AIBU to not turn on heating

I have trouble with spending money on myself and for looking after myself. It's cold and I'm working from home. If the kids were here I would turn on the heating but it seems wasteful for just me. However I have a few layers and a blanket and I'm cold. Do you turn on the heating just for you.

Heating on low and plenty of thermals.

Peanutbuttercheese · 09/01/2018 12:20

I do but what you need to ask yourself is why you don't feel as if you deserve comfort because that's how your post reads.

If you are on a tight budget then I can see why your doing this if not I question why you do this.

RhiannonOHara · 09/01/2018 12:21

I work at home too and don't put the heating on for myself during the day. I actively prefer wearing thermals, cosy winter knits and warm socks, and adding a blanket if necessary. I love drinking more tea in cold weather too.

I may be a weirdo, I know. Grin

WhiteCaribou · 09/01/2018 12:21

Home alone today and the heating's on at 22 degrees. Life's too short to be cold if you're lucky enough to be able to afford the heating bill. I leave it at 20 when I'm at work (old dog to keep warm) and 19 overnight.

puppyl0ve · 09/01/2018 12:21

I have an oil heater in the study for when I’m WFH. It’s cheap to run and warms the room nicely.

thecatsthecats · 09/01/2018 12:23

If it didn't take forever to heat the house up again, I would switch it off during the day, but in this cold snap, it takes too long.

I would be cosy enough with a woolly jumper and a hot water bottle though.

I air the house whatever the weather when I work from home though, so I do knock the heating off and cuddle up for a few hours then.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/01/2018 12:23

When I was little my Mother refused to put the heating on when she was home alone (SAHM). It used to come on when my Father got home from work or when the sun set. I always thought it one of those odd things women were supposed to do so I became a feminist. Now, I put the heating on when it dips beloe 16 or 17 degs C.

If my hands are cold, I put the heating on. Theres no point suffering through the day when £2 extra on the gas bill would mean you enjoy your day much more and probably get more done because youre not huddling under blankets.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/01/2018 12:24

I love drinking more tea in cold weather too

But then you have to divest layers and go into a freezing bathroom to wee more often ...

Blackteadrinker77 · 09/01/2018 12:24

I keep the thermostat at 18° all day and 16° at night.

Put it on, your worth the £ aren't you

FucksakeCuntingFuckingTwats · 09/01/2018 12:24

Yes I have the heating on so the place is as warm as it always is in winter.

confusedandemployed · 09/01/2018 12:24

I'm sat here with a hot water bottle'no way does the heating go on just for me. Again though- if the dog is shivering I'll light the fire or stick the thermostat up a notch.

I've found a hot water bottle to be great for keeping me warm, along with a cheap thermal vest from Home Bargs and fleecy slippers.

BashStreetKid · 09/01/2018 12:24

If I'm in on my own at home, I just put on a small freestanding heater in whichever room I'm in.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/01/2018 12:25

I'm working from home at this moment (well actually just stopping for a sandwich and to get dinner prepped for tonight). The Hive thermostat in the hall says 16.4 degrees. It's just about ok but I do have thick socks, warm leggings, a t shirt, long sleeved top and a fleece on.
As soon as it hits 3pm, I turn it on as I like the house warm when DH and DD get home. We also have it on for 45 mins each morning (5.30-6.15). It'll be on until the temp is 19 or 20 then will go off as that's warm enough for us.

So to answer the question, I don't have the heating on until mid afternoon and usually manage ok.

Lethaldrizzle · 09/01/2018 12:25

If you can afford it why on earth wouldn't you? Don't be a long suffering martyr. You're important too!

ItsAllABitStrangeReally · 09/01/2018 12:25

I use my hairdryer under my bedcovers to warm me up...........wouldnt occur to me to put it on with just me here.

RhiannonOHara · 09/01/2018 12:26

Spartacus, my bathroom isn't any colder than the rest of the house, I don't think. And with my thermals on it can't touch me anyway. Grin

SaucyJack · 09/01/2018 12:27

Hell, yes. Being cold makes you miserable. Life is too goddamn short to spend it having to wear a coat to go for a piss.

Also, it's not particularly any more expensive to keep the warmth ticking over by popping the heating on for an bit every hour or so- rather than letting it cook right down and having to heat it back up from scratch.

QueenThisTime · 09/01/2018 12:30

Yes, I work from home and I do the blankets and jumpers as well, but I'll have it on if I'm still cold. Can you turn down other radiators so you're just heating one room?

I also reason I don't go out much, drink much or have to pay to commute. Heating is a reasonable cost compared to those things.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/01/2018 12:31

And with my thermals on it can't touch me anyway

How do you wee with your thermals on? :)

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 09/01/2018 12:31

Oh yeah, heating on whenever I want.

thegreylady · 09/01/2018 12:31

We are elderly and have the heating on most of the day at the moment. We don’t let it go below 20 degrees in the day. The heating is off from 10pm to 7am from mid September/October and usually off when it feels warm enough. Normally it is off from 10am to 5 pm but not in Jan/Feb. I click it on once I start to feel chilly. I’m just thinking about putting it it on now (19 degrees)!

SpeckleDust · 09/01/2018 12:31

I hate being cold at home which is one of the main reasons I decided to work in an office for 3 days a week.

On the days I am at home alone during the day, I tend to have the thermostat set to 14C. I was freezing yesterday despite being on my feet doing stuff so I turned the thermostat up to 19C but took ages to get warm again (draughty old house, tall ceilings).

I would totally recommend getting a small electric heater to keep next to you in the room where you are working. Our gas boiler broke in December when we had a really cold spell and ended up using 3 of them to keep the bedrooms warm overnight for about 4 days. I was expecting our electricity usage to rocket for those days but there was barely any difference at all.

I bought one of these heaters from Screwfix at the time and was surprised how warm it kept the room. I worked out it would cost a maximum of 22p per hour to use on its maximum setting but I'm sure it was a lot less than that when we used it.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 09/01/2018 12:32

I work from my Garden Office, so it's a smaller space to heat than the whole house. I absolutely do have the heating on. Nothing worse than being cold while you work.

Why do you thinks it's wrong to be warm and comfortable?
