AIBU to be think dogs (and cats) are uncannily perceptive to the point of spookiness. One dog I had used to press himself against my legs whenever I had a few stairs to climb. I used to get ratty and tell him off, until I realised he thought he was helping (I have walking difficulties). Another dog would sit squarely in front of any family member who was ill at the time, whenever someone knocked on the door. Just uncanny and brilliant, love 'em!

I have a stupid dog who eats my shoes phones and the kids teddies however he is so intuitive. Last year I had some bad news and was upset and he sat with me head on my chest looking at me and providing much needed comfort and love❤️

He is also kind when the kids are upset he licks their tears and let my DD use his ears as a tissue 🐾🐾

My parents dog started acting really oddly, going missing and being found hiding under a bush in the garden, and stopped going near my Dad, the Dog was 12 at the time so my parents assumed he was developing dementia. My Dad was subsequently diagnosed with a Brain Tumour. After Dads surgery the dog was a little unsure of him (probably due to massive change in mobility after surgery) but soon got used to it all and we have some lovely photo's of the dog lying with my Dad on his hospital bed (neuro rehab ward allowed dogs).

About 10months or so after my Dad was diagnosed the Dog started behaving oddly again, my Mum rang my brother in an awful state because she new it meant it was nearly over, Dad died a few weeks later.

6 Months later, the Dog still looks for my Dad :-(

DDog has developed a pathological hatred of mopeds. Other two wheelers are fine (e.g. bikes) but he hates mopeds.

We have a massive problem with moped enabled muggings locally and I think he has picked up on it (e.g. slight rise in tension in me?) and wants to protect me.

And despite being a young terrierist he obliges and makes a very elderly dog lover happy by falling asleep in her arms from time to time :)

I had a terrible, frightening situation happen to me last month. It's really shaken me to the point I'm having panic attacks. My lovely dog now barely leaves my side, it's like she's always checking I'm ok and will give my hand a little lick every so often, if I go to the bathroom she sits outside whining. She just knows how emotionally awful I'm feeling at the moment and is a great comfort

AuntLydia · 08/01/2018 21:20

I don't like dogs and would have thought all these stories were bonkers BUT a year or so ago I was out running and a small dog came running out at me snarling and growling like he was going to go for me. I stopped dead, shitting myself, when a 2nd larger dog came racing out of the same property. I thought I was really in trouble but, no, the larger dog got between me and the psycho pup and basically herded it away and back home.

I have often wondered if it was saving me or saving its psychotic wee pal from getting into trouble?

Fedupithink · 08/01/2018 21:21

My dog knew I was pregnant before I did. He started to sniff my belly and climb on my lap for a sleep which he hadn't done for a really long time about a week after conception would have been.

That boy curled up with me every single day with his paw across my growing bump or his head tucked underneath it in my lap. Now she's here, he knows when she's going to fall asleep - he gets up and lays by her empty cot until She drops off and I put her in and he stays there until she wakes up.

If she cries, he's the first to stir. The bond they have is unbreakable.

tenbob · 08/01/2018 21:26

My nephew came to stay with us a couple of years ago when he was about 6

He was larking around on the stairs and fell down the last few, when DDog happened to be in the hallway and she was straight over to him to see if he was ok
He had a bit of a cry but was fine 10 mins later.

It's now 2 years later, but every time he visits, DDog watches him if he goes upstairs, and waits at the bottom of the stairs until he comes back down, and then gives me lots of happy tail wags to say well done for making it down safely

She doesn't do it with anyone else, and he only visits a couple of times a year, yet she always knows him and stairs need supervision

SaucyJack · 08/01/2018 21:30

My ex's cat was the same fedup. That bloody animal openly loathed me for years, until I was expecting DD1- and she took to sleeping curled up with my bump.

Kiki275 · 08/01/2018 21:34

@Eryri1981 You should have issued a tissue alert! What a beautiful story x

AuntLydia · 08/01/2018 21:36

This thread is in serious danger of making me like dogs...

Mulberry72 · 08/01/2018 21:37

We don’t have dogs (but we do like them!), we have 4 cats ranging from 15 years old to 3 years old. The youngest, Rosie is like my shadow, she follows me everywhere.

When I’m poorly (chronic illness) she’ll come and get on the sofa with me and put her head on my shoulder and put her paw on the other shoulder as if she’s hugging me, if anyone comes near me she’ll bat them away or miaow until they move!

She’s a real Mummy’s girl Smile

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 21:40

DD's paternal grandfather was an avid walker, used to walk his three dogs round the woods for hours. All three dogs young, fit & healthy but suddenly the Rottie started resting regularly on walks, for ten/fifteen minutes at a time. No other change in behaviour. They took him to the vet, clean bill of health...the vet recommended DD grandad go see a GP. Turns out he had a heart condition & ended up needing major surgery. Rottie dog saved his life ❤️

My folks' have two spaniels, one of whom 'protects' them from the ghosties in the house. The other just stares intently at the spot her brother is barking at 😂

joangray38 · 08/01/2018 21:42

My old cat started acting really oddly around my godfather when he cane around - howling and wanting cuddles off him, climbing all over him. A few weeks later gf was diagnosed with alchzimers . A nurse who visited gf said my cat's behaviour wasn't unusual - they can sense changes before we see them.
When gf sadly died his wife came to visit and the cat looked behind her and cried as though he knew gf had gone.
New cat has realised I cannot bend down , hear the door bell or move fast . He climbs on the table for food/ cuddles and tells me when someone is at the door then runs back and miaows very loudly as though he is telling them that I am slowly getting there - even Hermes know to listen for him and wait as he doesn't do it if I am out!

