Isn't it about time we ditched this New Year/new me/diet rubbish

I get sick of it every January and in 2018 the whole thing just seems really stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for healthy eating/exercise/wanting to make positive changes to our lives. But all the advertising on tv about getting fit this new year followed by weigh watchers adverts in January and shops going mad on "healthy" ready meals and diet foods in your face is getting on my nerves.

Then when the fad of New Year wears off everyone goes back to normal. In 2018 this just seems really silly!

If people are really wanting to do changes in their lives with diets/exercise and good habits, why buy into the advertising of New Year/New You which is designed to fail after a weeks. Especially in cold, dreary January where you're most likely to feel unmotivated.

When I needed to lose weight I started in spring when it was getting warmer, lighter and I was more likely to feel happier and motivated.

Bit of a rant yes but I'm just so sick of the same old January bullshit of fad diets, failed resolutions and shops being full of the same old health fads every year!

Yep. Capitalism and marketing. Need to keep us spending after the festive period.
Bollocks to it.

MavisPike · 08/01/2018 17:02

I agree with you
sick to death of seeing adverts about losing weight

HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 17:04

Its getting ridiculous. I saw the first tv advert on Boxing Day.

MabelFurball · 08/01/2018 17:04

Yes - all this new year, new you cobblers bores me to death. Makes me feel like doing the opposite. Binge January anyone? Grin

Whiterabbitears · 08/01/2018 17:07

I agree January is the worst time to start a diet, its cold dark and you want comfort food. I also get sick of all the programmes on TV about diets, boring!

Pinkhoodie · 08/01/2018 17:07

Totally agree it's boring.

I've still got all of my Christmas chocolates to finish off anyway.

FuckOffDailyMailFools · 08/01/2018 17:08

Hmmmm don’t know. A lot of it is definitely a ploy to get us to keep spending imo. I’m sure some do make positive changes though...

I know someone who does dry January every year, but he’s not doing it this year after he realised he always went mad and drank too much every February! Better just to reduce overall.

honeyroar · 08/01/2018 17:10

I find it easier to start in winter- by summer we're out and about more and it's harder. I find it easier in cold weather - home made healthy soups and stews fill me much more than salad.

Each to their own. If it doesn't suit you don't do it.

HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 17:11

Not just capitalist but sexist as well. The adverts are aimed at women more than 99% of the time.

HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 17:12

honeyroar yes it is easier in winter in the way youve described.

glenthebattleostrich · 08/01/2018 17:14

The people who come up with this are the same gits who think dry January is a good idea. You know, the ones who sit around the table wondering how to make the most miserable month of the year that little bit worse by taking away our wine and crisps.

Motherplucker · 08/01/2018 17:15

No...it's the only way I can jolly myself up to do anything,as sad as that is ,I plan from November what I will do differently each year..3 years a go I became vegan on 1 January..I'm still vegan...2 years ago I stopped vomiting my food on 1 January, and I've stuck to it.this year ,I'm eating normally, and I'm sticking to it..plus I've joined a gym,and I'm going....no I need the whole ,new year new start, or I would never do anything

HerBigChance · 08/01/2018 17:19

I find it quite useful to have a natural point at which to review things. You don't have to get into the spending aspect of it, or make grand statments to yourself, just make small steps to improvements in a number of areas.

catwoozle · 08/01/2018 17:21

I've been doing 5:2 for ages and just went back to it after Christmas. I was ready to after a week off and eating more than usual.

DenPerry · 08/01/2018 17:22

This Grin

Isn't it about time we ditched this New Year/new me/diet rubbish
goingonabearhunt1 · 08/01/2018 17:23

I agree bigchance, don't disagree with the principle, just all the adverising etc. and people going on about it gets a bit annoying (same with Christmas really!)

catwoozle · 08/01/2018 17:23

February is a much better month to cut out booze though. There are signs of spring and it's shorter.

expatinscotland · 08/01/2018 17:23

I agree. It's fucking tedious in the extreme.

AngelsSins · 08/01/2018 17:35

I agree, its negative most of the time and fairly sexist. My resolutions this year are to:

  1. Get a cleaner
  2. Stop reading the DM! The app is one of the best to use news apps I've found but it gives me rage reading it (and especially the comments) every morning.
HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 17:49

cat i started at slimming world on 6 February 2002 and went on to lose ten stone.

Feel a bit crap at the mo though due to Christmas weight gain. Im over 40 and it now goes straight to my middle. Weight will be coming off but these ads dont help They are hoping to make women feel insecure and crap This is the month that the diet industry make a lot of money.

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 08/01/2018 17:51

I saw Ric Flair post on Twitter:

New year. Same me. Woooooooooooooooo!

Much better Grin

AintNoOtherFan · 08/01/2018 18:06

I can't see how anyone could find the enthusiasm to diet or start exercising in a month which is cold, wet or icey, dark and dreary. All I want to do is laze around under duvet after work and eat chocolate/crisps with hot chocolate. As for choosing a long dark month to give up booze in is really bizarre!

When I lost weight I found my motivation at the end of March as it was getting warmer and lighter and the smell of spring in the air releases a feel good factor. I naturally want to drink more water when the weather is nicer and I eat lighter food and less sweets/crisps. Plus if you wanted to start a gym I imagine going when it's light and mild outside is far more appealing then when it's freezing cold and dark!

CheeseGirl4 · 08/01/2018 18:14

Much as I dislike the diet industry, I think the marketing campaigns reflect people's views on the January diet rather than vice versa. I am always tired, slumpy and fat after the excesses of Christmas so do want to make some positive changes. If I carried on eating in that way until spring I'd be bloody enormous.

YouTheCat · 08/01/2018 18:16

Yoga was packed yesterday. Usually there are about 10 of us.

I don't do diets and am eating takeaway pizza.

HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 18:17

YY Cheese And its bloody uncomfortable when weight just goes to the middle. When i was younger the first place it went to was my boobs. Not any more.
