AIBU to not turn on heating

I have trouble with spending money on myself and for looking after myself. It's cold and I'm working from home. If the kids were here I would turn on the heating but it seems wasteful for just me. However I have a few layers and a blanket and I'm cold. Do you turn on the heating just for you.

Yes. Being cold is miserable

TheViceOfReason · 09/01/2018 12:34

At the end of the day the question is - can you afford to run the heating?

If no, then add more layers, have a cup of tea, use a hot water bottle.

If yes, then don't be daft and put the heating on. Its ridiculous to sit cold, in a cold house just because you don't think you should put heating on.

RB68 · 09/01/2018 12:35

Hottie is the answer - I usually put it at my feet. Also work somewhere you can close the door and keep the heat in. If you regularly work from home and its cold get an oil radiator to pop on in just the room you are in occasionally

Viviennemary · 09/01/2018 12:38

Find something else to cut back on. If you catch a chill you won't be any use to anyone. I refuse to be cold.

Meowstro · 09/01/2018 12:42

If I've layered up and put blankets on, know I've eaten and it's not hunger, then on the heating will go!

mirime · 09/01/2018 12:43

@SaucyJack

Also, it's not particularly any more expensive to keep the warmth ticking over by popping the heating on for an bit every hour or so- rather than letting it cook right down and having to heat it back up from scratch.

Depends on your boiler. Ours doesn't turn off when the house reaches the required temperature, it just turns the pump off apparently - very old boiler.

And no, I don't turn the heating on in the day if I'm home on my own. The electric shower costs a huge amount, I'm not running up more expense on the gas bill unnecessarily. I really miss having a combi. I also really miss hot water in the summer as I very rarely put the immersion heater on.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/01/2018 12:45

I usually put it at my feet

Really? I have these amazing Eastern Europen knitted sock things so my hottie gets shoved up my jumper between my thermal and my long sleeved T (with my 100% wool jumper on the outside). I like to feel it slosh when I walk. Note - loose jumpers are important here.

Ginandanything · 09/01/2018 12:46

No. It's too expensive. I work from home and I didn't put the heating on even when there was ice in the buckets. I have a woodburner that goes on for a few hours in the evening, but that's it.

Healthier to be cold. People with overheated houses are strange. Put a jumper on. Put another jumper on. Sit on a hot water bottle. Stop moaning.

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/01/2018 12:47

My heating has been on since August. I refuse to be cold. I hate the weather I hate living in a country that goes dark at 3pm. I pay the bills.

I don't care what it costs if you live here heating is a necessity not a luxury.

When I am cold I sit nursing cups of coffee and nothing gets done so it is beneficial for me to be warm

holycityzoo · 09/01/2018 12:47

God yes, I can't stand being cold.

fairylightsdown · 09/01/2018 12:49

Yes; and I have it on timer for the cats 😳

lynzpynz · 09/01/2018 12:49

I work from home a lot too, I usually don’t put heating on but have a little portable heater I use on and off just to heat up my home office room so does the job without having to heat the whole house!

betgilroy · 09/01/2018 12:49

yes, I'm sat working from home and heating has been on since 9.30am.
It;s bloody freezing today

BlueSapp · 09/01/2018 12:49

of course you out on the heating, whne there are less people on the house it will always be colder anyway so you should have it on and when others come home turn it down a bit to maintain the constant temperature.

Bluelady · 09/01/2018 12:49

Draughty very old house so the heating goes on at 6am and off at 10pm. There's nothing worse than being cold.

Cath2907 · 09/01/2018 12:51

Yes - I work from home full time and often it is just me. I do tend to heat only my office rather than the whole house but I can't work well when I am cold. I have a gas fire in the office I put on. At this time of year we keep the heating on all day - if we allow it to go cold during the day it doesn't warm up in the afternoon / evening when DD is home from school (it is never on overnight - comes on at 6am and goes off at 7pm).

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/01/2018 12:52

Yes you are if you’re feeling cold. You don’t have heat the whole house, turn the radiators off in the rooms you’re not using. This is generally cheaper than a portable heater as electricity is more expensive.

Llangollen · 09/01/2018 12:52

Yes

When it's cold, I leave the heating on 24h a day anyway. It works out cheaper than keeping it low, and keep the rooms warm, than letting them freeze at night and blasting it in the morning to warm the place up, by which time we all leave the house

In this country, I have more issues with damp and mould than actual temperature, so I have the heating on in the entire house.

reluctantbrit · 09/01/2018 12:52

It depends in our house. DH works from home each day but sits in a tiny room in the loft extension, the only part of the house which is decently insulated. The heating is then off during the day.

When I am home heating is on as downstairs is far too cold. I can't understand people wearing layers upon layers, far too restrictive, I need clothes as thin as possible or a I got mad. I normally run around in a long sleeve T-shirt unless I have to go out.

LynseyLeigh · 09/01/2018 12:53

Yes i would put it on in January . I would get sick if i am too cold.

RhiannonOHara · 09/01/2018 12:54

Spartacus, I don't wear a thermal onesie Grin
I tend to just wear a thermal top. Leggings sometimes if it's extra cold, but TBH most of the time I'd rather wrap a lovely alpaca blanket round myself.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/01/2018 12:54

I'm working from home and our heating is on 18, I don't like it hot, prefer to layer up. I couldn't sit here with it on 21/22. I turn it right down to about 10 at night.

I hate going into the office as it's like a furnace, red hot radiators and sealed windows and everyone wearing t shirts. Crazy. Really aggravates my dry skin.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 09/01/2018 12:54

We have the thermostat set to come on if it gets cold if we are here or not, it doesn't cost much more as the boiler is maintaining a constant temperature rather than heating up from cold everyone you switch it on. It also keeps the fabric of the house warmer and reduces damp and draughts

LittleTinyPig · 09/01/2018 12:55

I wouldn't heat the whole house just for me, but I would heat the room I am in. That's why we have heaters in the office and in the front room, as those are the rooms I am most likely to be in by myself.

OuchLegoHurts · 09/01/2018 12:57

Just wondering, why are any of you less important than the people who you WOULD turn it on for?

If I'm cold/hungry/thirsty I put heating on/eat/drink.