RickOShay · 08/01/2018 21:51

My dog always comforts me when I am upset. If I am poorly he lies next to my bed, and won’t go for a walk with anybody else. I love my dog so much, he is one of the best things about my life.

addler · 08/01/2018 21:51

Oh what a lovely thread! What lovely animals you all have.

ZivaDiva · 08/01/2018 21:53

When I got a phone at 2am to tell me my Dad had died I was alone as DH was away camping with DCs. My dog climbed on my lap ( she never did this normally) and stayed there for the rest of the night while I wept onto her floppy ears. The best kind of unconditional comfort. I told her everything about how much I loved my dad and she gave me the odd lick and was just there.

addler · 08/01/2018 21:53

I've just remembered one, the first dog we had as a child was a golden lab retriever x, and she would place herself between my brother and whatever window was closest to him, no matter what room he was in. When he went down for a nap she would lie outside his bedroom door and not move until he woke up, and if somebody tried to go in before he was awake she wouldn't let them. She was a lovely dog.

tenbob · 08/01/2018 22:03

DDog definitely knows I'm pregnant. She creeps into our bedroom (against DH's rules Grin) and gets into my side of the bed for a spoon cuddle, and when I'm on the sofa, she rests her head on my bump

And when I had a miscarriage a couple of years ago, she just climbed up onto my lap and let me sob into her fur. She didn't need to be asked to cuddle me. She just knew I needed her

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 08/01/2018 22:05

My cats were due to go to the vet for their vaccinations. I did nothing to tip them off about this - breakfast as usual, let them out as usual, assuming they would come back in when the kids left for school (as usual). Kids left; no cats. Eight thirty. No cats. Nine o'clock; nine fifteen; nine thirty; no cats.

At 9.50 I had to give in and make the Call Of Shame to the vet and day, "I'm sorry, my cats have disappeared and can't come for their vaccinations today." The receptionist said, "oh, don't worry, we get this a lot. They must all check the appointment book or something. I'll reschedule you for tomorrow. As soon as you put the phone down, they'll come back in."

And I put the phone down, and lo and behold, both little cats come back in through the cat flap and settled down for a nap. I have no idea how they knew. But they bloody knew.

On the plus side, they always know when one of us is sad, and hang around in a comforting manner and give extra cuddles.

Crashbangwhatausername · 08/01/2018 22:11

My dog bit me a couple of hours before my waters broke. He doesn't like children, I think he knew. Never bitten anyone since

JediStoleMyBike · 08/01/2018 22:18

My DH and I rescued a dog with (we discovered after the fact) serious behavioural problems that we were not advised of at the point of getting him. He was fear agressive, possessed over food and resources and was generally very difficult but we worked with him and involved behaviouralists and did our very best. He was aloof but adored us, and we loved him.

After I suffered a miscarriage and arrived home from the hospital he hopped up on the sofa next to me and put his head on my lap, not moving until I did to use the bathroom. He followed me, sat outside the door and then followed me back to the sofa to put his head on my knee again. He was not a cuddly dog at all and it was as though he knew I just needed that level of comfort.

We lost him in December 2016 to an undiagnosed heart defect and it broke our hearts.

Bitsandbobsalot · 08/01/2018 22:20

My 3 pekingese (1 sadly now past) sat by my side for days and days while I was having a mc they only moved to follow me to the bathroom. They refused to leave my side of the bed to even eat and my dh had to carry them out one at a time to go do there business outside. They waited for me to come back from appointments.
Looking back it started a day or so before I began bleeding. Did they know ? I’m not sure but I did take great comfort that they sat keeping watch over me. I’ll love them forever

Lizzie48 · 08/01/2018 22:47

I like dogs though I wouldn't want one as a pet (I have 4 cats), but we support Guide Dogs for the Blind, there's no doubt that there can be amazing bond between dogs and people.

Huntinginthedark · 08/01/2018 22:49

Haven't they used dogs to sniff out cancer, something to do with alkaline
I thought it was pretty amazing

Animals can definitely tell when you need them in someway.
Lovely stories

Nikx85 · 08/01/2018 23:16

My dog is just a major dick. Supposed to be my dog, i wanted him i bought him i walk him and i feed him. He how ever has chosen to be loyal to dh.
Dh works nights and the dick dog will spend the night ignoring me, i mean totally blanking me. He hears dhs key in the door and flies up and lays in my lap pretending to be asleep. He peeks through one eye waiting for dh to pay him attention. As spon as dh says hi to him he jumps up and gives me a look of "fuck you".

The cat how ever knows just how to get the dick dog into trouble...i give her extra dreamies for this 🤣
