don’t have gas central heating so if I want the heating on I have to fire up the wood burner. It’s honestly not worth the faff just for me so I just put a dressing gown on usually!

What on earth do you mean?

GhostsToMonsoon · 09/01/2018 16:30

If I am at home in the day then I don't have it on - I also don't feel I should have it on just for me - but the study isn't too cold. Kitchen is OK if I'm cooking. I do sometimes end up in bed or under the slanket. It comes on at 3:30. If I lived alone then I would probably put it in late afternoon.

@Rudgie47

Why dont people just go and sit in the public library if they cant put the heating on? You can do your work on the computers there and be warm.I'd do that rather than be freezing cold.

Because I'd have to get dressed, couldn't have a cat on my lap and wouldn't have access to constant cups of tea. On a more practical level they wouldn't have the software I use, I'd have to remember all my passwords and occasional loud swearing is generally frowned upon in libraries.

It wouldn't be a suitable place to work or be for many of us. Plus its not always can't put the heat on, but won't. My house is old and draughty and the heating is an expensive type and you have to heat the whole house or none of it. I could put the heat on, but I don't think its worth it when there is only me there. I'm fine with a hot water bottle and warm slippers and fluffy jumper.

Because the cost of the bus ticket to the few-and-far-between libraries is more than the heating would cost? Libraries always seem to come up as the answer to budget questions, and yet there are so few left now usually only open from 10-2 they are essentially gone in many places.

cathyclown · 09/01/2018 18:25

There is no way I would sit in a cold house it is just so Victorian and miserable.

But on days when I am at home all day if I feel cold the heating goes on boost for an hour, if I still feel cold another boost. Usually ok for a good while after that.

I also have one of these. Best thing since sliced bread. I know the initial investment is not cheap, but they cost pennies to run. Fantastic!

LoniceraJaponica · 09/01/2018 18:31

I absolutely refuse to be a martyr to the cold. It was -4 here yesterday morning, and there was no way I wouldn't have any heating on. Can you not have a heater just for the room you are in rather than heat the whole house?

2Cold4me · 09/01/2018 18:59

Haven't had any central heating for the last couple of years. Inside temp was often down to 5°C last winter.

I hate the cold and I have RA, which gets very painful in the cold, so last winter we ended up getting an oil fired radiator plus one like speckledust had to keep one room warm (no insulation).

Unfortunately, although this generally only kept the temp between 12 and 16°C (depending on the outside weather) sometimes it was much colder, but this added £1000 to our gas/electric bill over the 4 months we used them so I WON'T be doing that again this year, not when I'm just here on my own during the day. I hate spending money on myself, it feels wasteful.

Instead I wear layers and have a heated fleece blanket, which costs the same as having a light bulb on, so I will use that on low during the day if it gets too bad as I'm not very mobile so I really feel the cold.

I do think you get used to it as I'm now often too hot at other people's houses (probably because I've got so many layers on, lol). The temp inside here is 10°C atm, so I'm snuggled under the covers and I wear gloves pretty much all the time.

Hopefully, the heating issue will be fixed by the summer so next winter should be better. Having no heating definitely causes a lot of issues with mould and damp though.

brownelephant · 09/01/2018 19:03

yes.
and our 'work from home' policy states that the room needs to be comfortable and heated if appropriate.

glow1984 · 09/01/2018 19:03

Yes, I do it all the time, but i then turn most of our radiators off.

Because the local library has closed.
In the main city library it costs £2 a half hour, its not free.
The bus fare is nearly £4 and yes its too far to walk.
There arent enough computers there for everyone. You have to book one.

2Cold4me · 09/01/2018 19:11

I bought the heated fleece blanket from Aldi for about £29, it's really good and has about 7 or 8 different heating levels and a timer. It's worth it's weight in gold and has been a life saver this autumn/winter.

Skowvegas · 09/01/2018 19:14

I have to keep the heating on anyway, to stop the pipes freezing (am in Maine).

But I keep the house cooler in the house in the day, and run an oil-filled heater in my small office.

Despite this my gas bill was $297 for December.

DrMarthaJones · 09/01/2018 19:16

I think some people who say "just put the heating on" really don't get it. In my last house it was easy, small and well insulated, if you were cold you popped the heat on, the house warmed up quickly and when you turned it off the house stayed warm for ages. So yeah, just put in on, no problem.
But in some houses you have old inefficient boilers, run on expensive oil, and draughty cold large houses with poor insulation. It's expensive to get the place warm and ruinous to keep it warm.
So you make do with what you have, and you have the heat on when the children are home, so that they are warm.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 09/01/2018 19:18

Absolutely, I can't bare being cold at home.

Skowvegas · 09/01/2018 19:28

Yes - before we had natural gas hooked up I'd have to heat the house with oil using an old boiler. I'd spend $600 on oil some winter months. I had small children at home so I sucked it up, but it was very hard to write those cheques.

brownelephant · 09/01/2018 20:04

then do something about it

Eifla · 09/01/2018 20:06

I live alone. Yes I use the heating.
